prabhudas, thrilled to hear about the event from you. IR still has the enthusiasm and feelings about the legacy he had when he came and he wants to contribute to. TVG is one of the few who has been guru to so many legends from most of India!!!! He is like a genius network protocol. Who can forget the stunning song Andhi Mazhai in which his vocal portion got the greatest recognition!!!! He did that in two other songs I can remember: in a very buoyant song "Ada Machamulla... Palavidha Sugam", etc...
Then, in the great unusual tune: Vizhiyile Mani Vizhiyile. Superb blend of Western and Hindustani classical.....
As I mentioned few times, even contemporary India has produced musical geniuses, who are without spiritual inclination would've been like any other indie or western pop band. Carnatic music is a deep rooted system with the inherent element for anyone to give it "practical application" meaning generate wondrous film songs!!!!!
If the West wants to produce mesmerizing compositions, they can do amazing things if they open up to Carnatic music, which we will soon see in the next decade, after Yoga, Carnatic music...... man. (Already CNN has the opening Carnatic sounds for the "Suze Orman" show. Imagine the show opening with a -prelude from a song like Poo Malarnthida or Ammadi Chinna Pappa or Pollatha Aasai Vandhu? THAT IS WHAT I CALL APPLICATIONS OF CARNATIC MUSIC AND SOON APPLICATIONS OF IR' MUSIC. That is another huge topic...

Prabhudas (and SK as well), thanks for the writeup and especially the mp3. IR should serve as a role model for us and all the younger generation. Whatever abilities we have, we are not going to be successful, until we work very hard, very very hard. I need to keep repeating this to myself :).
Looks like IR has an almost mathematical brain apart from the well known creative skills. Well..I guess music is an application of mathematics (as gyan would put it, he speaks my kinda language, must be a cs guy). IR also shows his quickness of perception, when he mentions 'I am not saying this, to get an applause' :) :) :).
He also clarified about the format. It is a good thing to be precise. I am pretty sure going by the kind of mind we are talking about, precision is again a facet of genius.
Thanks to you and SSSA for supporting IR in this project on our behalf.

An account of IR's visit to Raleigh,North Carolina

on: Tue Jun 1 03:26:43 EDT 2004
"I am still soaking in the memories of that visit but I want to re-iterate the one and only point that IIR is all seyt and WILL be going to Hungary on the 4th of July for recording"
Does that mean that he won't come to the Bay Area on July 11th?

on: Tue Jun 1 09:29:49 EDT 2004
Dear bb,
That's true. As the symphony orchestra have given the dates only recently, IIR has no choice other than taking it or delay the project to December[that's when the next dates are available]. But, the good news is the Bay area program is not cancelled but only postponed to August. Will update here as soon as the exact date is confirmed.
BTW, tomorrow is IIR's 61st b'day! Now that TiS is really happening, we request all IIR fans to send a small contribution as a b'day gift for this project. Thanks.
YIA!!

A symphony of Thiruvachagam
THIRUVACHAGAM, THE Tamil devotional literature noted for its poetic beauty, is waiting to be played in the famed music halls of the world, thanks to the symphony being composed by music director Illayaraaja.
The dream project of the music director, initiated a year ago, with an aim to enlightening the world about the cultural and spiritual ethos of south India is supported by Tamil Maiyam, which is dedicated to anthropological research and promoting arts and culture.
Gaspar Raj, founder-chairman of Tamil Maiyam and coordinator of the project, said "This is the first attempt to mediate the spirit of Indian music into Western standard classical notation format."
Mr. Raj, who is basically a Catholic priest, was drawn towards the rich nuances of Thiruvachagam and the underlying concept that God is universal. When the project was offered to him, he readily accepted to help it see the light of day. "We envision this to be a masterpiece as Thiruvachagam is not just a spiritual delight but also a civilisational paradigm."
This is a two-hour symphonic singing with 100 chorus singers joining in for the performance in English and Tamil. Stephen Schwartz, New York-based lyricist and composer will write the lyrics in English.
Mr. Illayaraaja has completed 60 per cent of the composing excerpts from Thiruvachagam and the project is scheduled to be completed in August.
However, the Rs. 1.50 crore project is being delayed, due to lack of funds, Mr. Raj said.
The proceeds from the sale will go to the Illayaraaja Trust for Traditional Arts and Culture for setting up an International College of Indian Music and taking up similar projects such as composing of Devaram and Tirukkural in symphony by Tamil Maiyam.
For contribution of the project, contact Tamil Maiyam at 25012634 or 55873355 or visit www.thiruvasakaminsymphony.com

I don't understand why the author had to bring ARR into the picture.
The whole write up looks ameturish.

The only thing I am not really thrilled about is that IR mentions that he is the lead singer amongst a group of 200 singers for TIS :-) Idhu thamizh cinemava Ramaraajanukku pathos song paada?
I hope most of it is chorus.

Oh no, not again!!! SSSA team, please don't mince words when you talk to IR that he and Bhavatharini should strictly be kept out of vocal department. As contributors, you all have the right to put your foot down. As if there is dearth of good singers!!!It is not too late

vijay,
I felt the same thing when I heard him say that he is going to be the lead singer. There are singers who have good pronunciation and will be suited for this project. I hope IR will change his mind.

But other singers , how about the pronunciation?
- From: e (@ 136.1.1.33)
on: Wed Jun 2 10:43:57 EDT 2004
I think it will be like the `vallamai thArAyO....' in nalladhOr veeNai seidhu in Bharathy...
Since he can emote better than most playback singers of today, that too with chorus / instrumental combo, it would probably be good...

vijay,
thanks for the link. Very interesting speech by IR. His knowledege in thiruvasakam stunned me. He seems to know them by heart.. who else deserves more than IR to do this project?
Anyways, like you all feel, I am not much thrilled to know that IR is the lead singer in this album either.... well, who is there to question him?
Let's all hope and pray that this turns out to be a big success!!
Long live Maestro!!
I will be going for the FETNA show in july 4th weekend in baltimore and I understand that IR will be there on that show, releasing this album. I can't wait to see him.

Dear CHO,
Pl. read our response to bb's querry in the same page yesterday. Since IIR will be in Hungary for the most part of June and July recording the symphony, his coming to US is uncertain, including the FeTNA. Will give out the exact details in a couple of days.
