bb, Thats indeed a great pick. The Song is one of the best in recent times. One must really gaze at how IR returns with haunting melodies over time and again....
The song is a lovely duet with melancholy poignantly mixed with gratitude towards their beloved. The violin accompanying the vocals at time, expresses this feeling aptly.
When the sound of bullock carts abruptly stops the song and then when kamal sings "Kaatu vazhi" the composition is simply out of the world.
The small conversation between kamal and abhirami embellishes the song further more. A wonderfull treat to all music lovers across the planet. A great song...a truly out of the world melody.
I 've always believed that "you can take ilayaraja out of a tamilian , but not his songs". True! How true!!

Shreya has done a excelelnt job with good pronounciation and modulation. Indeed, it is one of the best songs in the album. Other songs I like in the same movie are "Maada Vellaka" and "Annalatchmi" and "Kombula Poova Chuthi". In the recent days, I liked only two albums. They are KKS and Virumandi. Both have good songs. Rest all are just mediocre in my opinion.

Great pick. I got hooked onto the song the day it was released and am yet to stop humming it. The USP of the song is its simplicity. As someone mentioned, the interludes are brilliant and for me this song alone is worth the movie's soundtrack. I have been disappointed with a lot of Raaja's compositions over the last few years and believed that Hey Ram was one of last certifiable brilliant Raaja albums and bang..comes Virumaandi.
Whether the movie lives up to the hype or not,I am sure justice will be done to this song..and fans will be listening to this song for a long time to come.

Nice song,
shreya has done better than her contemprories.Still not without mistakes though.had to hear 5 times to understand the word VAKKAPADA in the start istself, she is singing that as VAKKU PADA. odanai as oDDanai.
great work by maestro though.Sustaining the words in the charams kind of creates a haunting feeling.I think this song will be apt for rethinking an old memory also. Can some one explain the song technically :).

p, although your post (and as a matter of fact, mine too!!) is a digression from discussing the SOTD, i must admit that the above song you have mentioned is my pick as the best in the album.
If you notice, in the song, as the singers tell the tale of virumaandi, the tempo of the song changes to suit the narration. From Terror to agony , then to indignation and then to gratitude all in one song. Wow! thats the power of folk songs man. IR achieves this by aptly using percussion to sustain the tempo. A truly magnificient effort.

p, Osho, how much in that therukkooththu composition was IR's? I guess most of us have heard the tunes in that song already (or close to the tune). That is probably why the song didn't impress me. What makes this therukkooththu song unique and stand out among other therukkooththu songs?

Excellent post, p. Do you think "thondru thottu indru varai" from Avathaaram is a good therukkooththu song? I also like the one from Devathai "andan kidukidunga".

bb, As a matter of fact, i havent heard much of the therukkuthu songs in films. I am 26 and a serious listener of music and appreciate music which is of high quality. THe fact, that the therukkuthu song reminded me of my town, and invoked a nostalgia towards a trip down the lane to the wonderfull villages surrounding my town, made me feel that this was indeed a good song. One that immensely impressed me with its authenticity over the other tracks. THe simple fact that we dont hear Therukkuthu in films can also be a factor to my likening. Films in TN, have long ago, shed their focusses to villages. I am not sure why!!. May be thats one reason we dont hear as many songs now a days which has a authentic folk flavour.
Coming back to the song, i am pretty sure that IR would have complete authority towards the therrukkuthu song in the album and would have deffinitely made improvisation. If you could throw some light on other therukkuthu songs i can hear and there by realign my thoughts to this therrukkuthu song, i would be greatfull to you.
