Often we listen to songs that we feel deserves more appreciation or we discover songs that somehow escaped the attention of listeners or were masked by other popular songs from the same movie. The joy of sharing such discoveries with others could be boundless.
This thread is going to do exactly that.
Songs we host could be really rare or not so rare. We are not limiting to just hosting them.
Many of the songs will be analyzed in detail by carnatic vocalist Mrs Charumathi M.
We are going to start with one song a week. We will try our best to upload the songs in newtfmpage but in rare occassions we might just give you the song link.
Finally, if you feel you have a song that you want to share it with rest of us or if you want us to load a particular song, please let us know and we will try our maximum best to meet your request.
If you want to post comments on older songs, pls go to this archive. There you'll find the previous songs indexed as separate threads. Post your comments on the appropriate thread.

It's an interesting jugalbandi between heavy classical (KJY) and somewhat lighter interpretation (SPB). The lyrics seem to indicate a situation similar to that of 'Ithu namma aalu' song
VJ:sangeetham paada gynam ullavargal vendum
SPB:sangeetham paada kelvi gyanam athu pothum
(where SPB really kalakkified)
Is that so, Ramki?

I agree that the song has an unconventional structure as analyzed by Mrs.Charumathi. To appreciate the 'thaalam' nuances, I think I'll have to listen to the song more. Will post comments later. No doubt this song is a forgotten gem.

Ramki,
>> -IMO that line looks out of place in the beautiful poem..like a jarring note.
He could have written 'nee thenkural naan mellisai inaiyaamal pogumaa' :) >>
I agree!
Infact, on second thought i would imagine - VM would have suggested something like this - but may be ananthu ( the director of "sigaram") wanted a more "conventional" uvamAna varigaL there?!! ??
I'm not sure about the excact situation - but i just remember that SPB plays an upcoming music director, with Radha playing an MBBS student who is deeply into singing as a passion - and they both fall in love - music binds them together - and this song is their expression of mutual love!

hhhw,
gimme the link to that pulamaippiththan thread buddy! am not sure abt which one u r referring to!

Ramki: The quotes probably confused some readers.
Sudha Dhanyasi is identified as a derivative of Todi,Natabhairavi and Kharaharpriya. I think Todi is wrong. Dhanyasi is a derivative of Todi.
The commonly accepted practice (not a rule) is to assign as parent scale the first raaga in the raga chakra (serial order of parent scales or melakartas) that the derivative can be associated with. In this case #20 Natabhairavi is appropriate. But, some experts have identified it with #22 Kharaharapriya. Todi is #8. Keeravani is #21 between Natabhairavi and Kharaharapriya. What did IR use to begin with #20,#21 or #22 ? What is his favourite among the three?

RR almost similar. In this film the songs comes when the guru wants to test the music ability of the hero..
Geno interference of Ananthu is a possibility

Raj: that probably adds another level of confusion. Ramki is short for ramakrishnan :) I think you meant Charumathi and Lakshminarayaan.

Raj Mrs charumathis comments are on the featured song
Lakshminarayans analysis on the raaga is taken from the classical IR thread

If its confusing then i will stop posting Lakshminarayans analysis

what the correct parent raga of suddha dhanyasi is a minor concern, IMO. I think Lakshminarayanan's writeups surely enrich our discussion.

Ramki: You do what you think is right! It is quite possible some uninitiated would learn something about carnatic music reading these posts. We do not want them confused. I read the article in the link you gave me. Personally, I do not think religion and politics have any place in a discussion about music. People from different faiths read these posts!

Song-'Sirpi sedhukkaadha poRsilaiye'
Singer-AMR
MD-GR?
Lyrics?
Film: Edhirpaaradhadhu
There is also a jikki version(happier version) for the gorgeous padmini .
'Edhipaaradhadhu' had Sivaji, padmini and SVSahasranamam(?) in the cast. Story and screenplay was by Director Sridhar.
Jayatv recently had a sridhar special in its thenkinam programme where they mentioned that 'edhipaaradhadhu' was the first feature with his screenplay. When he first narrated the story to sivaji , nadigar thilagam was highly impressed with and accepted immediately to act in the movie. Sridhar then completed the dialogues in 3 days time.
The story was a slightly unusual for those days..padmini, who is in love with sivaji, ends up marrying his father sahasranamam.

'Aruvi Kooda Jathi Illaamal' is a top-notch song, and a real find. Too bad Mr. Iniyavan didn't get popular for his work. Guess with ARR stealing the stage with his first few films, there just wasn't room for anyone else. :-/

purv very true but Iniyavans music had a strong IR influence, right from the choice of singers, orchestration etc

AM Raja's singing is unusual, but superb in this song. His voice seems to break when he sings 'sirpi' and later 'endhan'. He is simply oozing feelings in this song!
The song is also loosely structured to (probably) reflect spontaneity. He starts
sirpi sedhukkaatha porchilaye
en sithathai nee ariyaayo
but in the very next line sings
endhan.. sithathai nee ariyaayo
The pause at 'endhan' is beautiful.
The anupallavi actually comes after the first interlude. So effectively the song has only 1 charanam. (Romba feelings-la authukku mela paada mudiyala pola!)
Another gem!

Thanks for unearthing this forgotten golden song "sirpi sedhukkaadha". Somehow, I feel "chithiram pesudhadi" , which is also a stunner, got inspired from the former.

Heres the latest pick
http://newtfmpage.com/cgi-bin/stream.pl?url=http://newtfmpage.com/songs/vazhimel.rm
Song: vazhi mel vizhiyaai
Film: Archanai pookaL
MD: IR
Singer: SJanaki
Lyrics :?
-This is a beautiful solo by SJanaki. I'm hooked to this gem for past one month. Im wondering how this song escaped the popularity it very much deserves.
-Archanai pookaL had Mohan, shankarabaranam Rajalakshmi, nizhalgaL fame Savitha(who later became Amudha in telserial 'rayil sneham'). I think this film was directed by Ra.Shankaran(The famous chandramouLi of mounaraagam). I remember 2 more songs from this film, the popular 'kaaviriye kaaviriye' and generally unknown 'aavaram kaatukuL devaaramaa'(UmaRamanan,MV)
****************************************
Mrs Charumathi writes(in her own words)
"vazhimEl" is based on kamavardhani raaga. Kamavardhani raaga is also called as
panthuvarali.
It is 51 melam and has the following "aarohana", "avarohana" and "swarasthanam"
Aro: Sa Ri1 Ga2 Ma2 Pa Da1 Ni2 Sa
Ava: Sa Ni2 Da1 Pa Ma2 Ga2 Ri1 Sa
This song is set to "Adi thalam". Rhythmically this song is specially composed
with
"athetha edupu" ie the song starts before the beat starts.
IR has taken Da2 swarasthana from 3rd line of pallavi and musically changed the
structure of the raaga.
The beginning interludes are set to different raagas; It starts with like
Amirthavarshini
and ends like boopalam. IR has used "chendu" (Percussion instrument in Kerala)
in
between pallavi and charanam that adds quality to the composition.
S.Janagi has given sweet bhavam to this song. Mirudhangam and thabla played at
the same
time with same jadhi, which makes it a pleasant hearing.
about pandhuvarali:
This is exactly prati Madhyama Melam of the 15th Melam Mayamalavagaulai. It is
an ancient
raagam - in former times it was also called "Ramakriya". The ancient Pann
"Sathari"
is the same as pandhuvarali. In Hindustani music, it is called "Purvi That".
