Has anybody heard of film songs in the ragams Sudhatharangini and Manji. What is the Arohanam and avarohanam of Kapi(I have 6 versions of it and want to know the right one).Is it based on Natabhairavi or Kharaharapriya.

Ramkumar: 1. Thendralil aadum koondalil kanden mazhai konda megham (Madhurai M.S. Pandian)- Suddha Saveri
2. Maanikka veenayai meettugiral kalaivani deivam (Parikshaikku Neramachhu) - This is in ABHERI - it's beautiful isn't it?
Hrishi: KAFI - This is based on Karaharapriya and takes the notes.....
S R G M P N S
S N D N P M G M D P G R S N S
I believe it takes 3 Anya Swarams....
There are so many versions and in compositions any variation of perhaps the 6 you have, will be used. It's the KAFI Saayal and paryogams that identify the Ragam in a song....
As for SudhaTharangini and Manji, I don't know of any film songs, Hari may be able to help us....I only know one Krithi in Manji, so it's a very rare Ragam, it's very much like Bairavhi, that too is not really used in new film songs....with the exception of....Adisaya ragam(Ragamalika MAHATI, BAIRAVHI).....and Thirupaal Kadalil....Both quite old anyway....

Geetha,
Thanks for the clarifications. Both the songs are real gems and it's long since I heard
them. Hope somebody makes it available on the net.

Vijay,
Geetha is not talking about "maanikka veenayendum maadevi kalaivaani". Yes, this is in mohanam.
Have you heard another susheela song in the same album "thaamarai poovil amarnthavale"? It's a superb song in Todi.
Any guesses on the composer?

Is it Subhapanthuvaraali by any chance. Before u guys start to pounce on me let me confess that Iam not very good at this but to an extent I get raagaas by similar sounding songs for which I already know the raaga name.

I'm not sure if you were answering me. I was asking who composed the two susheela songs "maanikka venayendhum" and "thaamarai poovil amarnthavale". It's not MSV.

BTW, VArAyO veNNilAvE seems to be in Karaharapriya scale. Or is it proper karaharapriya itself?

Hi ppl:
Great to see so many carnatic enthusiasts at action here. Anybody knows the MD and raga
for the song 'Oru murai vanthu paarayo'
from Manichitrathazhu? This movie is a malayalam
one but the song is tamil, I thought maybe someone might know it.
Thanks in advance for your response.

The song from Manichitrathazhu is in Kunthalavarali.I think the music director is Ravindran.

Hi,
Can anyone let me know what raga this song is based on? - "Om Namaha" from Idhayathai thirudadhe. This song by IR is simply mesmerizing.

Irfan: Om Namaha is in HAMSANADHAM
- From: Sankaran (@ webgate0.mot.com)
on: Thu Aug 6 03:46:29 EDT 1998
Manian and Ramamurthy,
Manichithrathaazhu is a wonderful movie made by Fazil in Malayalam. The movie had it's music scored by M.G.Radhakrishnan,elder brother of Malayalam playback singer M.G.Sreekumar(He has now sung in Dil Se).The movie had a classical base because the heroine(Shobana) was a dancer and the songs were all good.
Irfan,
Hamsanadham is a beautiful raga(apparently a favourite of IR) who has given such melodies like "Thendral vandhu ennai thodum" and "Sorgamae endraalum" based on it.

There is yet another beautiful song in Malaya marutham rendered by Susheela and TMS. It is " Vanakkam Palamurali Sonnaen Sabaiyinar Munney". The beauty of IR's composition namely "Kanmani Nee vara " is that it has almost no similarity with this song which came very priorly.
Can anybody please tell me on what ragas "Maalayil Yaro Manathodu Paesa" of Chatriyan and "Unnai Ethirparthaen" of Vanaja Girija based?
Two among the very good numbers of "His Highness Abdullah " are:
"Thu Badi Masha Allah"
"Natha Roobini"
Can anybody please lat me know the ragas of these two? I supposed thay are based on Kapi and Kaanada. But in the former Anya Swara Prayogam seems to be of a very high degree and in the latter the chittai swaras (I suppose the jargon is right) at the end of the songs come as
"G R S N D N D M G M M D D N N S"
In Kaanada as I heard in in the air the swarams are supposed to come as "G M R S" and not as "G R S"
Please clarify.

Murali,
vanakkam palamurai is in Abhogi.
Maalaiil yaaro is in Sudhdha Dhanyasi.
I havent heard unnai ethirpaarthen.
Thu badi maasha is in Gowrimanohari.
Natha roobini is in Kanada, alright. But I guess the g m r s sanchaaram doesnt apply for the kalpana swarams.

Thank you Mr.Ramaswamy for declaring the ragas of the songs which I had asked for. I would like to know if "Paattum Nanae Bhavamum Nanae" is in Gowri Manohari. I apologize for wrongly declaring that "Vanakkam" is in Malayamarutham. That was out of a mix up.

dai murali,
paatum naane is indeed in gowri manohari.
kaana varuvaaye from manathil uruthi vendum is also in the same raga.
bhoopalam isaikkum from thooral ninnu pochu
also sounds like gowrimanohari. someone clarify.

Murali Sankar,
Since you are intestested in malayalam films:
have you listened to "yaaramithaa vanamaalinaa" in Gaanam by BMK? Beautiful Gowri Manohari.

Murali Shankar: "Natha Roobini"
'Kaanada. But in the former Anya Swara Prayogam seems to be of a very high degree and in the latter the chittai swaras (I suppose the jargon is right) at the end of the songs come as
"G R S N D N D M G M M D D N N S"
From this swara structure, it reminds me of the Ragam ADANA(Not Atana of Carnatic Music), the Hindustani ragam, which sounds like Dharbari kanada, but is slightly different. I thought that SHIVASHANKARI by Seergaali G is in ADANA too.....
Please can we have HARI listen to the two songs(I've not heard the His Higness song) and clarify for us? Thanks in advance.....

on: Fri Aug 14 08:15:34 EDT 1998
Knowledgeable DFers please clarify : what are chittai swaras and what are kalpana swaras? AFAIK, chittai swaras are given by the composer and they are rendered without any change (like the swaras in 'thelisi rama') whereas kalpana swaras are left to the singer, and hence change from performance to performance. Are the swaras in nadha roobini chittai swaras, since they are same in both charanams?
I am listening to the song 'thaazhambu sEla' in S'pore radio (film : "soorya namaskaaram"!!!). Sounds like Abheri, if you ignore the interludes. Absolutely marvellous. I could have sworn this piece was by mottai, but surprise! surprise! the song is by Deva. Geetha, you have been clamouring for original pieces by Deva, I guess this might count as one such song :-)
Regards
G.Ramaswamy
P.S. My server is down. Otherwise I could have uploaded some songs from 'His highness abdullah'.
