Hi all,
I just surfed thro' the net and happened to see the profile of PS. She was heralded as the "Lata Mangeshkar" of TFM. Does she deserve that crown more than SJ and Chithra?

Has Sujatha not got a national award even once? Can somebody clarify ?
When I listened to the song "Oru patte naan ketten",I got a wonderful feeling about the melody and the way it was sung. The song really looked like one which deserves an award. I heard sujatha singing that song in a program called SARIGAMA in Asianet anchored by M.G.Sreekumar. Was it Sujatha who sang that song originally in the film?

Speaking discouragingly of Bhavatharini getting a national award only shows you all guys' narrow mindedness...she has definitely satisfied the jury if not anyone else...so why the big hoopla against it? If you think about it, even Janaki getting a national award for "Inji iduppazhagi" is not fully deserving...infact, Kamalahasan has sung better than her in that song...

karthi: dhideernu vandhu don't try to put a guilt factor into our minds regarding our views on this topic. IMO National Awards should be deserving to a performer or a performance, preferably both. As an example, SJ's inji iduppazhaga may be an ordinary song, compared to the other fantastic renditions by SJ (before and after). It also might not be the best female song for that year. However, one chooses to ignore this fact, considering SJ's other achievements. In the ideal situation, you may not want this but atleast the candidate has other deserving performances. But, Bavadharini? C'mon gimme a break. Maybe you have a soft corner for her, because she reminds you of P.Susheela of yester years, but engaLukku appdi thONaliyE:-)

rAjAG,
Maybe you have a soft corner for her, because she reminds you of P.Susheela of yester years
AnAlum, nInga PSai ivvaLavu mattam thatta kUdAthu:-) In an interview, bhavA mentioned her favourite female singer as PS. Maybe, that is the reason why kArthi is defending her;-)

Whether it deserves a national award or not is upto the jury. I still wonder what was so great about last year's male singer's performance, the Malayalam song. I personally would have given the award to Anuradha for Karupputhan. I don't know if karupputhaan was even nominated. But Bhavadharini did give a good performance with Mayil pOla. She had powerful delivery, decent uccarippu, azuththam and thiruththam which Sujata very very rarely has and Chitra rarely has.

on: Mon Apr 9 22:39:44 EDT 2001
I said that out of a general kindness for someone who has won an award. I still maintain what I have said. It's not at all good to discourage someone like this.
And rajaG, I don't understand what you are trying to say! "In the ideal situation, you may not want this but atleast the candidate has other deserving performances" - neenga solradha paarthaa, oru singer 1 paattu asingamaa paadi, 9 paattu nalla paadiyirundha, andha oru paattukku award thandhaa OK pOlarukkE? That is not the point here at all. Award song jury-ku pidichu pOchu - avLOdhaan. And Bhava was lucky to get it. And I'm yet to hear that song to pass a comment on it. Even if I don't like it, I will never ridicule an artist like you all do. That is the point.
Enakku National Award kidaichaa...ungaLukku maal vettarEn rajaG, OK-yaa? SL, unakkum konjam tharrEn pOnap pOgudhunnu!

I think PS is without any query could be
adjuded as the Uncrowned queen of south
indian playback singing.
that is why she is respected than any other in
the field
susheela is one only tradefront singer in female
side who enthralled all front and given life to
the songs of the celebrated heroines of the south
india film industry.

IF PS's Voice is suitable for few situtaions how she can be in field for 50 yrs & How MD's Called her to sing all situations..
While janaki clicked only in 70's!!
SO PS IS THE ONLY QUEEN OF SFM..

Not exactly 50 years ok
PS Dominated Tamil field only for about 20 years(60's & 70's).See Now also Janaki singing for big MD's like Rahman ok. You should accept this. Janaki is the QUEEN of SOUTH INDIAN PLAYBACK

I know to read/write/speak all southindian languages and no one other than S JANAKI is perfect in rendition. Chithra is the only one who can come some what near her. SPB is bad in Malayalam, KJY not so good other than malayalam, Vani Jayaram and Susheela are not at all good in malayalam even though they has sung too many songs

AND COUNT FOR THE SONGS OTHER THAN PS
THAT ITSELF WILL SHOW THAT SHE WAS FOR THE
PERIOD OF GOOD TALENTED ACTRESSES AND
SJ WAS FOR SILK SMITHA AND OTHER VAMP CHARACETER
IN A VERY SHAMELESS MANNER.
PS ALSO SANG FOR ALL BUT NOT COMPROMISING IN
TASTEFUL RENDITION

see the years doesnt make difference in singing.
when ps has sung nearly 40000 songs usage is more
but sj with almost same no of years as experience
had completed only 15000 which is less than chitra
and mano number.
so numerically she should and can sing for another
10 years atleast to cover 25000 as numbers.
please dont quantify and qualify ps songs with
because at any point of time ps had more hits
and more awards and more memorable solos than
anyother singers in tamil and telugu.
see in kannada she sung little and most memorable
songs in kannada are within that little

do u know how many songs Asha Bonsle Sung
it is just 10000 songs
Still Janaki gives hits

In my opinion, Chithra is top among all other South Indian female play back singers. From the very beginning of her music carrer, she got the national award in Tamil movie, Sindhu Bhairavi. Altogether she got 5 national awards including one in Hindi. She is the one and only one singer (both in male and female) who won all the 4 South Indian State film awards. These awards she got so many times in which in Malayalam, she got 13 times state award. More over her voice is so melodious that nobody will bore and that will continue atleast for 2 decades more.

The most beautiest, sweet, heart touching voice I ever come across in the music world is one and only Chitra. She sung in all the south Indian languages and ofcouse in hindi also. The most important aspect in her songs is she pronounces the words of any language in a very sweet manner.
She feels the song.

THE GREATEST FOUNDATIONS IN INDIAN FILM PLAYBACK WAS SET BY THE MANGESHKAR SISTERS..FROM THE 1940'S. ALL INDIA WENT THROUGH THE NEW REVOLUTION SET BY THE SISTERS.P. SUSHEELA MIMICKED LATAJI AND LR EASWARI WAS THE ASHA OF THE SOUTH..S.JANAKI WAS BOTH THE LATA AND ASHA OF KANADA AND MALAYALAM PLAYBACK..SOMETIMES ALSO SANG IN TELUGU AND TAMIL FILMS..NEARLY ALL HER SONGS WERE HITS. SHE HAS SUNG SONGS THAT PS AND LRE WERE DEEMED UNSUITED. AS TAMIL AND TELUGU LANGUAGES WERE HARSHER AND THE ACTRESSES WERE BULKY AND AT TIMES HEAVY WEIGHTS PS AND LRE SUITED BETTER. PS REIGNED FROM 1962 TO 1970. 70'S SAW SJ REAPPERING AND MSV WAS PROMOTING VJ AND LRE AND SO WAS KVM. AT THIS POINT PS WAS CONTRACTED LESS. MID 70'S SAW SJ BEING SHOT UP TO THE TOP BY IRAJA. SJ DOMINATED FROM MID 70'S TO THE EARLY 90'S.
ITS A RECORD THAT SJ HAD SUNG FOR MORE ACTRESSES THAN ANYONE ELSE.
SJ HAD THE GREATNESS OF LATAJI AND ASHAJI ROLLED INTO ONE.
PS WAS GREAT BUT HER RANGE WAS CERTAINLY LIMITED. HER PLUS POINT WAS THE RENDITION OF SAD SONGS. THERE HAS BEEN NO VAMP GREATER THAN LRE IN THE SOUTH. LRE HAS ALSO SUNG SOME GREAT SONGS DEPICTING OTHER EMOTIONS.
CHITRA IM SAD TO SAY DOES NOT QUALIFY IN THIS GROUP OF GREAT SINGERS.
IN CONCLUSION: S.JANAKI IS THE GREATEST OF THE SOUTH INDIAN FEMALE SINGERS.
