Mail is on the way. I hope it will reach Raja soon. My friend's name is Socrates. He is associate dir. of "Manasukkul Varalama". He has links with son of R.D.Baskar, the elder brother of Raja.

Hello friends:
My name is Sriram, and I work in a MNC at Madras. Like all of you, I believe that Ilayaraja is one of the geniuses of Indian cinema. I would like to share with you the names of certain movies which I believe contain some of Raja's best songs.
Before I proceed to do so, let me name THE ONE MOVIE which I personally rate as Raja's ALL TIME BEST. Now, I am sure that most of you would not have heard about this movie, since it got released only for the afternoon show in one of the theatres in Devi Complex, Madras, where it ran only for a couple of weeks (in the late 1970s). Nevertheless, I and a small coterie of my friends (hardcore Raja fans) believe that this specific movie is indeed Raja's best. The name of the movie is:
Eera Vizhi Kaaviyangal
Literally translated, so that you all get the name right, the name is:
Eera (Wet) Vizhi (Eyes) Kaaviyangal (epic tale)
From what I understand from my brother, who is the only person I know who has seen this movie, Raja scored music free for this movie (director was the late Bhim Singh's son). Raja has experiemented a lot in this movie, and the songs in this movie can be rated along with the world's best recorded music such as Miles Davis' "Kind of Blues" album, Tchaikovsky's "Swan Song", etc.
Here are the other movies which contain absolutely phenomenal Raja songs:
1. Nizhal thedum nenjangal
2. Archani pookkal
3. Metti
4. Ponnu oorukku pudusu
5. Chakkalathi
6. Nandu
7. Pootadha Poottukkal
8. Kann Sivandhal Mann Sivakkum
9. Manjal Nila
10. Ruchi Kanda Poonai
11. Gramathu Athiyayam
12. Aval appadi than
13. Kazhugu
14. Thai Pongal
15. Kallukul eeram
16. Bhagavadhi puram railway gate
17. Avar enekke sondham
18. Poondhalir
19. Karumu vil
20. Mudhal iravu
21. Uravadum nenjam
The list goes on ....
The above is just an extract from the comprehensive database of Raja's "enduring best" songs, which I am constructing now.
For a long time, I and our small group have monopolized "Eera Vizhi Kaaviyangal". It is time that this is shared with all Raja music lovers.
I have managed to locate these songs from a music shop in Ambattur which is closing now. Should any of you guys need any of these songs, please let me know. I can send one cassette to one of you, and you guys can get it copied and distributed amongst yourselves and with other Raja fans you may know of.
By the way, I am planning to meet Raja personally to find out whether he agrees with our rating of "Eera vizhi kaaviyangal" as his all-time best. I am very sure that he will be quite surprised that anyone even knows about this movie, much less anyone having heard the 5 songs in the movie over 10,000 times (that's right, 10,000 times translates to approx. 174 days of listening time). And, I am sure, I will listen to these songs another 10k times, if I live that long. Once you listen to these songs, they start growing inside you, and become a part of your mental furniture, your psychological fabric!

I tried hard last time I was in Chennai, to get hold of this album. Era Vizhi Kaviyangal. I hold the same opinion as you and your friends about EVK. I have never seen Raja experiment as he has done in this album and produce an impossible creation. I also rate it alongside Tchaikovsky's ballet overtures. In fact, in western classical music Tchaikvosky, Beethoven and Chopin have produced some unusual music, just as Raja is doing today by the thousands!
I need to get hold of this album and I would like to have someone from home contact you and pick up a original cassette or recording from you.
I used to be a visitor some 15 years back at Prasad studios to watch Raja. What is the latest from Prasad studios? Can you give us at TFM an update? What is this song from the movie POONTHOTTAM. Please reply to us at TFM

(PLEASE NOTE, THIS IS A DUPLICATE POSTING)
IT will be a good change of style or pace for Raja, if directors like Sankar really could get Raja to compose for them.
Most importantly, I feel it is time IR ventured out on creating songs or music more introspective in nature, you know, slower, deliberate concerto style and fewer of the catchy quick paced melody numbers. I think Vidyasagar is someone who is trying to do something of that nature, but is not quite effective. It is really noticeable in the interludes of Vidyasagar.
Symphonies are by nature somewhat introspective and it will be a revelation to see, if IR has really got into that mood, when the Symphony is within our reach soon.
Such introspective music will be practicable if we have the musicals/opera type theater performances. Something like the CATS, Phantom of the Opera, Jesus Christ Superstar or Marriage of the Figaro. I think a market for such kind of creativity have yet to emerge in India. Most of western classical music is devoted to romance and introspection.
However, if such themes arise, IR can really have a field time producing those one hour long albums which are slow in nature and have the basis for producing a theme that develop gradually. Aah, yes I remember the best example is the Miss World Contest for which IR composed music. However, that had short pieces with more emphasis given on dance tempo.
Just what I feel is what would be a change of pace for Illaiyaraja. What do you folks think?

Hi Sujatha and Veera,
I was going through the discussion and it was really great. Sujatha, like you I am fan of Raja's songs and old tamil songs. www.tamilwold.com has a pretty good collection of songs and it has songs like 'Eatho ninaivukal manathiley' and much more.
And Veera, I am interested in getting hold of raja's rare tamil and Telegu song collection. If you could help out with it I will be thankful.
I live in New York. Bye for now.

Well, I have all the songs of EVK. One of the brilliant albums ever produced by Raja. It has five songs in all. Two of them are sung by K.J.Yesudas. Rest by Raja. I live at Edison, NJ. The recording was done by me from an obscure music store at Ambattur (believe me, I had to hunt it down all the way from Meenambakkam). The recording is from a EP disc with lot of scratch noise. I can not help it. If somebody is interested, let me know. May be, I can mail a copy. How much would be the shipping cost for a kaset in U.S ?
