Who can be conferred as the Melody Queen of South Indian FIlm Music .
Is it S.Janaki or P.Susheela or Chitra or Vani Jayram..?
I think Janaki is the best of all and she should be conferred as the Melody Queen of South Indian Music

kumarr, considering the so called "negligible bad numbers" in case of PS, I cant think of any. Thought Chithra is also my fav. singer, there are many songs where her voice sounds screechy and out of pitch but PS seems so perfect (well, maybe age shows up in her voice now and she has gracefully retired too) but apart from that all the other songs are flawless to the core. Thatz really amazing!!
Infact many of the seemingly easy songs are tough like "Unnai ondru kaetpen", "Maalai pozhudhin", "Sonnadhu nee dhaanaa".

Ravi: I agree with you totally. Also, PS has demonstrated enough variety over theyears. Just a few ex. come to my mind.
Kanavane Kan Kanda Deivam: Anbil Malarnda, Unnai Kan Tedudhe; Padagotti: Ennai Edutthu, Azhagu Oru raagam. Sivanda Man: Oru raaja, Oru Naalile vs Sollavo Sugamana. Such contrasts in a single movie!

Welcome back Ravi to the thread.
Again, I am stressing, when it comes to variety, none can beat or surpass SJ. It is the fortune of TFM to have a multi-faceted singer like her.
Can there be a better example than "Mundhanai Mudichu", in the music of "Raga Devan" Illayaraja and also a hit film for Bhagiyaraj.
This is one of the films, where she has totally dominated the proceedings and the scene.
Totally, there are 6 songs in the film, I suppose, including the title song and with the exception of "Vaa Vaa Vaathiyarae Vaa" by SPS, SJ has done all the remaining 5 songs.
Total Domination and Wide variety.
I will list out the songs.
1. "Vilakku Vecha Nerathile..." (Very good Title Song with IR)
2. "Naan Pudikkum Maapilla Dhaan Naadarinja Mannavan Dhaan..." (Galatta Song)
3. "Andhi Varm Neram Vandhadhoru Raagam" (Romantic & Melodious) with SPB
4. "Kanna Therakkanum Saami Kayya Pudikkanum Saami" (Romantic & Horny)
5. "Chinnan Jiru Kiliyae; Sithira Poo Vizhiye" (Pathos and Melodious) That too SJ adds great value to this song with her opening voice. (Aariraari Ro oh....) Dramatic opening.
Take "Thendrale Ennai Thodu"
1. "Thendral Vandhu Ennai Thodum" with KJY (Classical & Melodious)
2. "Pudiya Poovidhu Poothadhu..." with SPB (Romantic and Melodious)
3. "Ennaanga Maapila Nalam Dhaana..."
Take "Udhaya Geetham"
1. "Paadu Nilaave.." (Melodious and Aekkam Podhindhadhu)
2. "Thene Thenpaandi Meene" (Melodious and Unarchimigu)
3. "Maane Thene Kattipudi..." (Jolly Song)
Take "Salangai Oli"
1. "Om Namashivaaya..." (Classical and Divine)
2. "Mounamaana Neram.." (Horny and Melodious)
Take "Dalapathi"
1. "Chinna Thaayaval..." (Unarchimigu)
2. "Sundari..." (Melodious and Aekkam Niraindhadhu")
3. "Putham Pudhu Poo Poothadho" (Classical, Melodious and Aanandha Raagam"
Take "Ejaman"
1. "Oru Naalum vunai Mara Vaadha..." (Classical and Melodious Duet)
2. "Nilave Mugam Kaatu..." (Melodious and "Arudhal Alikkum Song)
3. "Orakka Kathudhu Kozhi Thanni Erachu Kottudhu Vaali" (Altogether different from the rest and a very horny song)
Take "Thangamagan"
1. "Raathiriyil Poothirukkum Thaamarai Dhaan Penno" (Classical and Melodious)
2. "Poo Maalia Bodhai Aaanadhae" (Horny song)
Take "Mannan"
1. "Mannar Mannane Enakku Kappam Kattu Nee..." (Siging for an arrogant lady)
2. "Adikudhu Kuliru", the only and one song that the SuperStar sang in his own voice, I guess and that went with SJ.
I am wondering, where has she such a talent to sing that song "Adi Kudhu Kuliru" ? Her variations in that song, wow !
SJ, is one female playback singer, who had sung with both the leading actors in Tamil Film in her period.
With "Kamal" she has done many songs. But she can claim , that she has had an opportunity to sing with the "SuperStar" too.
Likewise, SJ has done many songs with IR (Duets)
But it should also be noted that SJ too has done a nice song with MD M.S. Viswanathan Sir
The song is "Sollathaan Ninaikiraen; Ullathaal Thudikkiraen";A very nice, melodious and classical duet with MSV Sir. MUST Hear.
SJ is such a talented and gifted singer, that she alone can provide variety. You are guaranteed of this, when you hear to her songs and singing.
No-wonder, SPB,KJY,Mano,Chitra,Swarnalatha or Minmini know what SJ is upto and thus rever her as their Role-Model and Inspiration.
"Yenge En Jeevane; Unnil Kandaennae; Ennai Dhandhene..." (Reminded of the classical and melodious Number by SJ with KJY in the film "Uyarndha Ullam")

Mr.kumarr, don't tell any lie to justify your blind s.janaki worship.Swarnalatha said about Lata as her rollmodel,S.P.B,Yesudas,mano,Sujatha,Etc..considering P.Sushaala as their rollmodel.I have strong proof to clear this. More over everybody in the filim music world know about it.S.Janaki,P.Susheela and Chithra are really god gifted singers.Every music lovers are really enjoying these great voices.please don't make any false sayings to praise your Idol and don't try to quote only a few years songs.

In the TFM Opening Page as well as the page where the "Threads" are listed, there is a box titled "Special Features" in which we have an item "An exclusive interview with SPB"
In that SPB has said the following
-----------------------------------
Balaji: Can you give us some instances where you felt your co-singer out did you in terms of improvisation, sangathis or brighas.
SPB: It has happened many times, not just once. No male singer has done that to me. And it was only Janakiji. She was a very very intelligent lady. nAnga reNdu pErum rehearsal paNNumbOthu oNNumE plan paNNa mAttOm. ovvoru take-lleyum oNNuNNu vandhuttE irukkum. And she knows when it is going to be the final take and she will give something.. naan innoru take paNNa mudiyaatha nelamaiyilE pOttuduvAnga. (Laughs) That is a wonderful spirit, actually. We love each other and we respect each other. The way she expresses herself is something extra-ordinary. May be age has caught up with her, but avanga romba anubavichu pAduvAnga.. romba.. romba.
-------------------------------------
See the above words; See the heaps of praise that SPB is loading on SPB, particularly the sentence
"No male singer has done that to me. And it was only Janakiji".
And this is not the first time, he is saying this and has said it in umpteen number of interviews and almost in every interview.
Also when SPB says like this, I am not surprised either. Only a true and fair Judgement.
This has become quite a regular phenomenon.
It has become a habit of SPB to speak about the greatness of his co-singer SJ in all his interviews.
Not even a single interview of him passes off without him touching on S. Janaki and her greatness.
I very well knew, before opening that page itself, that this interview too is not going to be an exception and that he would have spoken about SJ's greatness definitely.
When I went to that article, all I did was a search, giving "Janaki" as the text to search and I got many occurrences.
When a person like SPB is speaking about "Janaki" in every interview he is giving, imagine the impact, influence and impression that "Janaki" would have left on SPB.
That is a huge and big tribute, eventhough it might have come from her "Sishyan", but a "worthy" Sishyan
Mr. Karthik, I have not quoted only a few years songs, but a wide range.
If you are not satisfied with this range, I will quote more number of songs and a variety of songs in the days to come.
There are an enormous number of songs to her credit in her long stint and innings.
That is all for now, with a promise that more will come.

Chitra in many of her interviews has said that she grew listening to Suseelamma and Janakiamma Songs.
But, out of the two Janaki seems to have impacted her a lot and more than Suseela.
I will give two occasions for this.
1. In an interview to "Colombo Sarvadesa Varthaga Oliparappu", Chitra has said the following
a) "She has said that SJ is the one that she admires a lot and there is not any expression that she has not done and that for any expression to be sung in the future, we can always readily pull out a leaf out of her books (Dictionary)"
b) She also said that when Illayaraja began giving opportunities to her, she was given cassettes containing Janaki songs to listen, learn and grow and also with stern instructions that she should try to elevate herself gradually to the high standards of singing which Janaki has set. and
c) She has also said that, "Ooru Sanam Thoongiduchu" a song by SJ in "Mella Thirandhadhu Kadhavu" is one which she murmurs a lot and also one which ever stays in her lips.
Here it should be noted that, Chitra herself has done a good song "Kuzhaloodhum Kannanukku Kuyil Paadum Paatu Kaetkudhaa Koo Koo Koo Koo..." in that film.
and
2)Access the news in the below URL, where Chitra expresses her appreciation and admiration for SJ.

------------------------------------------
We can notice the following words in that article
"Ashaji and Janakiamma (S. Janaki) have been blessed by God. Age has made no difference to their voice quality."
One another example, I will quote below
It is another tribute to SJ's calibre and capacity.
The singer is "Srinivas".
In a computer-chat, a member poses the following question to Mr. Srinivas
-----------------------------------
"Guest6: What do u think of Janaki?
Srini: guest6, I hope you are referring to the great S Janaki?
Srini: She is incomparable."

SJ is "Paadagargal's Paadagi" too.

In spite of her great improvisation quality and all that, the final output Of SJ is not that great compared to PS. Talk about consistency in delivering quality output...(but then quality is a subjective thing!).. no one can near the heights of PS... I rever SJ too for many of her songs...but her's is not a musical voice!
Versatility is another subjective issue.
If you think singing club songs and sexy songs is versatile then LR Easwari comes to our minds. Ofcourse, I don't discount SJ's awesome rendition in "Nethu Raathiri Yamma"... one should also consider PS's "Indru Vanda Indha Mayakkam" for a change... but these are moods where PS' voice will not suit.. her voice is too divine for this. (Please understand, I am not elevating PS or degrading others here...it's just her voice that has this quality).
I consider being able to sing different styles of music as versatility. Be it a classical, semi-classical or a hindustani song, PS has never failed to do justice. SJ even though blessed with a very impressive voice range, does not meet the standards when it comes to beautifying a song.
Oru pattil ore oru chinna idathil PS nam manadhai kOLLai kondu viduvaar... she doesn't even need a full song to captivate one's heart...
