Hi all,
I just surfed thro' the net and happened to see the profile of PS. She was heralded as the "Lata Mangeshkar" of TFM. Does she deserve that crown more than SJ and Chithra?

>> And as far as carnatic numbers are concerned, she (Chitra) does perform better than her predecessors. <<
Overstatement. Aruvi, have you not listened to Apoorva Raagangal? Twenty six years of listening to those songs and I still can't get enough of them. I am talking about VJ's songs.

But unquestionably, I believe that she is very good. Even eclipsing both in some issues. As far as the matter of sweet voice is concerned, we are all going to have our individual opinion depending on taste. Mine is definitely not biased. I do believe that Chithra has the best voice. And as far as carnatic numbers are concerned, she does perform better than her predecessors.
Neels,
The people in discussion on my post were SJ/PS and Chithra in light to these two people. I did not venture to include anyone else in because as you might obviously be aware, that noone else really considers anyone besides SJ/PS. I had only stated in the end that I think Swarnalatha also has talent which simply is not being used. But to make a point of where I stand in TFM:
The female that has sung the best songs in TFM in regards to maximum numbers:
P.Susheela
The female that is most versatile in singing:
S.Janaki
The female with the voice that Aruvi adores the most:
K.S.Chithra
The female who has sung Aruvi's favourite song in TFM:
Vani Jayaram
Yes I have listened to Ezhu Swarangalukkul.

For those who try to term SJ simply as a benificiary of IR's bias and nothing more, some major hits under competitors' batons during the peak years of IR:
sippi irukkudhu, kavidhai aRangERum -MSV
adi ammAdi -SG
mookkuththipoomElE -GA
panneeril nanaindha pookkaL mella -LP
and many more...
These are proof enough that though SJ got a big boost with the advent of IR, she didn't need his backing all the time for reigning supreme, IMHO!

Dear readers,
Chitra,sj,ps are really great. But please dont forget VANI JAIRAM. I just heard 'Ezhu swarangalukkul'. Its great!! How many people here know that Vani Jairam has had an album with Bhimsen Joshi, with Raghunath Seth (Hindustani flautist). She has worked with Ravi Shankar for the film 'Meera' and for a few albums. Moreover she has worked for albums with Kathak Maestro Birju Maharaj. I dont know how long the list.
Though I feel she should not be compard to Asha or Lata, she is a real real fabulous singer!!!
Her voice is as sweet as it is strong.
I have heard many of her Tamil/TElugu songs though I understand neither. Take sankarabharanam for example. She has even sung a duet with the famous classical vocalist 'Kumar Gandharava' in a
Marathi film. (She sounded as good as he, according to me)

Let me give a boost to this thread again by giving
a slogan, since I feel Chithra is the Best!
"Melody's
Ultimate
Solution
Is
Chithra."
See the left vertical line where the word Music is created.(Aruvi, will you join hands with me in this slogan?)
Please do not get irritated in the formation of this slogan .This is just to make the discussion interesting! Can some participants come up with some interesting slogans like this using similar musical words, like Ragam, Thalam, Rhythm, cinema etc? Just a game of words to represent your favourite artist. Or you can also use initials or names to make a reflecting sentence : SPBS(S.P.Balasubramaniam) stands for
"Singing
Perfecly
But is the
Simplest"

Here goes:
What do yo feel about Bhavatharani getting the national award?
The national award is a very big award and only with god's grace can you get it. I think that Bhavatharini is very lucky to get it. She got it for singing the song without imitating anyone else.
I frankly believe that Sujatha is the one who is long overdue for a national award. My feelings about Bhava getting it is known to everyone:-)). Whatever anyone says, it seems absolutely ridiculous. Besides a couple of songs, which include 'Mayil pola', I don't think that she has sung anything well, while Sujatha was pretty great in almost all the songs she sang.
- From: aruvi (@ 209.148.138.143)
on: Fri Apr 6 15:14:52 EDT 2001
The exact translation.
What do you think about Bhavatharini getting the NA?
One getting that award is only through God's grace. She is very lucky. Getting an award saying you are the best singer in all of India is not a small thing.(I beg to differ about this opinion. I believe the NA is a recognition at India level but one can't make it as a basis for best talent. Everyone is good on individual basis). It's a big deal. Bhavatharini has her own voice. She does not imitate anyone. One should say that this award is a victory(vetri) for that.

Is Swarnalatha not the youngest person to recieve a National Award. I heard that she was only 20 when she recieved it. Bhava is 22+.
