The old spice commercial track was of course 'o fortuna', from the collection Carmina Burana by Carl Orff.
There was another post in another DF that the Lagaan theme sounds like Orff's Ave Formosissima!
Guess both are wrong. Its the genre thats alike and its definitely not inspired. Its actually the eerie and sweeping chants that looks alike but its no way copied or inspired.
Incideantally, Michael Cretu (of Enigma) used Orff's O Furtuna (with permission and due credit, of course, he's no Anu Malik!) in his Gravity of Love!

You're right! What a surprise! 'Naan aanayittal' does seem inspired from Joaquin Rodrigo's Concierto de Aranjuez!!!!
Wow, looks like we are really indebted to Western Classical! But to be fair, the tamil version was a good number and has been indianised very well, what with those powerful lyrics and the inimitable MGR ishtyle to go with it!!!

Again as SL had mentioned earlier in this thread Vaseegara's initial few bars DO sound like the charanam of the Don number 'aye mera dil pyaar ka diwana'!
I really wouldnt call it copy or even inspiration. This could sum up as a song Harris (and most of us too) might have grown up with, which been in the back of his mind and incidentally comes out in the form of his imagination, particularly 'cos he is a composer.
Needless to say, Vaseegara is really an exotic song, just marred by some really insipid picturisation by Gautam Menon. Wonder why Vashu Bhagnani chose him to direct the hindi remake!

KArthick, good points, vaseegara is really smooth number, the best part is you (atleast I am ) are not bored by the song inspite of hearing twice or thirce a day. Simple arrangement, few days ago I got the CD, It made me hate real audio more than before, in raaga.com, real audio has reduced the songs quality by 50%.
btw:Gautam is learning!.., we will see, btw: harris jeyaraj is working in rajeeve menons next movie, "arr" is given galtha or decently we can call it volentery step down by Arr.

Hi,
as i said harris jeyaraaj needs to see his songs go into a good movie to really see him coming up.
nowadays everyone seems to have talent but luck needs to favor him. if he doesnt get good directors then he will be like adithyan, the guy who did music for sakthi(achuvellame achuvellame) and our IR of recent days!

As far as I know, today I read in THE HINDU that HJ, RM and Vijay have recently worked for a Coca cola ad. I didn't see it yet, but my brother saw it and said that, it is like a Ghaana song.

You DID know or you DIDN'T know? If you didn't, please listen to 'ettaNaa irundhaa' (some Rajkiran movie). Also if you notice, VV sings bits of old songs in most of the movie he acts. In 'sangamam' he sings 'naan Erikkarai' (chinnaththaayi). He has a very good raagam sense also.

frankly I did not know before this song, singing in movie is different from recording.

anand/gopal/shalin , they are well known in the jingle world, has their own studio setup in chennai. Anand is related someway to Arvind swamy,

CF,
Yes. agosh is the md for harichandra. Other movies include zor (hindi), kodeeswaran ( not released).
Anand's solo movie is sakthi ( it has another good song - aararo enbadellam thai padum thalattu). I think, he also scored music for one santhosh sivan 's malayalam movie.
I think, anand studied in roorkie.

Copying is not the first thing that comes in my mind for any song. I really try to enjoy every good song and in the due course of listening, if I happen to find any resemblence then that is a different matter. But, I will still enjoy the any such song if it is good. For example the "Azhagu Azhagu.." song of Basha was a heavyly inspired song of "Dilbur..." of film Carvan by RDB. But, I still love the tamil version.

i didnt say achuvellame was by adithyan (notice i was separating the 3 instances with commas ) i dint know the MD's name so i just put it as the the guy who did achuvellame
bm!
okay! MJ has bought all copyrights and ownership rights of that song and also most of beatles so that in order to use these songs people now have to get his permission and he can use these songs in construction if his album or in his concert or some other purpose without any problem
anyway MJ , while releasing "history" released carminaburana as an appetiser and I clearly remember carminaburana as a song and not as an album.
even when i searched carmina burana in napster(6 months ago) I got it as a song by carl off not as an album!! so thats why i am surprised
bye

Bharath:
I'm really surprised at the suggestion that MJ (of all the ppl in this earth!) owns the rights to Carmina Burana!!!
Just to give you a backgrounder...
Carmina Burana is a collection of songs, poems and short plays found in a abbey near Munich. They were supposedly discovered there in 1803 and carbon dating (done much later) revealed that they were 13th century German manuscripts. It was a person named Johann Schmeller (I've never known anything more about this guy!!) produced a complete edition of the poems and gave it the title Carmina Burana, literally meaning "Songs of Beuern". Most of the text is in Latin and Middle High German.
Now for the Carl Orff connection...
Carl Orff composed music for the Carmina Burana collection between 1935 to 1942. He used the voice as the first and most natural of instruments. He also made the ostinato (a repeated rhythmic, spoken or sung pattern) as the basis of all improvisations.
Its considered one of the most mature form of music, ever.
Now where does MJ come into the picture? I'm sure he does not own the rights to the original set of poems...the germans will lynch him if he tries anything of that sort! Every composer who had subsequently used Carmina Burana has merely interpreted Orff's version on his/her own terms and nobody has ever tried composing it fresh again. Including Michael Cretu of Enigma...his interpretation was very very similar to Orff's!
