Let me start this one.(It had been there previously pls. forgive me!)
"Ezhu swarangalukkul ethanai paadal..
Ithaya surangathul ethanai kelvi...
Vaazhum manitharukkul ethanai salanam.."
Wow! Beautiful voice!

I was addressing the "sentiment" in order, and without empahsis. How can one be indifferent to good grace? I am just glad that the flashback worked for you too (It did for me - you might have noticed from the flight above.)
Not that I am averse to pats. But they aren't the reason I am here, or why I post the things I do.
To punch an old phrase into contemporary daylight: It's the thought that counts.
In every sense of that dictum.

Now, why would you say such a thing? :-)

In the collection of Kannada songs by Vani Jayaram (solos and duets) that I have, there wasn't one song that I found to be ordinary or average. It seems to me as though VJ sang only the best compositions is Kannada, regardless who the music director was. Of course, the best of the best were from Vijayabhaskar, but the other MDs are not very far behind in giving VJ their best songs. Even in those disco numbers from Daada, the songs do not leave me with a feeling that anything is missing. Always a feeling of completion and a feeling of having listened to a good song is what I am left with whenever I listen to any Kannada song by VJ. Is it the composition, or is it VJ, or is it the combination of the song and the singer that created such perfect songs? You be the judge. Whenever you come across a Kannada song by VJ make sure you sit down and listen to it.
It would be unfair if I did not mention that I feel the same way about VJ's Malayalam songs too, but I only have a very few of her Malayalam songs in my collection and cannot declare already.
While VJ's award winning songs may have been from Telugu, Tamil and Hindi, I can comfortably say that VJ simply shines in all her Kannada songs.
Listen to the latest addition "devare nudida". A scale set specially for VJ. See how VJ pours her heart into those words when she goes "prema... prema..." at the end of the charanams.

Why am I feeling so happy today? Its not just the thought of VJ's Kannada songs, I am sure, though they are something to celebrate :-)))

Susi makes a cautious, now you see her now you don't sort of return, and quick on heels of that glimmer Neel D posts in this thread after a long long time! Welcome and please stay to both of you! :-)
I have not heard many of VJs Kannada's songs (only those at the site) but so far they have all been fine examples of collaboration and expertise. Ragake Swaravagi was a rare one. And "Devare Mudida" is superbly executed. Kanasulu Ninne, Happiest Moment, Raga Jeevana Raga, O Priyatama, Besuge Besuge Jeevanadhella Sundara Besuge...all linger to this day. Talking of scale, I have not idea when Devare Nudida was recorded or released, but the same clarity, control and mastery of VJ can be seen in the duet with Hemanth in Neela - Yedhaiyagayakathari. Even the solo Chandamama song from the same film is a good melody.

hi friends
I am VJ fan. Have any one heard her mEgamE mEgamE song from palaivana cholai? I cannot say how much nice that song is. But simply VJ is great! I heard her telugu songs from Sankarabaranam and Swatikiranam. Great ! Great ! I will be in a higher energy level when I hear VJ's songs. If anyone interested in VJ can mail me.

Neel D -
Thanks for the classic "O Priyathama" from Kavirathna Kalidasa. Beautiful, hummable song. VJs expressions - aasai, mogam, viragam, oodal - all subtly conveyed with just whispered words and soft stressed syllables. The first part of the song is a good contrast to the second part after Dr. Rajkumar's entry.
It is a classic moment - and I am grateful for your efforts in bringing this song to all of us!

Do you know who the lyricist and MD are for O Priyathama? I was struck by the similarity ( tamizh duet in Sadhanai "Enge Naan Kaanbaen En Kadhalan" Both these songs are "search" specific - looking for the belowed, yearning for her/his presence, pining for a glimpse, possessed by only one face and thought - day and night - in body and soul.
There is also a similar song in the film Professor (*ing Shammi Kapoor, Kalpana) but I am not able to recall the opening bars...does anybody else know this song I have in mind?
With my "trans" linguistic (learning one language by using words of another? ) I was able to "approximate" most of the Kannada lyrics of O Priyathama. Just a bit of keen listening and how the song and the words (most) fall into place...Another feature of knowing at least two south indian languages...it opens doors to many others!

Naaz: Konja naal poru thalaiava- will write the next chapter of 1978 soon.
Meanwhile, click on this link (Hope it works)- I've uploaded a rare VJ song:
http://f2.pg.briefcase.yahoo.com/bc/sarsong/vwp2?.tok=bcfsn_RBwPvaUvsO&.dir=/&.dnm=thamizh.mp3&.src=bc
In case you're wondering about it, let me refresh your memory. It is from the film Ananda Bhairavi-1978. Music : R Ramanujam.
I'll reproduce what I wrote about this song earlier in the chronology:
Sri Vidya's "Ananda Bhairavi" starred Ravichandran, K.R.Vijaya, Jayadevi and S.Varalakshmi. I have not seen the film, so no clue about the proceedings.
Rangasami Ramanujam is the younger brother of Rangasami Parthasarathy (of Oriental Records fame). Before settling in the U.S. and embarking on a flourishing business in marketing music, Parthasarathy had composed memorable music for films like "Magadhalanaattu Mary", "Kalyana Mandapam", "Avan Piththana", "Paalmanam" and "Kalyana Oorvalam".
Ramanujam was born the last of five children and grew in a household where music was loved and nurtured. Unfortunately, he could not be as successful as his illustrious brother. "Ananda Bhairavi" was his first film, and he gave a brilliant account of himself. His next film was Annapparavai(1980). Annapparavai had that spellbinding SPB solo "Ponnenbatho poovenbatho". MV's "Gopala yen sir" became an instant hit. SJ's "Aadi padhinettu" was another catchy number.
Ramanujam's next film was the M.G.C.Sukumar-Vanithasri starrer "Aval Oru Kavariman", which doesn't seem to have been released. The film had some good songs like "Pallavi naan paada"(VJ) and "Poonthendral kaatraaga poonjolai vandaaga"(PS, Jolly Abraham?). Another stillborn film for which Ramanujam wasted his efforts was "Puththampudhunayagan". I have heard that in the aftermath of MGR's demise, Ramanujam brought out a cassette on the Puratchi Thalaivar, which did brisk business.

continuing:
All the songs in "Ananda Bhairavi" are truly memorable. "Umaiyavaley Mariyamma" in the great S.Varalakshmi's brigha-laden tenor is an aural treat. And while "Sirithaai andha sirippil oru mogam" is an alltime favorite SPB-PS delight, "Kodi kodi ennam adhu kondu vandha sondham" is a breezy TMS-PS duet.
Let us look at this classical song by Vani:
Thamizh vendhan Pandiyanin angam
en thalaivanin thirumeni thangam
Pagaivargal munbu avan singam
Ennai paarthu vittaal kaadhal pongum
Ammamma
Devar kadal kadaintha amudham
Avan thirumaarbil naan malarum kumudham
Moovar vaditha thamizh padhigam
Andha mohanan thandha sugam adhigam
Ammamma
Raathiri pookalukku raja
En ragasiya thottam kanda roja
Saathira Geethai sonna Kannan
Ennai thazhuvugaiyil kaadhal mannan
Ammamma
Ennadi naanam endru anaippan
Naan ethum sonnaal medhuvaai sirippaan
Thannanthanimaiyiley azhaippan
Nalla samsaram pola enni nadappaan
Ammamma
Aalilai megalaigal aada
Ponarasilai nadagangal kooda
Naalu gunangaliley naan vaada
Adi nayagiyey endravan naada
Ammamma
A Bharathanatiyam song, drenched in Sringara Rasa, beautified with exquisite lyrics. Isn't that enough for Vani to simply scintillate?! Ramanujam must have envisaged this song in an inspired moment, the Ragamalika that he has so imaginatively created is full of surprises at every turn. And the loving way Vani arranges the trellis of the sancharas in the raga essays of Shanmugapriya and Sahana around the lyrics (Raathiri pookalukku raja and ennadi naanamendru anaipaan respectively) is something to cherish.
The song reverberates throughout to the Mirudangam and the anklets. The Venu and the Veenai herald the arrival of the Vani, and she makes a majestic entry. Listen to that bashful pride in "Ennai paarthuvittaal kaadhal pongum Ammamma". There are so many untold delicious secrets in Vani's whispered "Andha mohanan thandha sugam adhigam". Pray, hark at her prolonged "raja" and "roja". Who wouldn't be entranced? Ramanujam gives such an enticing bit on the flute after "saathira Geethai sonna Kannan" that we catch a fleeting glimpse of that divine flautist Himself. The laugh that Vani gives in "naan ethum sonnaal medhuvaai sirippaan" is filled with amused recollections of the lover's banter, while the alaap after "Naalu gunangaliley naan vaada" is another nostalgic moment.
It is when I listen to bejeweled classics like this that I regret my ignorance of classical music. I feel frustrated that I am not able to wholly appreciate the nuances and subtleties of Vani's song and consequently unable to do any justice to its review. It is a gratifying thought, however, that it has never occurred to this veteran of dignified sangita sampradaya to indulge in the cheap or the meretricious just to attract the laity. But then she doesn't need to. She is able to put across the real thing so tunefully that it earns her the respect of the Pandits and the awe-filled admiration of the paamarans (like me!)

=============================================
Probably, "awaaz deke humein tum bulaao mohabbat mein itnaa na hamko sataao"? It's similar in mood to "oh priyatama" and is from the film "professor".
Speaking of Kannada songs, Vani's "Bhaavavemba Hoovu AraLi" from Upaasane is a true jewel. I especially like it for the sheer robustness and volume of VJs voice at the highest notes. I think the MD is Vijayabhaskar again.
