Ravi,
Nithin's post is very relevant to the topic of 'Creativity of IR'. Sometimes things overlap.
BTW Nithin, You seem to have a wide interest. I have only recently taken to classical music (either Indian or Western). As such I am a novice. Butsince I listen seriously to Mozart (I think I can see his influence on IRs music), Beethoven etc. I can tell IRs style is classical. I am of the same opinion as you re: what he should be doing in the future.
Ram,
If you think EVK is good. I would love to get hold of a CD. If a CD is not available I can arrange for a master to be created. We just need the master tapes. I have to know whom to contact regarding this. I will be in Chennai Sept end. Please let me know if I can meet somebody in this regard when I am there (including you).

Based on the postings in this thread, I have started a new thread "Index list of hard-to-find TFM" to collect in one place all the hard-to-find TFM soundtracks. Please contribute there. I'm cutting and pasting there some of the entries from here.

Guys - Based on everyone's sentiments here on Eera Vizhi Kaaviyangal, I went through my cassette collection (running intro hundreds) and managed to retrieve it. :-))
EVK has a cover with Pratab standing, hands outstretched, orchestra-conducting style. :-))
Sridhar - the song you missed is Pazhaiya soagangal by IR himself.
Now for the bad news. Due to its age, (I think), all the songs in my cassette sound "scratched". :-((

I agree totally with vijay's views on the Poomalai
vaangivathan song in Sindhu Bairavi Movie.
I also feel the this song is the best of all the IRs classical compositions.
I like the last interlude music (just before the Netru Sabathangal Eduthuvitaan..) which has great voilin pieces which blends exceptionally well with the song. What a great compostion.
I should also mention about KJY's voice in this song. His starting alabanai in base voice is just
great (unmatchable).

Is pUttukkaL pOttAlum song from chatriyan considered a jazz like composition ??. It sounds like that to me because of the piano, I guess.
- From: Srinivas (@ pup32.stanford.edu)
on: Thu Dec 10 22:40:51 EST 1998
Kiruba : I felt that it is more of a W.Classical type composition. The piano and the violin in the first interlude are remniscient of W.C pieces, but are more rythmic and notes flow more rapidly. I guess you can call it a distinctly IRish composition. But it is memorable, whatever the classification.

Does anyone remember one of the earliest Maniratnam movies made in Kannada starring Anil Kapoor & Lakshmi (i think) in the lead, Balu Mahendra camera & IR's music? I think it was dubbed in Tamil as "Priya O Priya" but not sure if it was ever released in the theatres. I had a cassette (by Tharangini) which i unfortunately lost while shifting from B'lore to Madras years ago. The songs were just too good, i can't recollect the exact order now, but "Itho En Nenjil" by SJ still haunts me almost a decade since i've last heard it. Would anybody know if this cassette or a CD is still available or the songs are present somewhere on the net?

It IS pallavi-anu pallavi. In fact it was his first movie.

Dear Suresh,
The film you are talking abt has one of the most brilliant pieces of violin as the bbm score. it is none other than "Mella mella ennai thottu" song from "vaazhkai". This comes to back the situation when all go on a picnic. I wish you hear this as I rate it personally as one of the best of IR.
- From: suresh (@ bowerbird.qut.edu.au)

PS, Shankar
Yes, that's the movie. I'm not surprised that you guys knew about it, as I think all the songs in it are landmark compositions. But was the movie made before the Malayalam "Unaru" (*ing Mohanlal)?
Murali Sankar
Yes, I can recall that piece very well. I agree it's just brilliant.

Srinivas: (pUttukkaL pOttAlum from chatriyan)
you mention 'rhythm and notes flow fast'. I think this is what made me think it is jazz. Especially in the beginning of the song. Now listening to the song again the first interlude sounds like waltz. Ofcourse, it is very difficult to categorise because IR adapts/modifies/changes a lot.
Are the other songs in this movie good as well ? I am planning to get the CD.

That's news. I remember disticntly that the Tamil version of the album was a Tharangini release. The last time I went back home, I tried to find it but couldn't as no one seemed to have heard of it. Did u get this HMV release from India? I could ask someone to send me a copy.
Also, does anyone know in which movie the song "Madhumalargale thinam lalalala" sung by M.Vasudevan & SJ(?) appears? Is it Madhumalargal?
That was another marvellous no. I think it had one of the shortest charanams for an IR song..

Kiruba/Srinivas,
The song pootukkal Pottaalum from Chatriyan is very similar (atleast the begininnig few lines )to " Sound of Music " song "Favourite things".. After the first few lines, there is a lot of difference.. I am listening to SOM soundtrack as i am writing this..
I think somebody already mentioned this in some other thread.

Kiruba : You are right!! The first interlude is certainly WALTZ.
I noticed it too- I am not 100% sure, but I think Waltz is also an ofshoot of WCM. Some of Tchaikovsky's ballets and some Strauss pieces (both WCM composers) are classic Waltz pieces.
I also think that there is little/ no influence of Jazz in this song (correct me if I am wrong).
I have not yet managed to identify an authentic jazz piece when I hear one, but my intuitive feeling is that Jazz pieces are usually on Sax (like the famous sax piece from "Chiku Buku Rayile" in Gentleman).
MSK : You are right too!. This song (esp the piano chords) is heavily inspired from "Favorite Things"
song of SOM. And the similarity ends with the first few lines.
Both are excellent songs and part of my "Favorite things". :-)

I happened to see the film, "Uruvam". It was a horror movie with Mohan ("Mike" Mohan dhaan), Pallavi in the lead roles. The film didn't have a popular star cast and all. The director was also quite new. The story and dialogues were written by Viswam, who is also not that popular. It had only one popular name. MD - Ilayaraja. The film had no songs. But the BGM!!! Brilliant!!! I wonder if any other MD (even Hollywood) has performed better in BGM for a horror film than IR. In few words, we can summarize the creativity of IR - "It is incomparable". Have anyone of you seen this film?
- From: Shankar (@ webgate0.mot.com)
on: Mon Dec 14 23:23:13 EST 1998
Shanmugam,
I too saw the movie in "dhigil iravugaL" series in Sun-TV. I didn't know that the MD was IR.
Esp those scenes when the camera moves in and around the haunted house, the BGM is terrific.
BTW, R P Viswam is a famous villain actor (he died recently)
