I'm a new visitor to this website. I couldn't see anyone discussing about Vani Jayaram's songs.
Let me start this one.(It had been there previously pls. forgive me!)
"Ezhu swarangalukkul ethanai paadal..
Ithaya surangathul ethanai kelvi...
Vaazhum manitharukkul ethanai salanam.."
Wow! Beautiful voice!

I am sure it will be worth the wait (even if "patience" is not my middle name :-)). Take your time - for "they also serve those who stand and wait" (John Milton on his "blindness")
Poruppom. Pugazhvom. Nichchayam!
Thanks for the Anandha Bhairavi song. I will listen to it rightaway. (In the meanwhile check out O Priyathama if you haven't already. What an opening - and such bliss throughout!)

Thanks! The song did come to me after I posted here...Yes, that is the song I had in mind. Thanks for the confirmation. Professor also had another fine Mohd.Rafi solo (?): Aae Gulbadhan Aae Gulbadhan, Pho*lon Ki Mehak Kaanton Ki Chhuban.
VJs high note marvels are unmissable. But for a contrast (with the same brilliance) you might want to check out the telugu devotional: "Naamenu Pulakinchi, Ee Jenma Thariyinchi (?)" - such low notes and a song that moves like a gondola. Please pay attention to the section that begins "Srinivasuni..." - it's signature VJ.

Please give me a link to that devotional. Nonetheless, "aanathi neeyara" does seem to have some passages with low notes. And "telimanchu karigindi" does have one stanza where VJ really hits a very low note in the word "prabhu~~~~~~~~~~". When I had listened to this song for the first time, this particular word came as a delightful surprise as this glide towards the lower notes was totally unexpected in this simple song. It acts like a "beauty spot" of the song.

Naamenu Pulakinchi is available at www.vanijairam.com
Telugu section. Album: Gaana Manjari (while at it listen to the song "Sivakatha" as well. It is another ragamalika which VJ performs with aplomb.)

Naaz,
The MD for "Oh Priyathama" is M.Ranga Rao. Same person who composed "Raagake Swaravaagi"(Hrudaya Pallavi). The MDs for other Kannada songs are
Devara Gudi - Rajan-Nagendra
Sowbhagyalakshmi - S.P.Balasubramanyam
Shubamangala, Bili Hendthi - Vijayabhaskar
Daada - Vijay Anand
Saravanan,
Thanks for digging out the beautiful song "thamiz vEndhan". It must be 25 years since I heard it last time. R.Ramanujam composed the devotional album "Srikrishna Arul Paadalgal". Give those songs a listen if you have not already.

Thanks for the song links. The earthmusic hindi songs list was quite the revelation. It's interesting to note that a good percentage of the VJs songs in hindi were for south indian MDs. I also noticed a few hindi duets with P Suseela!

I'll have to work overtime this weekend to name these songs...But it is a challenge, and I will do my best!
When I logged on to the website yesterday I noticed that one memorable solo was missing:
Vazhndhaal Unnodu Vazhndhirupaen from Savitri.
Was this song ever listed in the solos section? Or has it been missed recently in the transfer to the new server? Please let me know.

Naaz,
I never had "vAzndhAl unnOdu" at the website. It is indeed a memorable solo. I have a poor quality recording on tape. I don't want to upload it like that.
In the movie "Savitiri", the heroine is married to an older man. This man was already an adult and carried the heroine in his arms when she was a child growing up. But due to poverty and family circumstances she is married to him. And she is trying very hard to accept her marriage to this man. The keyword is "trying". Because she is still struggling with her emotions and feelings due to this unmatched and unconsummated marriage.
VJ so skillfully expresses the disappointment of the heroine, only slightly, she does not overdo it, because the heroine is telling herself excuses to accept her fate. She quotes the example of Sita's vanavaasam along with Rama. She talks about how every human being's life is predestined. Then she says how her marriage makes her family happy (a shot at the society).
VJ throws in a frustrated and sarcastic laughter when she gets philosophical to tell herself that contentment and acceptance brings one happiness and that happiness comes from within.
idhuvE sugam enRu eNNivittAl pOdhum
adhuvE sugamAi vidum
inbamO thunbamO veLiyinil illai
idhayathil uruvAi vidum
The laughter follows the above lines.
Do not miss the micro vibrations at the end of the line
gangaiyil yamunaiyil pudhu veLLam varumpOdhu
kAdugaL sezikkinRana ........
and the short and swift aalaapanai at the end of the charanams.
The "Savitiri" heroine's situation is similar to that of the heroine who sings "ennuLLil enggO" in "Rosaappu Ravikkaikaari".
But the song situations are different. "ennuLLil engO" is when the heroine is struggling with her physical attraction for the other man in her life. She shows restraint "ponggi niRka thanggi niRka", but still enjoys the feeling "AnAl adhuvum Anandham".
"vAzndhAl unnOdu" is when the heroine is trying to accept her marriage making excuses to herself.
VJ clearly brings out the difference in the song situation in her performance. VJ expresses the yearning, lust and the secretive joy in her voice in the song "ennuLLil", but she expresses the disappointment, burying of the normal biological urges and frustration in "vAzhndhAl unnOdu".
Both songs executed with perfect feeling and expression and at the same time with technical mastery. What an incomparable artiste Vani is?
"ennuLLil engO" was written by Gangai Amaran and music composed by IR. "vAzndhAl unnOdu" was probably by Kannadasan (going by the choice of words and the puranic examples) and music composed by MSV.

Don't ask me why, but I always thought that the solo from Savitri was available at the website!! (Now I know it is all in my head :-)) I will have to search my old recordings to see if I have a better version of the song which I can send you...but I will have to check before I commit.
On the quiz: Blank Blank Blank Blank Blank :-(
(To be honest, this weekend was rather hectic - and I had little time to tease out these songs...)
Vazhndhaal and Ennulil Engo are two compositions with their own charm and identity. An interesting corollary to the first one is the song "Naan Padikkonde Iruppaen" (first version) from Sirai. The situation - matrimony and marital mismatches - also finds a trace in the respective films. Both characters allude to "Sahithyam" - and the empowering (or crippling) role-models for "wifely" conduct therein. While Savitri is resigned to her destiny of a may-december marriage, Sirai's heroine is content with her lot in life. Both women take their cues of "conduct" from the men in their life - Vanavasap Pakkaththunaigal. Dis/content or Destiny - or should that be Dis/Content in Destiny? The songs pose this question obliquely, like a recurring burn in the palm of your hand.
Ennulil Engo is a song about consummation deferred, surging lust pulled back from the brim, and a jouissance that taunts as it tempts and teases. The song is also unlike any other in the IR pantheon. From the elliptical opening which suggests the langour of urges, right down to the unmatched "taans" that pull the listener into a realm of simmering longings (the prolonged taans) and body heat - the song is a slow burning scorcher. Merging with the elements - Manjalai Poosiya Megangale, Margazhi Maadhadhaththu Kaalaigale Solaigale, En Mana Gangaiyil, Pongidum Poompunalil...the woman seeks to dissolve her physical cravings in nature's fecund display. The lyrics match the light and shade of desire with evocative images of clouds, flowers, groves and cataracts. Long after the song is over, the mood still lingers - the memory of coition, the residual nuance of orgasmic release, the frame of dishevelled dalliance and sated splendour.
Wouldn't it be gross insolence to add to Kannadasan's words about VJ? Just three words from the poet of poets about the magic and power of her voice: Adhan Sugame Alaadhi!
Request: Saravanan - at your convenience - could you PLEASE transliterate the full write-up by KD about VJ from Sandhiththaen Sindhiththaen? My copy of the memoir is too far away, somewhere in an attic or tagara petti in Madras...It would be something that can also be added to the website.

Ada! Neel D- you have so many hidden talents--Great write up! Hope you continue writing.
Naaz- your description of 'Ennil ullil engo' makes excellent reading too, as usual!
Neel- its unfair to keep me away from the quiz.
( Though I was secretly relieved since I could identify only two ;-)
Anyway, since its two days now, I think, I can go ahead and give my two findings (Hope they are correct):
3. Kattikkarumbae Kanna
5. Yaaro yaaro yaarodu yaaro
Innum konjam clues, thalaiva!
