Hi all,
I just surfed thro' the net and happened to see the profile of PS. She was heralded as the "Lata Mangeshkar" of TFM. Does she deserve that crown more than SJ and Chithra?

Aruvi,
Nice to see that you are back again with your enthusiasm. The postings appear to be the result of a well thought analysis.(it rather appeared as one tending to be like a thesis).Well done, Aruvi!
I support you in the truth and nothing but the truth that Chithra is the BEST.

Aruvi, just a point for you to note...
The names you have mentioned as competitors of Chitra were mostly non-existent during her entry. I have never heard of Devi. S P Shailaja and Uma RamaNan (you missed her) were almost non-existent. Jency was just out of the scene. We never heard of Sujatha after "kaalai paniyil" until "Roja"! So, the only competitor to Chitra was Janaki. And Chitra made it because of her sweet and young voice, which tfm needed anyway at that time! I am not saying Chitra's entry was easy or tough. I am just correcting some of your quoted facts.
As for Suseela, she had competitors like Leela, Jikki, Jamuna Rani, A P KOmaLa, and later on Janaki...but none of them had the voice that she had. So, even her rise to fame was kind of "not that difficult".
If there was someone who really survived the tides of competition and stood the bad times, then I would say it's Janaki! During her first phase, she did only a handful of numbers in her first 20 years - here she showed remarkable patience. When she was on the rise after IR's entry, we had so many (then)fresh voices like Jency, Sujatha, S P Shailaja, Uma RamaNan and ofcourse, Vaani Jeyaram and Suseela! Still, Janaki survived because of her sheer talent. In this she is just unmatched!

S.JANAKI survived because of IR patronage..Even in those twenty years of exile from TFM,she was only second to MADHURI in malayalam and second to B.K.Sumithra in Kannadam..IR wanted his songs to be known for his tunes and not for singers voice....This EGO of his provided way for SJ'S another 10 year period...From 1985 IR's priority was Chitra and since then SJ had to take back seat..Also from 1977to 1990 Telugu films were produced in high numbers, say 140,150 films ayear PS was totally busy there taking higher fees there

Hello to everyone. And thanks for the welcome:-))
Karthi,
Isn't that the point. Chithra herself was a newcomer but only made it through hits. Wasn't she the same competition to Janaki as were the others. I don't think that IR was promoting Chithra, he just used her because she was becoming popular. He himself stated about how he had tried to give songs to Jency but she didn't come into the limelight. It was on Hindu paper I think. Once a person becomes popular, MD's have to use them. IR ignored Hariharan till 1997, although HH was around for so long. It was only HH's popularity that made IR use him. But I admit that it was IR behind Chithra's popularity in tamil because he did give her the break in 'poove poochudava' and 'SinduBhairavi'.
Sometimes, it feels like I am repeating the same stuff over and over:-))). People must be real tired of this thread by now.

From Manisekarans posting in TSBhagavathy thread
Soon she went on a tour singing for the Tamil Isai Iyakkam. In viruthunagar she(TSBHagavathy) was awarded the title
of "Isaikkuyil" in the presence of Ramasamy Nadar.
Now we know who the real Isaikuyil is :)

Mr FNA,I am really surprised and getting laughter to see your postings about SJ and B.K.Sumitra.
From your comments about SJ and BKS , I would like to bring the following for your kind information.
BKS is one of the most popular folk singers in Karnataka. She has also sung about 30 Kannada film songs.
It is does not make sense to compare BKS with SJ who has sung more than 5000 songs in kannada (not kannadam) .
SJ has ruled Kannada Film Music for more than 40 years. So SJ is queen forever.

FNA, Madhuri was never a leading lady singer in Malayalam. She sang off-key most of the time and it was her "proximity" to the composer Devarajan that made a few songs come her way.

Meera Krishnan,
NEE...SJ in Nattuponnu Meera Muralikrishnan..ah??
I remember BKS and Vani Jayaram were ahead of SJ in KFM for sometime....For your information SJ was busy in KANNADA from 1962 TO 1985 and in these years around 600 Kannada films were only releaded and SJ might have sung 1500 songs maximum in kannada...Summa 5000 innu BURUDA vidadhee...
ENNDA SL
From 1968 to 1973 Devarajan composed maximum number of songs for Malayalam films and Madhuri was singing most of his songs...
1977 to 1985 IR was giving SJ same importance Madhuri was getting from Devarajan.
APPO ,TFM layum...PROXIMITY irundhadho???

My name is Meera Krishna(not Krinshnan). I am Kannada speaking girl. I don’t have any relationship with SJ.
I have followed kannada film music from my child hood and I know about kannada songs very well.
Both SJ & PS were singing Kannada film songs in late 50s and 60s. In 70s PS numbers came down.
Since then SJ dominated.
Vanijayaram made her debut in KFM only in 1974. How can she be ahead of SJ. Of course the only competitor for SJ was VJ. But VJ could not get as many chances as SJ got during that period.
BKS is a famous Folk artist and she is our family friend too. And I know detail about her achievements. The Numbers I gave are accurate.
Neither VJ or BKS were never ahead of SJ in KFM.
SJ has sung lot of kannada songs under G.K.Venkatesh’s Music Direction (my favorite) ,at that time IR was assistant to GKV since then he admired her voice and when he start directing on his own he chose her for most of his songs(like MSV opted for PS).
I have most of the kannada songs sung by PS ,SJ and VJ. I love all the songs. I have lisen to most of the SJ songs in other languages. I know about PS achievements in KFM , but I am very much interested in knowing PS achievements in Tamil Film music. I would appreciate if any one can share the information or provide pointers.
Regards
Meera

TRUTH as Shiva's Grandfather...ungaLukku vayasaanadhaana marandhu pochunnu ninaikkiraen...
Konjum salangai-nnu oru padam vandhadhae gnabagam irukkaa?? andhula singara vaelanae dhaeva appidinu oru paattu varum adhu SJ paduna paattu.
TRUTH as Shiva's father..every body has their own taste. if SJ's voice is Kadhavu kitte Sikkina ELI madhiri keechu voice then Vani Jayaraam's voice is like mill siren kathhal voice. Don't consider only voice, SJ has given different types of songs more than vaanijayaraam and sure vaanijayaram is a better classical singer than SJ (sometimes equalling Lata). but imho, vaani jayaraam's voice is not as fit as PS/SJ in TFM. i cud give an example in Nithyasree as modern vaanijayaram, in TFM.
Finally, TRUTH as shiva, if u r fan of IR think about why he chose SJ for most of his duets
but, isai kuyil includes voice, bhaavam, versatality and other features, which, imho, PS stands first next comes SJ (all in IMHO, no offence meant)
