I'm a new visitor to this website. I couldn't see anyone discussing about Vani Jayaram's songs.
Let me start this one.(It had been there previously pls. forgive me!)
"Ezhu swarangalukkul ethanai paadal..
Ithaya surangathul ethanai kelvi...
Vaazhum manitharukkul ethanai salanam.."
Wow! Beautiful voice!

Digression
I refrained from adding in my previous post that I am known in my family circle as Agila Ulaga VKR Rasigar Manra thalaivar!( My love for the man was such.) . VKR could mouth dialogues loaded with sexual innuendo which you could laugh without squirming. That was something remarkable. From Or Iravu to arangetra vellai & beyond he was simply charming. One of my wild dreams was to make a docu on VKR. That will remain a dream. May be one day I'll make a doc on the art of off spinning with no not SV but EAS Prasanna. and another on my manasiga patti DKP.
Hmm if aunts had whiskers!

Saravanan,
I have not many tidbits to add to your present instalment of writeups.
One doesn't know the commercial understanding between brothers! But in Komal Swaminathan's autobiography 'paRanthu pOna pakkangaL' (Chapter: Karl Marx- um kaakapusuNdarum!), he mentions the name of VKR's elder brother (I forgot the name!)as the producer of two films in which Komal contributed:
1. Selvam (Komal was an assistant director to KSG) and 2. Ponnaana Vaazhvu (a Jaishankar film which had the story by Komal).
Selvam had a storyline of an astrologer fudging horoscopes for some consideration. When the story was narrated to him, VKR's brother had a hearty laugh as he is (was??) a person who never moved an inch without his astrologer's consent!! VKR's brother introduced Komal to astrology, to which he remained addicted for a while before forcing himself rid of that habit!

C V- Thanks for those tidbits!
In the same series of memoirs in Kalki, VKR did mention his brother - he said that it was due to an unnecessary argument between his brother and APN, that they had to dissolve their partnership.

PART 1
There was this album, an amazing one (still is) which permeated the tamil consciousness, within the state and without, and resonated with all the piety of a temple bell in the many corners of dravidam. What made it a phenomenon (albeit a minor one) was that it had nothing to do with cinema. Yes, it was composed by a matchless musician, and sung by artistes who have launched many a song into our hearts...but it was neither run-around-the-trees nor run-of-the-mill.
Sri Krishna Gaanam by MSV is to tamizh devotional what Pataudi is to cricket. It is a legend in and outside of its time.
My alma mater was an easy addict to this album. We had this tradition of full-blast bhakti before the morning assembly. You could hear TMS's "Pulanguzhal Thandha Moongilgaley" drawing you in right the moment you stepped off the bus and walked the dusty road to the school's gate. S. Janaki's surprise at the milk laden cows of Gokulam was never short of awe, and we entered the bovine free prayer hall with visions of "Gokulaththin Pasukkallellam Gopalan Peyarai Kaettu Naalu Padi Paal Karakkudhu Ramayi..."
Following this divine lactose-calcium hit to the system, we were lulled (not a good start to the day by any medical estimate) into a flute heaven when SPB caressed us with a dream of Aayarpadi Maaligais and gentle flotillas of Thalelos.
God, they say, works in mysterious ways. That's the only way I can explain why after all this pampering of pullanguzhals from bus-stand to desk-top, the first hour of the day was Math and Trig.
Or Lull and Lynch.
Where's the justice in that, when one was involuntarily lost in the algebra and allegories of transcendence?
Go figure (sic).
Now, if you've heard this album (which, if you haven't, is inexcusable) you'll agree that most of the songs are about the childhood shenanigans of Krishna - precocious, charming, huggable and innocent. The songs chart an emotional geography of motherly love, communal celebrations and humane existence - a god child among people. A cause celebre. What's to censor? Nothing, you'd think.
But you weren't the principal of my school.
A decade and a half later - a revelation and a re-examination. How school indeed!
A few days ago a song made its way to the VJ website. The credits said "Sri Krisha Gaanam" by MSV. This song never touch the metal lips of my school's loud-speakers!
Too risque. And we were not a school for scandal. We liked the child krishna, the sleepy krishna, the artiste krishna, the flutist krishna...
But, the lady-killer krishna, the krishna in casanova clothing, the krishna love-machine...
I can see Mrs. ----------------- the principal hushing with breathless exasperation (she was fair complexioned, and I'm sure her cheeks would have "rouged"): "It's too much, you know!"
No sensuality please, we're south indian south asians? Maybe.
We were for Nalla Krishna. Not Lollu Krishna.

PART 2
And the song - the censored song - is a smouldering number alright:
"Kannan Avan Surulkoondhal, Kaarmegak Kootamadi, Vannamugam Minnaladi, Vattavizhi Saraladi..."
VJ soars in this newly discovered jewel. Langour and Lust, And a Longing that's Just...unlongable.
The song shakes the glow from under the ashes, kindles and touches, flares and fleets...The lyrics - descriptive of the beloved sexual yearning, all explored through images of lips and hair and flute and stare...and the virahini come alive in the unquenched and rising "Krishna, Hariiii..."
Enough to put the ushnam back in krishnam.
In the middle of this game of arousal and consummation deffered, there is a line that describes flute touching the lord's red red lips...and VJ drops this minefield of whispered sex: "En meni silirththadhadi..." Rain drops on exposed skin, the state of a woman undone.
Mrs. --------------, knew all about it then.
And now that I am all grown up, I do too.

typos galore:
"Pullanguzhal Koduththa Moongilgaley"
"and the virahini comes alive"
"this song never touched..."
"descriptive of the beloved's..."
there must be others :-)

Naaz, It is pullankuzhal kodutha moongilgalle of course thantha has the same meaning but kaviyarasar sollai matralaamo? My favourite is SPB's Ayar paadi maaligayil. It is intoxicating to say the least.
The album was released one gokulasthami. the deadline for recording was getting nearer &n no songs from KK . MSV was getting anxious & asked about it. So it is rumoured that KK wrote all eight songs in asingle night session!
Truly a great collection.
Similarly I like the Deivam album by K vaithyanathan . It is a masterpiece I am tempted to say Inspite of KV( I still feel he was the single main reason for Raja Raja chozhan's debacle!)
Both the albums are great listening even for an agnost like me!

Vengayam, Kaumudi -
Thanks for the rejoinders and the encouragement (respectively.) It was a surprise to discover, after these many years, that the VJ song was adroitly censored by my school's principal. If not for the website, I would have been totally unaware of this VJ number in the album. It is the only song in the entire album which explores Sringaram/Viragham. A simple, yet sensitively essayed song.
VJs devotional songs have not been discussed or analysed at length here. It is devotional singing which is more and more appealing to me - for language, ethos and a certain "traditionality" of singing/rendition. I found the telugu album Gaanamanjari to be beautiful, and all the VJ songs for Raghunath Seth are superb (esp. O Ri O Bansuri, and Daras Ki Tho Bela Bhayi are the creme de la divine creme.)
I'd hit the encore button for such songs and such singing no matter what the language. I mean, what can one really say about a song like "Boom Boom Shakala Shakala..." except that it is everything a tamizh song ought not to be? :-)

Has there been any tamil song with the lyrics "oom Boom Shakalaka...." or are you referring to Shakalaka Baby, Naaz? :)
Boom Boom Shakalaka was the ad jingle when Hero/BSA SLR launched Street Cat Bicycle!!
Maybe it too was an ARR jingle.

Prabhu -
I am told by some reliable sources that there is this tamizh song which goes "Boom, Boom" (no bust, no echo) and the whole of TN is grooving to it these days. I've checked it out, and I didn't (and still don't) get any of the words - except the Boom Boom. Now if you ask me about a tamizh song that I really got the first time I heard it, with the same tamizh words, that would have to be "Boom Boom Boom Mattukaran Theruvil Vandhandi..."
About that other "Baby" hit - Is Shakalaka a "mod" form of Sahikalai? :-)

Prabhu -
Now all is clear (including my conscience)! My initial shakala shakala should have been shakakan shakakan... (pavam Chaka Khan, what did she do to deserve such tamizh-pop immortality?)
And mixing those phrases pushed me this >< close to blasphemy!
Prabhu-ve - Please find it in your heart to forgive and forget! :-)

naaz,
the rejoinder only means I agree with other things you wrote and after all I don't think you need any encouragement ;-) Be as it may Krishna ganam is also an album I cherish so I was in the ammam sami mode as i read thro your post. your principal's effort reminds me of Irving Wallace's account of expunging phrases from The Bible for obscenity( R Document??)
But who doesn't like a pat in the back so here comes great work kiddo!

Shakalaka and Sahikale both have same number of syllables...would make apt replacements :)
