each raagam has a specific meaning...for example there are soga raagam and santhosha raagam and much more...can anyone tell me the meaning for the raagam sahana and in which situation this is sung for? I depend upon your answer in naming my first new born...I just love this name and my husbund says he wants to know the meaning for the raagam and then he will decide to pick this name or not...please give me a positive answer so that I could select this lovely name.

Renuga: Sahaanaa is a wonderful raagam. very pleasing indeed. To me that raagam shows : karuNai, kuzhaivu, irakkam, anbu.

It might have been derived from the sanskrit word 'sahana' which means,

"Patient, Enduring and at the same time Strong & Powerful !!"

Renuga:
Sahana is a wonderful raga. there are several pleasing songs in this: chittam irangagadenayya, giripai etc. in film music in avvai shanmugi there is one sahana, dont remember song. for technical expl. of this raga see: http://www.sangeetham.com/raganubhava/sahana.htm

Vidyasagar, he is a good MD, id ont think he is great like IR. "Malarae Mounama" from the film karna is a wonderful work by vidyasagar.

Vasanthi:A single note difference in mohanam changes the whold dimension of the raga.
This happens when the sharp note -- dha (g#) is added instead the natural (A)
Idho mega orevalam,kadalin deepam ondru are some the vasanthi numbers.

What about "Nallarvakellam satchigal rendu"(from Thyagam)? The charanams of this song sound like Vasanthi. Could you confirm?

Sorry Saketh, did not see your response for long.

Vasanthi is "s r2 g2 p d1 s" differs from mohanam in "d" only.

As far as I know there are only mixtures of vasanthi, shivaranajani and mohanam in tfm.

(1) paadi azaiththEn by KJY - a mix of all three

(2) adhO mEga oorvalam - mohanam + vasanthi

(3) ezisai geethamE enakkoru by kjy - a mix of all three

"Nallavarkellam" and "anbu nadamaadum kalaikkoodame" use a lot of Vasanthi notes in the charaNams. Interestingly, both songs have M1 and N2 peeping in at times.

I think 'paadi azhaithen','ezhisai geethame' are misra sivaranjani.
'atho mega oorvalam' (also 'anbu nadamaadum') are vaasanthi. The way IR blends vaasanthi and hamsadhwani in 'adho mega oorvalam' is wonderful. Did you notice this?
