I have a number of questions of different subjects. Some of them may seem weird, but anyway, I think its worth a try:
1. Have any of you noticed raagams in unusual non-musical situations? like what raagam do babies cry in? What raagam is that funny horn sound that autorickshaws have?
2. I asked a friend of mine who can play guitar whether he could play any tamil film songs. He said he could not think of any. Can anyone give me a list of such songs that can be played on the guitar?
3. I read somewhere that Nithyashree has sung a song called "Desingu raja". When I heard the song I couldn't believe my ears-- it was so incredibly bad. Has she really sung that song? I don't know which movie it is from.
Thanks a lot. I appreciate your help.

Amritha,
Ur question is intersting....
but I haven't heard babies cry in same sruthi, when there is no sruthi, thjere isn't a question of a raaga at all,
abt hornsound....
they produce only one note....a combination of notes is a raaga ,hopethat helped,

Amritha,
I agreely mostly with Ram, but i possess an oldish tape, where the singer sings in a particular raaga, and using a very interesting mix of sangadis, the impression is that of a child crying. It is interesting, I was reading once about how our scriptures explain the origin of the seven notes. For example 'Ga' orginates from the bleat of a goat. 'Ri' from a cow's call to the calf, 'Ni' from the trumpet of the elephant etc.
I know it doesn't answer ur question, but thought you might find it interesting. Music attempts to replicate/convey the impression of nature and beauty thereby enticing the listener to drift into 'feeling' ...
Babies may not cry in a raaga, but the cry can be very 'non-cacaphonic' if replicated within the structure of a raaga.

Mandu,
I have tried to talk maintaining a sruthi,
but although it sounds intersting,it sounds very odd and often I end up singing rather than talking.may be u can try it urself,
we can set swaras or ragas for emotions,
and form a new way of communication

i have tried that a couple of times, didn't exactly work out. But I do think that sometimes it almost worked out to sounding nice, when there was maybe a certain percussion in the background to take care of the spaces left in between the words, or if breathing technique were perfect enough. Maybe, maybe. I have often tried to figure out if my dog, when he barks, has any sense of rhythm, sadly, till now i really haven't figured that one yet.
IR_Fan, despite thy wishes, I have a feeling the CAT walked off in a huff! :-( Am seeking consolation in the fact that almost the entire world seems to having the same problem with that damn furry feline creature.

Amritha,
to answer ur question about playing tamil songs on the guitar. I don't see a problem if your friend is a LEAD guitarist. A big problem is that guitar is a very simple instrument which cannot produce microtones, (unlike say the sitar which also has frets but can produce wonderful microtones). Microtones add a distint flavour to indian music. If your friend can play Lead on the guitar, you could try Kanne Kalaimaane, Poove Sempoove, Yamunai Aatrile etc. Look for songs with a simple melody and ask him to work out the lead in it. Also, if he still has trouble, he should take a look at the finger technique of a Sarod Player, it would give him a good idea of how to handle the guitar during the more intricate pieces or interludes. Or if he's still stuck, then a look at the technique of Al Di Meola or John McLaughlin.

mandu :-))A big problem is that guitar is a very simple instrument which cannot produce microtones, wrong. guitar - for that matter any stringed instrument - can produce wonderful microtones. the point is that the guitar construction is based on the tempered tuning (like the piano) and hence it is (on the surface) unsuitable for anything other than the (skrued up) western musical system. the beauty of instruments like guitar is that since the difference between between the tempered tuning and natural tuning is magnitudinally very small, good musicians - prasanna, u.shrinivas, ... - can make these instruments play any style of music.

*hiding under blanket* .. ~hihi~... my id was created with my ignorance in mind! I have heard some wonderful playing around with the guitar though, one of my friends is a guitarist, but he just didn't feel satisfied with the way he rendered classical raagas, so he tried learning the sarod, his technique improved brilliantly.
I guess I was referring more so to the inability of the usual finger technique to produce the right microtones. Am a great fan of Paco DeLucia and Al DiMeola, who are amazingly brilliant when it comes to cajoling the guitar into producing notes and microtones that most ppl can't.
but self is maha-ignoramous. thanks for the correction!

SS: yes, i too feel some shades of Anandha bhairavi in that song, especially in the female track (manasu ethayo..)
Mandu: no one seems to help me get that nice sahana number, including the newtfmpage songbot !
Or, can anyone tell me more sahana numbers in tfm ? i have somehow started liking this raaga alot recently.
