  Geetha Y,
  How do we determine the raaga for a song when it could be commenced with more than one note. For example :- "Andru vanthathum ithe nila" can be started with "Sa" as well "Ga". When I start with "Ga", the resultant Raaga is Shankarabharanam and it is different when I start with "Sa". What raaga will this song belong to ? Please advice.

  Sriram, I think, for that song, or any song, we can start with Sa, Ga or any other note, which will make the Ragam the same, but the Shruthi different. If I sing it in 5, it starts with a Pa, if you sing it in 3, it starts with a Ga.... In the case of playing it on a keyboard, it all boild sown to TRANSPOSING, as you're in effect changing the base note, but keeping the Ragam the same.... Does this shread any light? I hope I'm actually comprehending your question correctly.....Sorry if I'm not....

  The raga of "Kannodu Kanbadellam" is AbhEri, as RR suggested. I thought I'll add my thoughts on this, as raga AbhEri has changed over time.
  I would classify this raga as "karnAtaka dEvagAndhAri" instead of AbhEri. What is the difference? There is no difference today, but they were different ragas, at one point of time. Let me not get into to the technical differences, unless there is more interest on this topic. To appreciate the difference, you should *feel*
  the difference between S. Janaki's classic: "singAra velanE dhEva" and "kannodu kAnbadellam". You should *feel* the difference between "nagumOmu ganalEni" of St. Thyagaraja and "panchAshatpIta roopini" of Muthuswami Dikshitar.

  Please tell us more.... I'm definitely interested and so will others be, I believe. I agree about 'feeling' the difference, but please point out what they are in the songs Kannodu and Singaravelan..... Sriram and I(and many others here) are farmiliar with notation, so please feel free to express it in this way, it will be extremely well appreciated.
  
  As we know, Bhimplaas is also very much like Abheri, e.g., listen to Vellai Thaamarai, which is sung in both Ragas. However, I fail to see where the Karnataka Dhevaghandari comes in Kannodu.... Please enlighten. Many Thanks.

  Vijay: Paartha Vizli is in Paavani Ragam, which is close to Varali and a Melakartha.
  
  There is a Rare Ragam Bhavaani, which the song Unnai Endri(Sudha R) is in, which is also a nice Ragam.

  R1- suddha rishabam, R2-chathusruthi= G zero-suddha gantharam, R3-shadshuthi = G1-saatharana gantharam, G2 is anthra gantharam. So R3 is not G2 I meant.

  In response to your earlier discussion about the question... would starting the same song with different swarams end up being different ragams?
  I tried varaveena starting with pa. It goes
  pp n1.n1. Sn1 R3.R3. GR3 SSn1 where as
  g2g2 p. p. d2p S. S. R2S d2d2p is the original.
  
  Playing in 2 1/2 kattai starting with pa is essentially playing the 4 1/2 black keys only ragam mohanam, just different names for the KEYS. But starting with p definitely give a different swaras S r3 g2 p n1.

  thing is i just joined in into this, also i am now a days listening to a song from en swaasa kaatrae, it is "theendai enai theendai", to my knowledge I found it resembling the song "rukku rukku rukku arae baba rukku" from avvai shanmugi, Am i right on this, if not correct me.
  If iam right i would like to know what raga are the songs based on.

  I heard from Sun TV program that rukku rukku is on Ananda Bairavi ragam. I am not sure.

  Rama/Dhandapani: The song Rukku Rukku is in SAHANA RAGAM(like Indha Veenakku(Rail Shnehitham TV Serial - by V Narashimhan), whilst Theendai is in SRI RAGAM(like Andhi Maalai from Fantasy/Thygaraja Krithi Endharoma which was featured in Deva Ragam)....No connections there, I believe.....
