Hi! We've made a major addition to newtfmpage, and that is a big song bank. Dhool features thousands of songs for your listening pleasure. This site is a part of the newtfmpage.com - swara.com group. Together with newtfmpage, we wish to make this the best place to listen to tamil film songs online and know about tamil film music. Our collection includes old, new, famous, rare and unheard of songs. We are still fine tuning and fixing the database errors, so please bear with us. We value your feedback, and this will help us build the site better. Please post your comments below or mail to comments@newtfmpage.com.
This work was done by us (bb and RR) with MS and swara.com ravi.

Song of the day : "maaNikka maamaNi maalaiyil" from "thennankeetru"
http://www.newtfmpage.com/cgi-bin/stream.pl?url=http://www.dhool.com/sotd/maanikka.rm
Udhaya writes:
maanikka maamani maalayil is a rare 70s gem by SPB
and MD: GKV. Right from the unusual pallavi phrasing
to the halt-and-go sandham with short lines followed
by imaginative bursts, this song showcases a smooth
as butter SPB (vennainnu thitturathaa ninaikkavaenaam).
The way he lends continuity to a song while sustaining
the sandham's freshness with surprising emphasis (or
sangathis or gamakams as the technical call it) is
remarkable. For instance, the two words, "naan
kaLLLNNNdathu" have enough creativity to equal a year's
worth of enunciation-challenged songs from contemporary singers.
GKV has added beauty to the song with veenai and other
accompaniments; especially, the ascending trumpet sound
that fades out the song is noteworthy. The movie,
ThennangeetRu was based on a Ko.Vi.MaNisegaran story.
I've always wondered whether the latter penned the lyrics
to this song. Where's Saravanan when you need him?
************
Personally I feel this song is very close to the hindi song by KJY "ek but se mohabbat karke" and the last line of the pallavi ( naan kaNdathu) is very reminiscent of the last of line of the pallavi of "ore naaL unai naan" which ends as "oonjaaladuthu". Though this is a duet, I felt it was a little too rare and hence decided to put it up for the SPB week.
******************************
Folks, if I get the songs you are suggesting I will put them up - sure.

Song of the Day: thendralukku endrum vayathu from payaNam.
http://www.newtfmpage.com/cgi-bin/stream.pl?url=http://www.dhool.com/sotd/thendralukku.rm
- Sung by SPB, music by MSV in this in 1976 film. One of the few qawwali style songs in TFM.
- Another notable song in the film is "aarambak kaalam oru pakkath thaaLam", sung by KJY and VJ.
- Udhaya writes:
thendRalukku endRum vayathu from PayaNam is another MSV/SPB/KD delight (at least I think it's KD, although the style suggest Pulamaippiththan). While the future will fit the sandham in a straitjacket of steady meter to accomodate fancy interludes or inane preludes, this song reminds us of the loose musical canvas where the singer could flaunt his dexterity, where the words weren't shy of being polysyllabic or audible.

BTW, "thenralukku enrum" is not anywhere close to qawali style. There is another typical MSV solo "Payanam" from the same movie.

Song of the Day: oru paadalai from ??
http://www.newtfmpage.com/cgi-bin/stream.pl?url=http://www.dhool.com/sotd/oru_paadalai.rm
- Continuing with his selection of SPB vaaaaaram, MS writes:
This song was provided by Udhaya and once again we have no information about the song. This again is an obscure song of SPB with the lovely voice of SPB having a lilting effect. One of the strong points of a good singer is being able to reproduce the sangathis that he or she sings in a pristine fashion in a previous occassion. I have noticed in many songs that SPB does a
perfect re-rendition of all the sangathis when he is required to sing two charanams as replicas of each other. This is one song which shows us this capability of SPB.
Let me highlight it with examples:
(1) the pallavi - "oru paadalai pala raagaththil unai paarthup paadinen"
He sings exactly the same way twice !
(2) the charanam 1 - endhan paadhaiyil indha dhevathai kuralOsai kEtkiren
undhan nyaabagam varum podhellaam naan "vaanil parakkiren"
the charanam 2 - pani malligai maNa mohini unai marakka mudiyumO
Oraayiram kavi paadiyum idhai "eedu seyyumo"
Both "vaanil parakkiren" and "eedu seyyumo" are rendered exactly the same way !
The tune itself is so nice that it lends itself to be improvised in innumerable fashions. I am sure SPB would have offered many improvs out of which the MD chose a particular pattern and asked SPB to stick to it. That SPB is capable of improvising in innumberable ways are clear in songs like:
(1) nuvvena (thErOttam aanandha shenbaga) - telugu
(2) kadhile meghama - telugu
(3) mazaiyum neeye
(4) kadavuL amaiththu vaiththa mEdai

Certainly bb,
SPB has talents of unlimited sensitivity and depth. The only defect is when and where he becomes insincere and gimmicky, the song is really destroyed. Before the 80s the gimmicks were well in check.

BB
It is from Malligai Mohini by GKV."Julie" Vikram was the hero of this dud movie. The other great song in this movie was "Megangale ingu varungalen" by SPB.A brilliant racy song with SPB at his best.
You will see that this song can seamlessly merge with "Ragam puthu Ragam" by Deepan Chak from "Pennin Vazhkai"/Kashmir Kathali (?) both by GKV.

OISG, malligai mohini other great song by SPB was played very frequently and this one was popular too.
Very Shyam like tunes! usually it amazes me to see that in TFM MDs excel with super melodious charanams, which is not so common in Hindi! and that too, not so popular MDs like GKV, VB, Shyam do better than stalwarts like MSV or even IR in the charanam area!

isai_nanban,
That's a very interesting statement you made about the charanams by lesser knowns like GKV, VB, Shyam being more melodious than the giants. I have often felt that these lesser knowns were a lot more playful or experimental in their sandhams. Perhaps it was as simple as trying to cater to prewritten lyrics, but I love their sandhams for the surprises they pack, the energy and life that the singers bring to these MDs' songs. Perhaps it was the B-movie status that granted these MDs the freedom, whatever the reason, I treasure their uniqueness.
