hallo Haris,M.S., the song 'Maalai en vedhanai
koottudhadi.' from Sethu is set in chaste Sankara
bharanam. You can compare the scale of this song
with that of'April May -ila pasumaiye illai kanchu
pochuda'from Idhayam.( Sankarabharanam )
'Nee partha parvaikkoru nanri" from Heyram is set
in western scale (?Keeravani in Western scale).
you can compare this song with 'Oh Buttrfly, butter
fly, Yen siragaivirithai" sungby SPB in Meera
(a Vikram and Iswarya starrer!
Hallo Sindhuja, I will soon try to inform about the official Janyams of Lathangi.

MS.. may be u are right - with swars for 'enai vAttum'. somehow, ri appears in the aarohanam. and hence it cannot be kedharam. still i feel its DS minus 'dha'

Sorry. it has 'dha'. 'dha' appears in 'vEndAdha pEchukkal yEndA ambi'.
I think it is Sankarabaranam as SK told.

Silkfort, do you think 'Paarthen paarthen' is in hindolam ? I see 'M2' clearly in it frequently. Also, i don't see Dha anywhere. please correct me if am wrong. 'Ennulle enulle' sounds like Kapi to me, too.

Guys,
The following songs look like they fall in the same ragam to me. Can someone tell me the ragam?
1. Poovukul ollinthirukum from Jeans
2. Unnodu vazhatha from Amarkalam
3. Vaarayo thozhi from Jeans
4. Poove punnagai kaatu from Paarthen paarthen
Someone please enlighten me.

Rajesh,
All the songs you have mentioned have not been set to any particular raaga-all of them have a shankarabharanam base-that's what is common.
"Unnodu" from Amarkalam starts with hamsadhwani(a shankarabharanam janyam)but in the anupallavi , charanam the raaga changes-in fact even M2 has been used.

Hi Kannan,
Is 'Poovukul olinthirukum' really in Kapi ? I couldn't see the Kapi 'sayal' at all. As Sindhuja said, I see some Sankarabharanam base in it. It has the swaras 'N3 S R2 G3 M1 P D2'. I thought it could be Senchuruti.
Yes, the song 'Vaarayo thozhi' sounds similar to 'Oh mere sonare'. do you know its ragam ?

Naveen, this scale has M1, M2 and D3, N3 but rishabam (or ghandaram) is missing (assuming C is the base note). i doubt there's any raga with scale at all. If it does, it has to be a very rare raga. If you had 'e' instead of 'f', it is Rasikapriya.

Is there any link between the song "kaedaikkala kaedaikkala ponnu onnu kaedaikkala" from 'paarthaen rasithaen' and "kai valikkidhu kai valikkidhu maama" from 'kungumachhimiL'? Because when I sing the song "kaedaikkala..." at the end of pallavi (or anu-pallavi??) from the stretch in the last word "kaedaikkalaaaaaaa" i could easily go to "nee azhuthhamaana aaLu yen kazhuthharuppadhu yaenga".
since i don't know anything about classical music i am very much confused. are these two based on same raaga or is it my illusion??

what is the raaga for the song from veera, "malai koyil vaasalil kaarthigai deepam minnuthey"? I would also like to know the raaga for "kodiyiley malligai poo manakkuthey maaney" from kadalora kavithaigal.

Dr S.K,
The main beauty of kaapi is G1(in addition to G2)-And I don't hear G1 (at all in "poovukkul..."from Jeans-so I strongly feel it is not in kaapi--please comment.
And to my knowledge-as hyderabad brothers have sung a tillaana-pahadi is supposed to have both R1 and R2-but unnodu...(amarkalam)has only R2-so how can you call it pahadi?-please explain.

Naveen,
It's tough again because both f and f# are present. If only F is taken (assuming f# is an accidental), then it's varunapriya. If only F# is taken, it's neethimathi.
Can you point out some sample songs in this scale?
Dr. SK,
thanks for pointing out the pahAdi in 'suthi suthi vantheega'. Never realised it before..

RR,
most of the blues composition fit into this scale. I dont recollect any tamil song. I'll let you know if I come across any tamil song in this scale. The beauty of this scale is the adjacent semitones (F, F#, G) and (A#, B, C)
very romantic.

Naveen,
I think the blues scale you are talking about has an E, if the scale is C. The scale goes like C.Eb.E.F.G.Bb.B.C (7 notes). Some boogies have an F#, but I think it is a transition note. The reason why I think there is an E is, most of blues have a cycle of 7ths and added tension notes(like #9th, 11ths etc). For example, kaalam kaalamaga vaazhum - in punnagai mannan (in F) begins with F7(#9) - and then cycles between 7ths. And it has the third note in the scale - that is A. There is of course B too, but it is only a transition note from Bb to C. Let me know any particular song that you are talking about.
Can someone let me know what raaga is this scale based on?

Swamiji,
Check this. http://63.208.72.184/Scales/
I selected one of the 1st four blues scales (must be the 4th one). you may be right. I remember playing D note (in Bb Scale) in one of early blues composition. In the left hand I remember playing a quick turn (E, F, G) in Bb scale. So finally if you count the transition notes, all the 12 notes are played!
vennila vennila song from iruvar sounds like early blues style. It fits into the scale you have mentioned. (but D note is added if you are playing the song in F scale)

Cool stuff Naveen. Thanks for the link. I guess the page says (in Blues #3) that augmented 4th (that is F#) and natural 7th (that is B) are used as passing notes. I was wrong in my earlier scale in that I missed an A (so it is a D in F-Scale). By the way, a related question. I always through a raaga, or a scale contains no more than 7 notes. Is that true? or are there any raagas that have more than 8 notes?

on: Mon Dec 18 16:16:45 EST 2000
I don't know whether any raga can have more than 7 notes. Carnatic experts can answer this. But chromatic scale has 12 notes which is the super set of all scales & ragas.
Listen to 'Flight of the Bumblebee' piece. it is based on chromatic scale.
Naveen
