No, this is not to do with TFM but since its an allegation on ARR, thought this group might be interested!
Found in another DF that the song in Lagaan 'chale chalo', which goes 'baar baar hum...' sounds eaxctly like a old Telugu song composed by KV Mahadevan which goes 'chinuku chinuku gaa gunde vechaga' from the movie 'Mukkupadaka'.
Can any Telugu music expert comment?

Karthik, Carmina Burana is always cited as a good example of non-secular vocal work in WCM. Most others, as you are aware are of religious in nature.

kiru: there are some propagandist works commissioned by the russians which are also good examples of non-secular (i.e., if you don't consider communism to be a religion :-) ) choral works. even shastakovich has composed some! how about m.b.sreenivos's cErndhisai?

kiru, but for the composers of baroque period and to a great extent js bach , the religious untertones were minimal in later day composers. more notably, songs by schubert and beethoven which werent strictly "religious" are also terrific vocal compositions . i think if operas could be considered as predominantly vocal works ..then the religious flavour is quite understated in them too..!

Hi,
well! some really surprising things can happen! ur back ground information on carminaburana was great! I was going through one of MJ's books in some public library and this information was available there also but i didnt pay much attention. Thanks to u now I know more abt it.
see there are a lot of historical artifacts and stuff which look seemingly important to a country but are cooly sold out in an auction. The "elephant man's bones" , historical fossils discovered with great difficulty, are wonderful examples. it becomes popular because MJ buys them and needless to say controversy ensues soon.
also needless to say MJ specializes in owning "odd" collections.
As I said in my posting I clearly read in the book that now for a composer to use stuff from carminaburana one needs to get MJ's permission for use. although the original owners still have some legal hold over it.
ur description although obviously casts doubts over the entire "MJ-buying-episode" and makes me believe that its just another rumor abt MJ started by the media, on the other hand such auctions and deals can have so many interpretations and clauses and in short it can get too complicated for us to give a definitive statement abt it.
fact remains he used this song as a promo to his HIstory album and his World tour. and in MTV the song appeared as karminaburana by Michael Jackson
well!...
sorry for the digression from the topic..... i'll try and keep it straight
bye

i have now found the original source of the song 'oh oh eththaney azhaku 20 vayathiniley'. its not john susa as i thought it might have been but actually 2, yes two songs, by the famous group The Ventures called 'pedal pusher' and 'walk don't run '64' (not their more famous 'walk don't run). please correct it in the chart. thanks

Addd one more to Deva's cap..this time its from the film Citizen..the third(?) song, which starts with a chorus singing "Take a chance..take a chance" has been directly lifted from Abba's "Take a chance on me"..:-)) the first few words in that song bear the same tune as the starting piece of the English original. Deva has shifted his focus from the 80s to the 70s now..
Soon we can expect to listen to pieces from "Simon and Garfunkel", "Doors" and others in his songs :-)

Mugam title score!...by raja lifted from "Pastorale" by Igor Stravinksy. He lifted the chord progressions and manged to built an Indian melody on top of it. [What is Mugham, now?]
The number titled "baby elephant walk " henri mancini number has been used in "1000 thil nAn oruvan" (the main theme is used by lot of ppl while showing guNdu kalyaNam" ) the one that goes in the BG has been "deva"ed by arr...[Searched for this, in vain]
The song Srikant was talking about is from the movie "Hatari" and music composed by Mancini.[I've Hatari theme, its vastly different from aayiratil naan song]
Maan oothu mandhayilae .....the beat pattern are similar to a song from a group called oregon.[No idea! anybody else?]
En Jodi Manjal Kuruvi - Vikram - from Katchaturian [which song by Katchaturian? I've heard a few like sabre dance but doesnt sound like the vikram song!]
Can anyone tell me whose the MD for the song "devi koondhalo.. brindavanam"? Its a lift from Frank Zappa's "Happy Together" from his album Filmore East: June 1971.
Guru(Malayalam)'s title music is inspired from the famous "Greensleeves" composed by Vaughan Williams. [Is it?]
the interludes of the first song from avvai shanmughi was from tchakovsky`s nutcracker suite.
the opening guitar piece of 'july maadham vandhaal' is a direct lift from the opening lines of the song 'puttin' on the ritz' by Taco. [wow?]
To my shock, the great IR has also copied. The one I noticed - "Vaanam angae ponal enna....Boomi ingae vandhal enna" starring Kamal from "You can't hurry love" by Phil Collins. [This I'm really curious! Can anybody add more info, sound clip etc?]
the initial guitar piece in the title song from 'kandukondain-kandukondain' is definitely lifted. i remember listening to that piece by someone called 'Suko' (or something like that) from an album which was part of a series called 'World Music' by Music Today [more info?]
Aatama paatama from Nadigan (Music: Ilaiyaraja) is copied from the 60's Rock 'n Roll classic No particular place to go by Chuck Berry. [more info?]

Karthik...add this too..."
Vande Mataram" title track has a similar melody line to Sting's "If I could ever lose my faith in you" from his Fields of Gold album. (Incidentally, the video also has a desert backdrop like the "If I could ever"..maybe an inspiration for Bharathbala who shared it with ARR and hence the tune !!)

I havent heard the original by Phil, so cant comment! But I do remember listening to Chuck Berry's 'No particular place to go' and I do remember that it had a line or two with the same tune as 'oru nadigan indru maariyachu, powder pottu pottu kocham pochu'...but this was loooong back, so I cant confirm it either....
Gotto listen to them again!

Could confirm one...the song 'devi koondhalo...brindhavanam' is a c-a-p from the song 'so happy together'. Frank Zappa merely did a cover version of it and it became popular. The original was by The Turtles.
Here's the song!
