Shankar-Ehsan-Loy...maybe the only other MD with Bollywood roots also composing for TF....I was listening to their "Dil Chahta Hai"..except for the title track, all the other songs seem to meander around...but they are the only ones around in Bollywood who give a original techno touch to their music apart from ARR.
"Aalavandhaan" is their next big TF release...would like to hear your opinions on this trio.

Well, now I understand why the quality of musical energy has increased in the 90's.
I beg to differ and on't agree with you in this regard Anand. Consider mathematics for example. You can use MATHCAD to solve a tri-integral solving for a product of exponential function problem and still use the traditional paper & pencil method. As per research human brain can communicate weel when its thinking in a disciplined way. MATHCAd for sure will bring out the desired result. But what is "your" contribution, creativity involved and how much have you learnt? The basis of creativity is understanding the cardinal and quintessential facts of anyhthing. A disciplned way brings & adds a NON-CHAOS & ANTI-MAYHEM to the end result. Be it any human action, music, cooking, writing; electronic gadgets can aid in the process, like a electrical stove for cooking, or a synthesizer for music. But for heavens sake cannot replace the tradiitonal disciplned methods. The end result of using them (IMHO) is they make the gadgets smarter, leaving a little work to be done by your brain and hence your creativity.

swamiji, how the hell are you?, long time no posting...
if you train your ears to the point of hearing each note as you write, you don't need the sequencer. Just a pen and paper would do.
:)
yes yes take bank accounts it is just debit and credit, just a paper and pen will do keep track of things. Still we use tons of computer resources to do this task, infact our indian banks close in the afternoon to do this properly:).
Why ? imho
we use computers or sequencers to make our life easy. Also we get to freedom to choose a right sound while composing. there are many more...advantages.
Also
"it is easier to analyze harmony / form or just music itself if you write things down"
-- I dont think so, also this might depend on what music form you are into. why conductors often correct handwritten scores while playing the entire score. Cant the composer see it while composing ?
finally to end this gagas!...
IMO, Writing music in a paper does not make the work Superior!...at the end of the day it should sound good. Really no one cares whether you write or use sequencers or a scribe (person who writes score for you as you compose) I have few friends who train as scribes (yes there are courses here), however they cannot compose. It is a different ball game ,
Composing for indian movies is more complicated process...they need to make music for action kings and queens to dance or someother person to cry.
I like eashan to tell us what are the factors to be considered when doing music for an indian film. How it differs from other productions you have worked with.

hi ganesh,
as for hobbies, i have little time to indulge in them..whenever i do find the time i enjoy reading books or go on a long drive..but most of my day is spent besides working on music, household work, working out in the gym and spending time with my 7yr old daughter who takes most of my time. sometimes i do take time off to paint or sketch

I have few questions about Hindi Film music to you guys
Hindi film music had produced some great masteros who revolutionized music like OP Nayyar,RD Burman ,Naushaad who breathed new life and broke boundaries and I find after that it has become kind of stale or stereotyped very predictable music is it the north indian folks doesnt welcome change or few mds(i dont want to name them) are having a strong hold that they dont encourage newcomers or new ideas only exception from south is ARR who got all india recogntn.
If you take south new ideas, voices where always welcome be it MSV,IR,ARR and singers udit narayanan,to latest craze Sadana Sargam
(I firmly believe its not the people who few people in the industry)

Hi Ehsaan & Nandini,
FYI
Heres a review from THE HINDU of Aalavandhan -- Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy (Magnasound, Rs 50)....Pretty Encouraging... Congratulations!!
The music for the much-awaited Kamal Hassan starrer is finally here. And it marks the Tamil debut of the composer-trio Shankar- Ehsaan-Loy, who are still basking in the success of "Dil Chahta Hai". The music mirrors the theme of two brothers, of whom one is a psychopath. Side A has softer numbers while Side B seems devoted to the serial killer brother.
The album opens with the soft and melodious "Africa Kaattupuli" (Nandini and chorus) that blends African and Tamil folk. The title track (Shankar Mahadevan) is anthemic, racy and catchy{hellip} a style where rock meets Indian classical in a strange way.
"Kadavul Padhi" where Kamal Hassan showcases his singing talent, sounds more like the real theme song. With Kamal alternating between recitation and singing, the number almost has the feel of a Broadway musical at times. You get hooked on to it{hellip} after two listenings, though. Were the composers inspired by Brecht's and Weill's "Three Penny Opera"?
"Aalavandhan" is the kind of music that you can probably appreciate better after watching the film. -- Good.

thanks ram,
for posting the hindu review..
why is hindi film music the way it is?
good question..it's essentially the mind set of the film makers who are not willing to be experimental fearing losses at the box office..generally people up north prefer songs they can relate to in terms of similarities to their folk music and don't take very well to experimental music..it takes a new age director like farhan akhtar to do what he believes in and of course the fact that he has chosen the right set of guys to score music for dil chahta hai to bring in change..but again, the cosmopolitan crowd in the cities takes to stuff like this..and unfortunately i'm told that nearly 75% of mass sales happen in smaller towns in the north..so bollywood is essentially catering to that kind of a crowd for the megabucks..that is where the south indian crowd varies greatly from the north and most really good music directors in bombay are looking forward to doing south indian films
thanx

Interesting comments from Nandini.
No wonder Vishaal Bharadwaj did not make it big in Hindhi films though he had very good scores in Maachis, Hu Tu Tu, etc.

ehsaan,
//"Can you believe it we are the Md's and we havent been sent copies of the Tamil version. "//
what is the final product u deliver to the producers. Is it the recorded audio track on the movie reel!.
How does ur music manifest itself as a hard copy?
(like in a CD or audio reel etc)
Do you retain a copy of that hard copy for yourself?(or as back up)
In what system do u listen to the music that you compose?
