kaNmunnE's starting piano piece resembles the piece coming in Richard Marx's 'Right Here Waiting'.

Thanks. But I am unable to find them online.
'vayathu vA vA' is the pick of the album. Instant winner! In 'theenda theenda', the flow of veena piece is very spontaneous and sounds IRish.

Udhaya,
Nice review.
* 'Theenda Theenda' is good. However the lyrics do not seem to 'fit' in the tune and stand out like a sore thumb. (like T. Rajendar's old numbers)
Reeti GowLai is fast becoming the favorite raga of composers. The tune is different and if one can forgive Bombay Jayashree's Tamil (not so bad as some of her contemporaries) and her atrocious 'la la la' in the pallavi, the song is one of the best efforts by the MD.
* 'Neruppu Koothadikkudu kAthum Koothadikkudu'
A good 'dabbAnguthu song'!
Chitra Sivaraman's voice is distinct and very likeable. Though she sang earlier in 'TenAli', this song gives her scope to perform. You are right! Venkat Prabhu (Gangai Amaran's son?) disappoints. I am certainly reminded of 'ThiruppAchi AruALa' though the tunes are not similar. Probably because of the beat and the use of the phrase, "vAdA vAdA".
* My pick of the album however is 'Vayadu VA vA engirathu'. A Very melodious tune set primarily in 'Hamsa nadham', sung excellently by Hariharan and HariNi. Team work'ku oru Jay!! (lyrics, tune, orchestration and singing are all good). But I can't help but wish this song was sung by SPB and Chitra!!! They would have elevated the song to a new level. Hariharan, HariNi "eppavumE nunippul mEyarAngappA"! My wishlist notwithstanding, I rate it : 9/10
Overall, I feel that YSR is displaying some maturity in his compositions. However he has a long way to go. I wonder if he spends time listening to the classics of his illustrious father.
I wish in future he uses good solid singers rather than rank new comers- those who neither have a sound musical knowledge nor have the voice and diction to carry off the songs. This tradition if reversed by young MDs like YSR and Harris Jayaraj will definitely herald a welcome change in TFM.

an addition to the above posting:
The prelude to 'KaN MunnE' was excellent, and raised my expectations. I thought it would be some nice ballad ( like 'Oh VeNNilA' from 'kAdhal Desam'). Alas, the tune along with its pace was completely different (fast) and though the interlude music pieces were great, the song IMO is a wasted opportunity. Director's pressure perhaps (the theme is youth, you know!)
If you make anyone listen to this song, he/she would most probably swear that it is composed by ARR!

Pretty unimaginative album, most interludes and orchestration dont have a flow....a lot of immaturity in composition...more like a college kid composing...dunno how mnay ppl like it.
But I'd be a moron if I start thinking for others, I'm just expressing my opinion...Maybe I need to listen it with a different perspective. Sorry if I offended anyone...
Doesnt the song theenda theenda sound like Tik tik tik's 'poo malarnthida nadamidum ponmayile'? Is that in reethigowlai too?

Theenda Theenda is based on abogi and sriranjani,
the orchestration inbetween resembles 'Rithi Gowali' but the whole song is not on Rithi Gowali but on SriRanjani/Abhogi combo.
Observer a Lady ? Good Good!!
But you have to listen to all kinds of music lady
I strongly recommend you to start with Alan Parson,L Shankar,Peter Gabriel and Shakti and you can listen to Enigma,Deep Purple - they have used all kinds of thalam like kandai, thisram and all in their rock songs quite interesting

Karthik,
I have the same opinion as yours. I think , its more of a fashion to score such a music. Music is changing so fast, that its going a little unacceptable.

Thulluvatho ilamai - Some immature music for clearsil audience.
Heights is YSR singing himself. Worst was his private album blast, where he sang all songs were sung by him.

Looks like there has been quite an amount of interest in this album going by the number of posts and reviews. I will not attempt a review here but give my impressions.(UV, I am not an expert, just a listener, who thinks he is discerning :)). While Karthik Raja went more groovy YSR seems to be going in the opposite direction. Examples are the interludes (vayadhu va) and different percussion accompaniment for charanams (theenda), like IR. Looks like he is not afraid to 'step outside the groove' and carry the song just on the mood/rhythm than the sound alone. Also, interesting is a dappAnguththu song in the album. Is YSR trying to prove that he is a versatile, mainstream MD ? I think he has been successful but it is not an unqualified one. There are some rough edges (as Neels points out about theenda song). YSR is also wont to sing/make others sing in accented tamil, which I do not like. There are some pieces which clearly remind me of ARR (like in kARRukku K). YSR should strictly avoid these. But surely there are lots of IR influence in this album than in his previous albums. Anyways, each and every album of YSR is different and seems to be progressing in the right direction. I can sense his confidence and determination in his efforts.Mention should be made of the recording quality which is really excellent with some nice acoustic recording pieces(especially drums).
(How old is YSR BTW ?)

What happened?
At the start of this thread I found many praising TI and now I see some severe critical reviews of TI. Yaar.. after seeing the earlier reviews I recommended TI to my brother. I have not yet heard TI. I would rather see it in TV first and then make my mind to buy one cassette. Rs. 40 is a big money for me.

Well guys...what can I say apart from I was thoroughly impressed by the variety on this album. As far as I can say, although everyone is keen to point out that Yuvan is not as good as ARR, it is nice to see that he is at least up to comaprison level with him. I loved this album and okay maye he shouldn't have sung Ithu Kathala, but even still the orchestration of the piece is great. Kanmunne shows that his music is truly fitting to the movie. Well done Yuvan.
Yuvan is just 21 and has achieved a great lot.

YSR has come out with something excellent Job. The album is fulfilling. Songs make you to ask "once more". If it has not touched first time, hear second time, then third, fourth etc...Then you reach a stage where you can't live without. You eventually find that you have become a slave for this album. I agree Rs. 40 is big. If you miss the first hit, then you may loose the essence of it once for all. What's the point in hearing this album next year? Now KR and YSR look like "big" brothers.

let them say whatever they want..they can't take yuvan's sucess..but there is a better way to show it than saying bad things about an album which is in no 1 position all over the world..i mean in tamil language..thulluvatho ilamai has been appreciated by lot of people and here come couple of jerks who think they can change the sales by spitting bad words..ha..ha..ha..this is fun..and i pity them...let them compose some thing first.then come and review about ragas..if you listen to an album listen as a music lover..or common audience..mm...this world is full of jealous people.

Ganesh,
Worst was his private album blast, where he sang all songs were sung by him I am sure you have not listened to Blast album. Some songs were sung by Unni, Nitya Sree etc., Eduthom Udaithom endru pesakkoodaathu Nanbare.

Well the album is a decent work by YSR...
however,
1. Isn't the "Idhu kadhala" song starts like "Hotel california" song?....
2. Similarly, "Kann Munney" sounds like a "Richard Marx" song...

How come you are so sure? Dont jump to nonsense conclusions as u do usually.
Blast was hopeless with yuvans screeching voice in most songs and I had the misfortune of buying it. Unni and NityaSree sang one so called classical number. BTW, there was kamal hassans voice and nagoor hanifas voice in another song, but it was PREDOMINANTLY yuvan.
