Often we listen to songs that we feel deserves more appreciation or we discover songs that somehow escaped the attention of listeners or were masked by other popular songs from the same movie. The joy of sharing such discoveries with others could be boundless.
This thread is going to do exactly that.
Songs we host could be really rare or not so rare. We are not limiting to just hosting them.
Many of the songs will be analyzed in detail by carnatic vocalist Mrs Charumathi M.
We are going to start with one song a week. We will try our best to upload the songs in newtfmpage but in rare occassions we might just give you the song link.
Finally, if you feel you have a song that you want to share it with rest of us or if you want us to load a particular song, please let us know and we will try our maximum best to meet your request.
If you want to post comments on older songs, pls go to this archive. There you'll find the previous songs indexed as separate threads. Post your comments on the appropriate thread.

I'm not sure of the accuracy, this is what cinesouth database says:
Archanai pookkal *ing kapildev, sulakshana. Dir: gokula krishnan.

Good song!! One of Laxminarayanan's [is the name right?] articles says that "conspicuously Ilayaraja has not scored any good Panthuvaraalis." Wrong!! I counted about eight, all good IMO:
1. Rojaavai Thaalaattum Thendral (Ninaivellaam Nithya)
2. Enna Varam Vendum (Nandhavana Theru)
3. Nalla Neram Neram (Antha Oru Nimidham)
4. Manmadha Raagangale (Baalanagammaa)
5. Piraiye Piraiye (Pithaamagan)
6. Modern Concerto (Raja Paarvai)
7. Chamber Welcomes Thyagaraja (How To Name It)
8. Vazhimel Vizhaiyaai (Archanai Pookkal)

Great!!! This is a rare gem and I have heard it just couple of times decades ago. This song seems to be a precursor for many songs in the Kamavardhini scale that followed later like Ravindran's "nalam vaazhave naan paaduven" also by SJ .GangaiAmaran also dabbled with it in "Gyabagam illaiyo kanne"

I remember watching this movie during my 6th or 7th or 8th Standard. Cinesouth's information is not correct. As told by Ramki, it had Mohan, Savitha & Chandrasekar (in a guest role, who dies in an accident in this movie). I thought it was a good movie, then. I'm not sure if I'll stick to that opinion now, if I happen to watch it again

The theme of the song is a lady's romantic dream about marriage and life after (similar to 'nenjinile nenjinile'). As she starts feeling the happiness, it seems to grow skywide and she wants to be drenched. And so is calling for the 'maamugil'?! That's probably why the song starts with 'amirathavarshni' (raga associated with rain). IR has chosen 'pantuvarali' as main raga to give a yearning feel to the song. The raga change is wonderful. Just listen to the prelude, it's actually raga morphing. First it gets bhoopalam-ish and then pantuvarali blooms.
vazhi mel vizhiyaai ethirpaarthirunthen
nee varuvaai maamugile
sugam aegaandhamaai malara
athu aagaayamaai viriya
Watch the kenjal in 'nee'. Also the glide in 'viriya' and how chords supplement it. You can feel the 'virinjufy'!
Usually most of the songs have 'sama eduppu' (the start of the beats and music coincide). I believe this is one of the rarest songs having 'atheedha eduppu' (music before beat starts). In fact, throughout pallavi and all charanams, mostly. Why? Because she is ahead and waiting for it to happen! That fits the theme of waiting for marriage and all!! cool, isn't it? :)
At the end of charanam 1, as she sings 'mana maalai
kollum velai vandhaal vaibogame', her longing becomes too much as reflected aptly in the following 'izhuthukkondu paadum' pallavi. Pantuvarali has been used nicely here I think. Similarly at the end of the song.

THE SECOND INTERLUDE GIVES A FOLK-TYPE OF FEELING AT THE BEGINNING AND THEN MERGES INTO A MODERN EXTRAVAGANZA OF A FLUTE - PIANO COMBINATION REFLECTING THE GENIUS IN ILLAYARAJA .

Heres the next pick:

Song:thannan thanimaiyile
Film: School Master
Singer: PSuseela
Lyrics: Kannadasan
Music: MSV
There are certain songs you can never stop listening to. Even if you stop listening , the song keeps playing in the back of your mind for a while. This is such a song.
It is a simple song but its sheer simplicity wins you over.
-The song is for Sowkar janaki who consoles her husband played by Gemini Ganesan after he feels sad on his retirement.
Kannadasans lines, as ever, magnificient.
But the real winner is Susheelas voice. She gives the apt gambeeram in the pallavi and charanam. The slight shivering she brings in her voice at the end is just brilliant.
'School Master' had Gemini, sowkar, sivakumar, kumari padmini and nadigar thilagam in a guest role. Other noteworthy song in the film is 'poongodiye poongodiye'
This film was made in telugu, kannada and Hindi. Sivaji ganesan played the guest role in hindi version too(I think this was is only hindi film).
-The recent bollywood blockbuster 'baaghbaan'(bachan, hemamalini) was heavily inspired from this film
-This song reminds me 'naan aatchi seidhu varum'(aadhiparasakthi). Are they based on same raaga?

What a song!
What powerful emotions it emits!
As a kid, I remember watching this movie and silently shedding tears during this song. Spectacular performance by Gemini Ganesan and Sowcar Janaki.
Even today, when I listen to the song, it brings on a feeling of melancholy - with thoughts of my future when I retire....
This song rates high in my "feelings of abandonment" songs including stunners like Un kannil neer vazhinthaal and Yaarai nambi naan piranthen.
Talking of inspiration this is the song that Deva copied to produce the hit song Konja naal poru thalaivaa!

Ramki, RR: excellent song in Ananda Bhairavi. Other notable old songs are:
1) Poi Vaa Magale (Karnan)
2) Nal Vaazhvy naam Vaazha (Veettukku Veedu)
3) Madurai Meenakshi Manikaratthil (Chellakkili????)
The last one is another MSV-PS gem but I cannot recall the movie name for sure. It does seem like PS's voice is made for this raaga!!

Song: azhagu nilave
Film: Pavithra
Lyrics: Pulamaipithan
MD : ARRahman
-I came across this sweet lullaby only 2 yrs back. I have seen this film on tv but i do not remember watching this song.
"azhagu nilave" is a slow melody(like most of ARRs melodies) beautifully sung by Chitra. Her voice is full of emotion.
-Pavithra had Radhika, Nasser,Ajit and swathi(??).Manobala was the director.
Other songs- 'uyirum neeye' by UK(who bagged his national award for this song along with 'ennavaLe') ,
'sevvanam chinna pen soodum'(Pallavi, Mano),
'mottu vittadhaa'(Swarnalatha),
'eechampazham'(??)(TLM, chitra)
