Lets write to the Chief Minister of TamilNadu and get reservation for Tamilians in the Tamil Film Industry. 50% of jobs (acting, post production, etc..) should go to Tamilians residing in the state. 20% of jobs should go to Tamilians who stay outside TamilNadu(If they like to come down to Madras for the work). That was we can ensure that the quality sucks. Thus we can succeed in getting Tamilians to watch other language movies.
In Karnataka they are doing the same thing, employing Kannada artists only, Not-allowing other language movies to be dubbed in Kannada, etc.. and see what happened to their film industry? even kannadigas are not watching Kannada movies even after 100% tax-free status!!!

Hey guys this is an interesting discussion. I have been in read only mode for quite sometime. But this is a subject I would like to talk about. First, I think the whole TN population is suffering from inferiority complex inspite of the successes in the tech/economic arena. We have lost our love for our language. The less one knows tamil, the more 'cool' is that person. The TFM songs are a very good indicator. We actively look and encourage singers who mispronounce tamil or have an 'anglicised' accent. The female singers sing with a husky voice and westernised 'crooning'. So clearly we have taken a fancy for western images, including voice and not to mention clothing.
On the other hand, we should also recognise that in Kerala they have a strong arts/cultural tradition, which churns out good singers/dancers. This is not the case in TN, classical music seems to be the domain of elite. So I second people's opinion here on encouraging classical music in tamil. This will go a long way in popularising it among the masses.
The need of the hour is more market driven educational institutions..(God..are those arts colleges still churning out BAs ?? BScs ?). These institutions should offer courses with specialisation in acting, music/dance, mass communication etc. I understand now there are quite a number of institutions offering sound engineering courses.

So, you think Bharathiraja will not star a Sen or a Rai in one of his 'pottal kaadu' movies huh Kupps?
Have you seen 'Dhaaj Mahaal'?
It stars a Sen and is shot in the same pottal kaadu. (need I say, she stickes out like a sore thumb.)
I think you have just helped prove Senthilar's point.
Why do you think we won't watch ARR tunes with Tamil actors?
Didn't you watch Kamal in Indiyan and Thenali? How about Prabhu in Duet? Heck, we even watched Mani Vannan in Sangamam
In any case, ARR only scores for 5 movies a year. If you want, you can cast Northies in those 5 movies. Leave the other 95 alone.
Senthilar's comments might not be in true 'Indian' spirit. But, his concern is why is it that only Tamilians are expected to have 'Indian' spirit.
I think he has a very valid point.

Moreover, we can also bring a rule stating, Rajnikanth being a non-tamilian cannot be a Superstar here and hence his fans should stop liking him and all his fan clubs be disbanded!!!
I don't know why we always attribute our problems to people from other state or to our heralded virtue of "virundhombal".IMO,the problem is more or less each individual's lack of competence or reaping rewards for his efforts.
Fliflo,
Abt your reference to Mulayam Singh Yadav,I think before 4 or 5 years we also changed our bank forms etc to Tamil. Thanks to K.Karunanidhi.At least some of my friends had problems with that at that time.
Abt Rajnikanth,
It still remains a debate whether the FEFSI workers demands were unwarranted and unjust or not.He also had his "Guru" in the opposite camp.
I'm not trying to justify Rajni's action.Being his fan,I'm just trying to do some damage control.
Abt Shankar,
I read the article too.It is a just a one line attention grabbing article which did not have any information or truth in it.

kiru,
"We actively look and encourage singers who mispronounce tamil or have an 'anglicised' accent. The female singers sing with a husky voice and westernised 'crooning'".
I want to consider two movies which had one song like that. But still the other songs were bigger hits tahn these.Take "Rhythm" and "Kaadhal Kavithai".One had "ayyo pathikichu" and other had "Thathom...".I heard people were requesting songs like kaatre,Dheem thananaaa or Vasammikka malargalai kandu, diana diana.
If we think these songs are appreciated by people going by the soundtrack sales information I think we may be wrong.I think we underestimate our people's taste.-)

I feel majority of tamil rasigan do not have segregation such as this guy is that region or he belongs to that language kind of attitude in their mind. That's the reason, why the top guys are accepted easily among public. Sort of "Virundhombal". I don't think the same thing happens in anywhere else in any part of the world. The brand "Tamilian" is more significant than any other type of brand.

'thamizhan first'
do u think 'Dhaaj Mahaal' is of 16-vayathinilae calibre?? anyhow i was talking about bharathiraajaa of those days who seldom compromise his story.
songs from duet were not 'hip movement' number. but i totally agree with ur point regd. kamal-thenali but there also we have the jothika factor.

the fact i want to stress is its WE(fans+creators) and OUR taste is like that. Why to blame others?
Also, we should not restrict like what Kannada Filmdom is doing. If we do so, imho, TF will ruin like KF and we will start doing all sorts of nonsense chauvinistic things like KF chauvinist do for Tamizh films and other language films.

Kupps:
Having a little worry why is it tamil film is like this? Why people are like this is not a chavunistic feeling? If we don't give little damn importance to this then we are going to be fools forever (like how we are now?). Why do you feel that having a little feeling towards language is chavunistic? Don't worry, tamil people are already branded as chavunists 'everywhere' without truly being like that? Tamil mella, mella Sagirathu...Cinema..Cinema (what cinema has contributed for regions development). I do see lot of nonsense movies inducing sexual arousement, inducing violence and a lot other. Movies like Indian come occasionally. But has the situation changed even 1% in reality?

fliflo your concerns are geniune. imo, the reason for degradation is not restricted to tamizhians alone, it has been our national(indian) phenomenon. when i said thodai (thigh) theriyanum sir.. i was not only blaming tamizhian it applies to all language people in india. since i was concerned about tamizh rasigans/creators i targeted only tamizhians. we could see lots of vulgar movies coming in telegu and we know about vulgar movements of karishma kapoor and govinda is hell a lot of hindi movies. these are examples of what i said as indian-phenomenon.
now my question is why tamizhian also fall prey to that? the answer to this, imho, is fear; fear of "if we won't endorse what others do then we will be branded as conservatives". this type we could still see when bombaites, delhiites, bangaloreans still say "even in conservative chennai....".
cinema is a field of art and skill (still i believe like that even after i know its a place of money laundering etc). that is why i feel we should not impose too much restriction in cinema field. in that perspective i said that "we should not do restrictions or else our TF (not our language Tamizh) will become a tent of chauvinist and will ruin like KF".
whereas we should cherish, should be proud of our language. i dont have any second opinion to this. my opinions expressed earlier were strictly restricted towards TF.

thoda theriyanum, alright, but it need not necessarily be tamizhachchi thodai, right? athuthaan matter. as long as you give what the rasigan wants, he cares a rat's a s s whether u are from tamilnadu or timbuktoo. of course, it helps if you can speak a little tamil.

Like Trend, I don't have a problem with the Rajanikanths and the SPBs who actually adopt thamizh and thamizh nadu, and become as fluent in Tamil as any Thamizhan has ever been.
It is the fly by kind of Tamils, like the Jyothikas and Udits, that I have a problem with. They (s)exploit thamizh nadu and thamizhar to the max for money. In the process, they do irrepairable damage to Thamizh and thamizhar.
I agree with Kupps. We only have ourselves to blame. No point pointing fingers at the 'aliens', when it is we, the green thamizhar, who made them demi-gods.
I cannot, however, agree with Kupps on the point that we need the fair skinned northies to gyrate to ARR tunes. Heera, Kasthuri, Ramya Krishnan, Meenadchi Seshatri, and Sridevi are all 'thamizhachihal'. Therefore our 'thodai' is second to none in India. And the myth that all Tamil women look like Kollangudi Karupaayee has no basis.
And, why is everyone concerned about cramping the style of TF by rejecting the aliens? Are we really producing such high caliber classics that we don't want to rock the boat?
....later
PS:
Kupps,
When I (thamizhan first) said that Bharathiraja cast a Sen in a pottal kaadu movie, I wasn't comparing the movies. I was comparing the characters. B. has previously cast Raththi Agnihortry in a similar role in 'puthiya vaarpuhal'. Therefore, I would not be surprised if B came out with another 16 vayathinile with Karishma Kapoor in the lead. This is exactly the point Senthilar and Fliflo are making.

Therefore our 'thodai' is second to none in India.
That is really a powerful blow. I donno they lack in what for not being repeatedly used in tamil movies.
