Lajja's music will stand out minimally and only to a certain extent, it is a product that shows effort and sincerity, but its stand out comes from Ilyaraja and Prashoon who compose and pen Lata Mangeshkar's "Kaun Dagar." Lata sings effortlessly yet still sounds as good as she did ages ago. Perhaps mandatory when singing for a Raj Kumar Santoshi films, Kaun Dagar is along the lines of what Rahman created in Ek Tuhi Bharosa from Pukar. She sounds similar both tracks. The lyrics and composition distinguish the song from the soundtrack and for the most part set a mood to the film.

Nayak
'Nayak' is slated for an early release and the fans are just waiting to compare the tunes in it with those in 'Lagaan'. When A.R. Rahman descended on the Hindi film music scene he cut for himself a path not traversed before.
The decline in the quality of film music at that time paved the way for Rahman’s success. That is not to belittle his creative ability as a composer, but it is a fact that innovations in film music have never been accepted with such fervour earlier or even after, for that matter. That is why Rahman himself has mostly kept to the beaten track after his initial success.
The music of 'Nayak' is different and has a certain freshness and strength which deserves to be welcomed. 'Chalo Chale Mitwa' is a beautiful number that transports you to the hills and valleys of the countryside. Its rustic charm pleasantly soothes your nerves. Equally enjoyable is the alternative version of the same song. Sunidhi Chauhan and Hans Raaj Hans sing the very enjoyable 'Saiyyan'. 'Chidiya Tu Hoti To' carries the more familiar Rahman style with good lyrics adding to its appeal.
The duet 'Tu Achcha Lagta Hai' has the flavour of the countryside and excellent singing by Hariharan and Kavita Subramaniam coupled with innovative orchestration make it easy listening. The Shankar Mahadevan-Alka Yagnik duet 'Rukhi Suki Roti' is interesting too with lively music and humorous lyrics. 'Shakalaka Baby' is a cool dance number by light-eyed beauty Vasundhara Das, Shiraz Uppa and Pravin Mani.
Buy this album because innovations even in small doses deserve encouragement.

Lajja
To compare composer Anu Malik’s music in 'Lajja' with his earlier work would not be correct for two reasons a) even among his hit films the degree of success varies, some being more successful than others, and, b) in 'Lajja' he has tried some innovations that are bold and commendable but what degree of popularity it achieves remains to be seen.
Excellent singing by Anuradha Shriram and apt orchestration make 'Aa Hi Jaiye' an enjoyable fare. 'Saajan Ke Ghar Jaana Hai' is a nice shaadi type of track wisely been repeated later in the album. The music for 'Kalyug Ki Seeta' beautifully reflects the melancholy mood of the song and Anu Malik deserves all credit for accurate interpretation. Both versions of the song (one by Anuradha Paudwal and the other by Shubha Mudgal) are good, being rendered by two stalwarts of Indian film playback. Although 'Badi Mushkil' sounds somewhat familiar the track really sounds good. The comparison between ice cream and life is well handled in the song 'Jiyo Jiyo' with KK doing full justice to the theme with his usual gusto. But a really interesting song is 'Kaun Dagar' composed by Illayaraja and sung by none other than Lata Mangeshkar.
Overall Lajja is a score in keeping with the best offbeat film soundtracks and will grace the collection of the serious listener.

Rounding up the album is the Lata Mangeshkar sung, Kaun Dagar, with music composed by Dr Ilaiyaraaja and lyrics written by Prason Joshi.
Of course, the nightingale's voice is magical and you wonder why this track was pushed to the end of the album. The words are deep and philosophical, but it's the tune that takes you away. Not one of Mangeshkar's best works, but passable nonetheless.

Hmmm...I think soon there will be a monopoly-watch imposed on music-machine, Anu Malik.
Album Title : Lajja
Music Director : Anu Malik
Lyricist : Sameer
Music Company : Universal:Rs.55
The maestro Ilaiyaraaja steps in with Lata Mangeshkar on ‘Kaun Dagar’. The song has a haunting and lasting impact on you, as I’m sure was intended. Like ‘Kalyug Ki Sita’, it is one of the poignant tracks on the album.

Lajja's Raja!
http://music.indya.com/news/news_ind.html
This Friday, after three weeks of no releases, Rajkumar Santoshi's real-life-inspired saga on the trauma of a rape victim, and women in general, Lajja, releases. Anu Malik's music is doing just about OK, and is expected to pick up with the release of the film, which is carrying excellent reports. But those who have watched the film at the previews can't stop raving about the quality of Ilayaraja's background score.
Yes, the veteran composer from the South has been roped in by Santoshi, and the effect is to be seen to be believed. Apparently, each key scene in Lajja in enhanced thanks to the music, and the important sequences involving Manisha Koirala and Madhuri Dixit leave a telling impact. With someone as legendary as Dr Ilayaraja, we didn't expect anything less anyway!

"...The music of the film is just about okay. The hammering of items songs like Badi mushkil and Saajan ke ghar jaana hai register but the background score and background songs get lost in the narration..."

The above postings and few other i saw on the web about Lajja proves one things northies are not so craze or care for BGM its only southies esp tamil/telegu who give much importance to BGM
so hard luck IR. Your only chance of making it big in North has again bite the dust.
so back to documentaries as usual i guess

I have found over 3 Lajja film reviews at major sites including the weirdos rediff.com and not one ever mentioned anything at all about the bgm. but do u think the 3 hours of the movie was all f--kin dialogues? or, was it the day of earmuffed film reviewers at the movies? too cold inside the theaters maybe. but, the movie is a hot one...

UV,
you should actually feel pity for the north indians for having known about raja's music.
raja need not and does not require the patronage of hindi films.
he has achieved enough in 20 years . leth other MDs try to achiev 1/5th of what he has done.

As usual..AM is full of contradictions :
"I am beyond the numbers game..."
"...I have it on record that Yaadein has outsold Taal. ...."
"...For the first time, an entirely different sound has been experimented with for a Hindi film. Aks is a film I am very, very proud of...."
"....I admit Rehman is talented and has given a new meaning to Hindi film music...."
"...I am very original. I am a natural. I am an ordinary man with extraordinary talent...."
"...Destiny and god's blessings. I believe in hard work and keep doing my job, come what may...."

UV, why do you think IR is trying to make it big in North ? He is just having fun composing for the Budapest Orchestra. Shouldn't people creating music also enjoy their work Or is it just created for the audiences to be titillated about and throw their money on the CD !!! Also, why this sarcasm about documentaries ? do you think people should stop doing good work if it does not reward financially or popularity ? (Think about all those researchers in the Universities, they get paid less than some programmers who have just learnt to write a for loop yesterday).
I can tell IR just enjoys his work. Listen to kutti songs on raajangahm.com chinna mahArAni is sung so well and even differently with a lilt by the maestro. Today, IR may not be 'cool'. But that does not mean we have to be so sarcastic about him. We should respect a person for his skills/contribution not for this current earning potential. (Believe me, we could also be in a situation like this one day. and I think I am going to be in one :))

UV ,
Stick to ARR's threads. That's about the level of music you can ever comprehend. You wouldn't make meaningless and insensitive comments about IR's music, if you could ever feel the heart warming melody in his songs.
