Balaiyahs daughter Manobala made her debut in 'chinnanchiru kiLiye'. She later acted in 'oru odai nadhaiyaagiradhu' and couple of other films

Ramki- Thanks for the info. And after a long gap after Odai Nadhiyaagirathu, she has started acting again. She had a small role in Pandavar Bhoomi.
Btw, isn't her name Manochitra?
Raj, "Naan paartha rathi devi' is definitely a ALR solo

Saravanan you could be right, but somehow i remember her as manobala. Apart from films, I think she is also crying in some megaserials.

Saravanan,
Seems like you edited a little more than necessary to reduce the noise or something like that. The song sounded with 'added effects' !
This song sounded distinctly 'Ilayaraja'ish to me. I should probably put it the other way around.
AL Raghavan was a producer too ! Could you share more info on his contribution to Tamil Film Music, please ? (maybe on another thread)

Excellant santoor work.Greig Edward's Peer Gynt "Morning mood"opening movement crosses my mind.A distant inspiration?
Malaysia Vasudevan ...varthaigalai ennum oru azhuthu azhuthiyiruntha Kumar Sanu side kku poiruppar.Thappichom!Listening to the song after a very long time ....very long time.Enjoyable..
GKV must have been really confused because by 1981 he was running the risk of getting branded as an IR clone even while employing his own style.

OISG,
The morning mood is instantly created by the Bhoopalam ragam. In the charanams, it proceeds to another raga though. In any case, no need for a distant inspiration I guess ;)

Saravanan, Manochitra it is.(you were right as usual) manobala if i am not mistaken is the emaciated person who made Gopurangal saivathillai & other duds.
By the way what role did Manochitra play in "Pandavar Bhoomi"?

Vengayam, I remember that Manochitra was one of the women in Rajkiran's household- perhaps his wife? She appears in the 'Avaravar vaazhkayil' song too.

Song of the Day: mazhaik kaalamum panik kaalamum from Savithri.
http://www.newtfmpage.com/cgi-bin/stream.pl?url=http://www.dhool.com/sotd/mazhaikkaalamum.rm
- This melodious, semi-classical song is sung by Vani Jayaram and Jayachandran. Music by MSV.
- In the song, it is interesting to see VJ get the more classical, complex parts while Jayachandran basically is there for the ride.
- Any info on this movie?

bb,
>>- Any info on this movie? <<
Plenty! 'Savitri' starred Menaka and another actor (Somayajulu's brother??) as her Shastri husband. The film was the Tamil version of an earlier Malayalam original which had a decent run in Kerala.
Around 1980, reservations in TN had just been hiked to 68% as against the earlier 50% and this had upset many forward communities, including Brahmins. Some loose outfits were being formed as a platform for Brahmins to express their dissent. This film had mild traces of adultery, being poetically justified. This incensed the TN Brahmin community and demonstrations were held in many theatres across TN. Even a case was filed in Madras High Court. I think the court said they didn't find anything objectionable whatsoever. CM MGR is said to have commented " When people didn't object to 'arangERRam', why are they objecting now?" Saavi wrote ' oru nalla samoogaththai izhivu paduththi iruppadhaagak kObap pattirukkiRaargaL. oru nalla padaththaik keduthirukkiRaargaLE enRu kObap pattirukkalaam!"
Around the same time, Ananda Vikatan Golden Jubilee award went to Anuradha Ramanan's novel 'siRai' (filmed subsequently with the same name). She was also 'gherao'ed in quite a few meetings.
Menaka's earlier (first) film 'raamaayi vayasukku vanthuttaa' also figured in TN elections in 1980! DMK coined the slogan 'raamaayi vayasukku vanthuttaa! thaali ingE, thangam engE?!!'

Whoa, CV in full flow!
Menaka seems to have arrived with a bang in 1980- both her films that year were spoken of-Ramayi Vayasukku Vandhutta had some good songs by GA. And Lena Productions’ Savitri was bogged down by the controversy that CV mentions.
Savitri, the eldest daughter of a poor Gurukkal is married off as a second wife to a much elder man- another Gurukkul. This man had seen Savithri as an infant, carried her when she was a toddler, and amused her with toys when she was a small girl—and he just cannot come to grips with the thought of now being her husband. Savitri suffers silently the anguish of an unconsummated marriage.
It is in such a situation that a handsome youngster Vinod arrives in the same village (Alwarkurichi, now made famous by Annamalai). And they both are attracted to each other, and Maaran theril vandha oru maalai nerathil the inevitable happens.
A scintillating song by MSV, and sung superbly by JC & VJ, the chorus voices giving the song a dreamy romantic patina. VJ does a class act with her humming bits leading back to the pallavi.
Another good song in the film was ‘Vaazhndhaal unnodu vaazhndhiruppen’ (VJ)

Somayajulu s brother 's name is Ramanamurthy who played Menaka 's husband.
Should i say rare..there is a MV & LRE duet "Manmathan banathai veesiya vegathil" in therukoothu style in Savithri.
CV,your post ....vazhakaiya rewind paNNiya sugam!
It was followed by another Maneka,PRatap starrer "Rani"( I think "Lorry"in Malayalam) directed by Padmarajan(?).It had a fabulous "Venir kala malargalukkor vazhkai vanthathu"a superb SPB-VJ duet.
Ramayai -it was rechristened subsequently after protests by activists."Naalu vagai poovil"the simple and elegant JC-SJ duet was a regular feature in vivdh bharathi those days.(Shades of IR's Poonthendrale nalla neram).
Vinod also starred in Karai Kadantha Oruthi (Kurathi) which too ran into controversies because of the name.
Maneka got into the habit of marrying older men...Durai's oLi piranthathu.SPB's Ambigaye unnai nmabi vanthen for "Paambaatti"Vijayan is one of SPB's all time classic.

KKD s lines mischievous...."Oru veenai thannai ever meetinalum puthithaga thondrum ragam" - Kadhaiyai oru varila solliyachu.

A flu-shot of a song! Mindblowing in every sense - composition, lyrics and singing - and a sad reminder of how culturally rooted film music used to be.
And a perfect antidote to the SJ-SPB bug that's beyond a seasonal visitation at this page.

Song of the Day: onnai vida from Virumaandi.
http://www.newtfmpage.com/cgi-bin/stream.pl?url=http://www.dhool.com/sotd/onnaivida.rm
- Sung by Kamalhasan and Shreya Ghoshal. Music by Ilayaraja. Lyrics by Kamal.
- Let me also join the hype machine :) Everyone seems to have high expectations from Sandiyar, renamed as Virumaandi. The media is also promoting the film endlessly. I just hope this film doesn't end up the way of Hey Ram!
- The film album has about 10 songs, some short and some long. Hopefully, some of them won't find their way into the movie itself. SandiyarE SandiyarE is a nice song by Shreya Ghoshal. Maada viLakkE is a sorrowful song by Kamal. My pick of the album is onnai vida. The slow song picks up in the interludes. The first interlude is a delight and the first charanam keeps the song up. Usually, we see songs with strong pallavis but pathetic charaNams, but in this song, I would say that the charanam is better than the pallavi itself. Shreya Ghoshal seems to have done her homework as far as the pronounciation goes. Kamal too has sung this song well.
- Thread on the film: http://www.newtfmpage.com/forum/15936.11.28.56.html .
Some of the reviews in that thread:
Onna Vida... Wov.. what a melody.. do u think Inji Iduppazhagi can compete with this one.. just wait for the picturisation. Then the people here talked about the pronunciation of Shreya ...huh.. r u guys from Madurai district or what? to comment on her pronunciation.. she took a lot of effort and did a great job... look how she pronounces jenmam as senmam... and jathi as saathi... do u think she killed Madurai tamil.. no way.. don't just close your eyes and blame it on the singers.Even if she is not aware of that Kamal and Raja will never accept that as they very well know about Madurai tamil. 5/5
Isn't onne vida and Chandiyere are cool? They are real good melodies of recent time.
onne vida is one of raaaja's all time best... too good...
This song in the only melodious duet in this album. The lyrics is penned by kamal himself and has good job in bringing out a simple Tamil words that has depth in meaning as lyrics for a duet. Again IR has used guitar, flute and violin with elegance. The song sounds simple but the best in this album. Similar to “Ingi idupazhagi” song in devar magan.Shreya has done a good job because it is difficult singing in Tamil in Madurai slang but she has tried her best. Kamal has sung the song with ease.
I am hooked to Onne Vida. I think this is the best IR song this year and one of his all time bests. I like the simplicity of the music especially the pallavi and lyrics.
"onna vida" is magical!! particularly this passage "saatchi solla vaaruvannn virumandii..." - its soo smoothh... WOW!

bb,
Excellent pick indeed!
The song is the tour de force of the album!
The song starts with the sound of a fast running train and in comes Shreya's "pisir illadha" voice with simple accompaniemnts (what's the stringed instrument used here?)
Her pronunciation is pretty good, with nuances of the Madurai dialect.. note "chandirain" as opposed to chandiran.. typical of Madurai Tamizh (avingya as opposed to avanga).
Soothing 1st interlude followed by the charanam which takes nice twists and turns.. just when you think it is happy, meloncholy creeps in.
The song is also unique for its interesting structure.. note, at the end of the 1st pallavi, just when you think the jingle sound of the cowbells is actually the beginning notes of the 2nd interlude, it is actually a break! And then the pallavi tune is repeated, when kamal sings, "kaattu vazhi kaaLainga kazhuthu maNi..." and then the vibrant 2nd interlude begins.. which is one of the best interludes I have heard recently.
The 2nd interlude has a short conversation between Kamal and Abhirami and is blended well in the song.
Kamal's singing is apt, and his unpolished voice provides the right compliment to Shreya's trained smooth voice. Also, note Kamal's conscious use of La instead of zha, to add to the local flavour.
The lyrics (by Kamal himself) are excellent. Simple and smooth flowing, yet meaningful.
Listening to Abhirami, I wish Kamal had used her in the album at least in one song, as she is a pretty good singer. I have seen her perform on stage and is quite competent and sings very well with excellent Tamil diction and with ease! That would have made it one authentic number, where no playback singer was involved and the lead actors themselves sing, like in a musical!
However this is not to undermine Shreya's singing. She is in excellent form, and her rendition is very good. (a welcome relief from Sadhana)...
The melody will linger on for months to come...
Thanks to IR for yet another quality melody!
