bb: usually the 'track' would have been sung by a singer or the MD himself, instead of a on a keyboard (as in case of srikanth).
Even if the track voice is flat, the MD suggests/corrects those to add required brigaas and gamakams during the actual recording. But, people like SPB pretty much catch everthing including the slightest gamakam/briga given by the track-voice and improv on it, if required.

I wonder what SPB's comment was on hearing rajaG's voice;-)
SPB knows rajaG very well. In one of his (SPB's) concerts, he even asked raja to sing couple of songs including one of his favorite Telugu number. SPB appreciated raja's talents of singing in many languages (hindi, tamil, telugu, bengali, malayalam...) and gazals.

bb, it depends, i was able to play all the gamaakas /brigas i wanted in the keys, however often composers sing, gives nots,
I did have notes for the entire track written down in front, when spb sang i was following it.

Wonderful writeup, looking for more on this.
Man my jaws dropped reading about Bala Sir,wow
thats all I can no word coming out to desribe about him,boy you must have been in 7th heaven during the recording.
Its also show how much of a prof he is and yet very much approachable and humble.

Srikanth,
It was great reading your post about your experience with SPB. I got a feeling now I know him too :) About the album, I'd really like to hear the entire album and then comment like everyone else here. I'm sure you've learned a ton of new things from your this experience. Its really a challenge to do something of this scale and return the next day to your little cubicle in US!! You know..without "breaking free"
Keep it going.
Jay.

UV, here i go,
Srini has been a long time friend of mine. It was nice summer day in Pittsburgh, I called Srini in Chennai it was late night there, Srini at once encouraged me to go ahead and record the album, he will do what ever he can when I come to Chennai.
As promised Srini clearly introduced me to everyone, including Sujatha, SPB, Rajeev Menon , Srinithi Chidambaram. Etc.
When I recorded my first demo album in 1994, it was Srini who sang all the tracks. Producing a demo album was costly affair for me during that time. Srini sang all the tracks free. However later I moved to US, the you know all know how it went,
Srini is a down to earth person. He encourages everyone to do his or her best. He heard the track few times, Congratulated everyone who played the Veena and cello parts, he told me song was very fresh and original. He asked me sing, I was very nervous to sing, but he gave me enough confidence to sing in spite of the truth being I cannot sing. I managed to explain him the entire score by singing and using my keyboard track as backup.
Usually I use keyboards to explain. Srini told me that I sing better than many, I felt like working in my studio with my friends. Very smooth/friendly atmosphere; Srini also told the sound engineer to give his best support to make this album a success. Lawrence did a great job in recording and mixing. Amazing speed.
During recording he was very keen on lyrics and pronunciation, he clarified with me every line he sang. He completed the entire song in about 1.5 hrs, later told me mix it well. He was ready to do it again and again until I told ok! Made sure I was satisfied.
He use to call me to check the status of the project, followed it up in spite of his tight schedule, like he made a trips to London, Malaysia and other places etc.
Basically “Mahaakavi” would have been possible without his help, I owe him a lot!, I wish I could more albums with Srini in future.

srikanth: great to read your write up. i am trying to imagine how spd would introduce himself as "hello; i am bAlasubrahmaniam"? :-) periya kalATTA :-)))) you should have had a great time indeed.
i think you should try to release your first album too (with may be a little bit of working on mixing once again) - iravup pAdagan oruvan vandhAn(?) and iLangkAlai vELaiyil oru kAdhal rAgam (this is one of my all time favorite songs - konjam recording needs a bit improvement).

Looks like Srinivas is a cool person to hang out with :)
Now for another doubt(arvakoolardhan-sorry)/
You laid out all the tracks in pittsburg
the vocal was recorded and mixed again in chennai right ? except for Rajags song?

Uv no probs, yes vocals were recorded in chennai.
also i did another final mixing for tracks in chennai again, i need a another sound engieer opinion also. since I had taken all of them as separate tracks (protools) so it was quite easy.
Arul, nandriba, sure we (note it :) will do :)

guys
there is interesting audio clip of IR speech on music in kuwait, very interesting showing the mindset of this composer.
one of the highlight in that IR calling his own music as trash,"a cheap commerical commodity when compared to holy trinity(carnatic)or great legends like SDBurman,Roshan,Madanmohan,GRamanathan,KVM,MSV"
Also gave an interesting explanation about variation of the same 4swaras used by salilchowdary,Madanmohan,MSV in the different languages how much these great composers were able to bring such beautiful variation on these same 4 swaras.
And concluded that there is no such thing as "bad music or good music"
