I saw Virumandi by paying extra.
Why KAMAL..? Why u proved all that told by K.Balachander in Virumandi VIZHA.
It is better to have directors like BHARATHAN ( DEVAR MAHAN ) to deliver a good interesting movie.
Virumandi was very raw and not able to sit in the second half.
Dont confuse the audience with ur confused state of mind.
Iam UPSET and my friends ridicule me as a fan of yours.

a word about illayaraja - the songs goes into your heart and mind. it mingles with you.
if some one says IR music is bad in this movie - you are kid. you should watch movies like Kurumbu, Thiruda Thirudi, Success, Ice...
If you want quality movie see this. DONT compare Virumandi with any Tamil movies released so far.. Why tamil, any INDIAN movies released so far. If Lagaan is the best that India produced, I am sure the world will talk more about Virumandi. I hope Kamal does proper publicity to international audiance, the way Amir does.
ALSO, IF YOU SEE VHS/VCD/PIRATED DVD of this movie, please shun it. Report to www.kamalhaasan.net.

virumaandi.
Thanks to Kamal for bringing us a refreshing movie.great action by all except nasar, rohini
very good art settings,Music
some interesting bits in random order
+) Abhirami and Kamal in the kinaru padi. Short bit, but IR BGM is so good and mild it really create a mood for serene love
+) Nice talk with Abhirami and kamal proposes a name for the kid, abhirami preference is Tendulkar. Later after marriage she says she doesn't want to name the kid as tendulkar. Nice touching connection
+) On police search to nallamma naikar house, the old lady does a bit of smart thinking and drives the cop out of the house. Kamal with out a word just falls at her feet.
+) In Spore every one enjoyed a bit when kamal says he has thrashed a cheena karan in spore. edunkiya kannerunthvanellam Bruce li ellai. Nice comedy
+ when kamal gives a interview on tv he may live but he may not live happily and just wipes his eyes
Movie as a whole has lot of interesting bits to enjoy and cherish. but somehow I find the flow is not maintained.
Particularly this movie projected as something against death sentence. But the story is in and out a feud on an asset and complication what so ever. there is no great relevance to the message just apart from kamal gets the same punishment. In the end Kamal makes a statement that Jail may not be place where convicts are corrected etc. but Is the questioning the methodology of Crimal arrest or death sentence. Rohini character is just reduntant just used as a medium to communicate two versions of the story. In that case, why she want to interview kothala thevar because he is not sentenced. Finaly in the end she shouts "dont shoot" in english (as Abhirami has no scope for using english) and give a crappy message in tv.
Nasser, can consider himself lucky that he acted in an english movie. He gives a pistol to kamal and kamal claims he is not used to this (but he didnt say he is very well used to eeti and aruval), Nasar gives a message, yes yes dont get used to this.. (Message mariappan aayuttar, silai than vakkanum)
Kamal you have gained a name for yourself for attempting something new every movie. Be it constumes, look and you have been successful in every attempt you do. But when it comes to love making, bloody you have only one thing to show and that is to put it mildly is cheap acting. You think movies like HeyRam and VM has lot of nativity shows and it is foolish to imaging LtoL Kiss is native mode of love making. Why dont to attempt some thing better and spare poor helpless girls..
Hats of to Muthilingam. Thanks also to Kamal not using the likes of Snehan, vijay. The songs are really brings the essence of the village folk and particularly when the song used as climax song the lyrics suited very aptly for events.
Wrt to BGM, the scences look still and heavy because of lack of support from music. yes there are places where bits are excellent like initial love scenes but after marriage there is a big lull till the point of attack. it is not that suspense gets built up etc. kamal edits kombula poova suthi song, i feel Onna vida song should have been curtailed. Becase the bondage established very strongly when kamal says abirami saved his life and when she gives advise to ask for mannippu.
Kamal can proudly claim this movie as one of his best. But this movie doesn't have any weight to go for awards for best movie category. In Arts & Photography there is a very bright chance.

Sydney Kannan,
If you say Kalyaanaraman is a better (made) movie than Hey Ram, then I really have nothing to say to you. Our understanding of 'good cinema' is fundamentally different.
Let's agree to disagree.
I too hope Virumaandi is a success. Atleast we agree on somethings:-)

Ya IR is yuga purushan
Did Kamal pay IR enough?
They why is Virumandis music not as good as TM.
Why isn't Kamal contributing to Yuga purushans TIS project?
Kamal makes sure he gives good word of mouth honour to IR but sevalla?
Pathu paisa help kedayathu.

MNT - Hey Ram was boring...had big flaws in screenplay...and the treatment of the plot was not effective. Don't look at the plot or the packaging...see whether it delivers the desired end results...that is what makes a "GOOD" film. The list of films that I had up there as "GOOD" films met that criteria. Agreed...Kalyanaraman had a silly plot (and for that matter Sakalakalavallavan didn't even have one) but it was treated well...it was funny...it was'nt boring...I didn't go there expecting a "Classic"...I got what I wanted. Sorry....I don't belong to the group which beleives that a good film has to have "intellectually' stimulating content in it...or atleast pretend it has. I am not a pretender! I am not a "jolna Pai"!

kanna from sydney,
"boring" is a subjective term..what pleases you and occupies and engages your brain cells might not have the same effect for another person..movies, like food, are also about acquired taste..the kind of films you gett exposed to can define your tastes too. desired"end results"? again even a shakeela movie can get its"desired end result"...adhayum "GOOD" movie list'l serthukungalen!
well if you go not looking for a "classic" you might have good fun there too!:)
btw, australia dhane neenga..crocodile dundee sequel varushannu poai parunga..it would give you" desired results"

Thiru,
It looks like you are more worried about TIS than anybody else.
If you do not trust the project then why do you worry whether Kamal helps or Rajini helps or that "49 poor souls" contributes to the project or IR gets Pichai?

Kannan,
Your idea of a good film is one that provided wholesome entertainment and is technically excellent. I trusted that comment more when I saw you include "Dhool" in your Good Movies List! I do not understand what is the quality that you saw in Dhool.
And I am surprised Thenali or any of the Kamal's comedy flicks impressed you as in didn't entertain you. I agree that they did not have any purpose, but to group them as "boring" is possible only when you aren't interested in comedy and that is very much unlike me!

Mr.Kannan.
Define Entertainment? what could be very entertaining to u need not be as entertaining to me and vice versa. for me "anbe sivam" was damm entertaining and "dhool" was boring to me. and dont throw stones at me saying that im a hypocrite. dont come to conclusions so quickly and dont look at things from a very narrow frame.

C~P,
Don't you think Dhool and Sami were both well made "masala" films. I thought they were both well made. I fully enjoyed those two. Now let me tell you something...one of the major weaknesses Kamal had in my opinion....Kamal couldn't handle comedy...in the sense....he wasn't a natural say like...Rajni, Prabu or Satyaraj. But, he did a wonderful job in Sathleelawathi. Though he did a bit in MMKR...he was at ease in Sathi. I thought he along with Kovai was brilliant. This..."at ease" factor is very important when it comes to comedy...as that is when you get your timing right. Rajni, Prabu and Sathy are effortless and excellent in this aspect. Now....I would still rate Kamal in the second tier (when it comes to comedy) because he always seek the help of a "slang" when ever he does a comedy role...you can bet that it will be Aiyar bhashai, Madras tamil, Kovai tamil or Ceylon tamil. But..he is certainly above the likes of Vijayakanth. But, you can't blame Kamal for that. It is more to do with his personality...he is not cut out for that. You give a not so humorous dialogue to Rajni, Prabu or Sathy...when they deliver...it will sound funny. But, Kamal is more of a serious type...it doesn't come naturally. The same with roles that demand a bit of 'macho' looks or a "personality" like an inspector role or a King or Prince. He doesn't fit in. I don't know how many of you had followed in his early days and what sort of exposure you have to cinema...but...Kamal has had this problem with comedy from his early days. You take any of Kamal's old movies...when ever he has to do a comedy role...he switches to Madras bhashai...e.g. Sattam En Kayil, Ellam Inba Mayam...etc. Kamal has had this problem with old roles too. Those days when ever he does an old role...he changes his voice and seeks the help of extensive makeup or make overs. Take all his old movies where he had done old roles...from Sankarlal to Kadalmeengal to Oru Kaithiyin Diary and Ellam Inba Mayam...they will all look the exactly the same...with a big beared, spectacles and stuffed up voice. But...Nayagan was different...he did a great job...and was a brilliant performance. But, some of the credit...I guess...should go to Mani....because the old trend continued after Nayagan...where Kamal again didn't look natural...seeking extensive help from plastics (make ups) and makeovers....Indran Chandran, Indian and even to some extent in Anbe Sivam. Now compare this to some one like Rajni...whom most of you now a days only look at as a commercial actor and a super star...those days did a much better job. He was very much at ease and was a natural. Engeyo Ketta Kural, Netrikan, Nallavanuku Nallavan comes to my mind. It is a pity we lost a talented and different actor for the sake of having a super star. To a great extent....Sathy is very much at ease in such old roles too. He has been diastrous when ever he tried a historical role. For that matter none of the present actors will make it in that aspect.
Kamal is at ease...very comfortable and very natural in romantic roles. I have enjoyed many a movies and scenes where he plays a romantic role.
Now....coming back to your query...Kamal was brilliant in some scenes of that film...but overall...it was not up to the mark. I felt as if I was watching a 3rd grade, cheap comedy flick from Ramanarayanan or T B Gajendran.

kdot....
I have no problems with that. We are all different...and you don't have to tell me that. You will find some who thought even a big failure film like Hey Ram as a good one. I am not denying that...but we all know how many thought that Dhool was entertaining and how many thought that Anbe Sivam was entertaining!!!
Now...don't get me wrong my friend....I found Moonram Pirai..immensly entertaining...and was that a masala film? It was a great movie...it was well made...great screen play...brillian performances from the actors and technicians and more importantly...it was a neat film...delivered what it intended to....no doubt it ran so well.
Now...I am not narrow minded...friend...that is what I am asking most of you in this forum to be...why can't a you be open or broad minded...why do you think only the so called intellectuals can deliver "good' films...why do only the so called "classic" or "artsy" type movies are considered to be good. Even Kamal...I remember some time back (after Devar Magan I think) acknowledged that he had just learnt what is a good film. He accepted that there is no point in arguing that Guna and the likes are good films but the audience didn't understand it or not mature enough to appreciate it. He claimed that from there on he will only make "intelligent" films like Apoorva and Devar Magan. But, he went back to his old ways and burnt his fingers and learnt the lessons the hard way. I hope "Virumandi" is an "intelligent" film...because he badly needs a hit.
Now...I don't see you guys appreciating "Kadal Kondain"....the plot was similar...but the treatment was different. In my book, KK is a good film and Guna is not. Now, just because it came from an unassuming and non-intellectual like dhanush and Selvaragan and it didn't pretend to be an "A" class "classic", I can't ignore it. Kamal..himself accepted that...that is how he should have filmed Guna. I was fascinated by Pithamagan (even though there were some flaws) and Vikram & Surya's performances....but do you?!! I hope you do!
I can understand your frustration...those two movies have plots which are more serious and off-beat than some of Kamal's flops but they have succeded in the box-office big time but not the likes of "Guna". I do sincerely feel sorry for Kamal..because he puts in equal if not more into his movies. But..that is where the difference is....the treatment was different...they were simple...neat films...didn't pretend to be "classics" and were very "tamil" like without any foreign influence...and in my words "GOOD" films!
I rest my case!
