Hi all,
I just surfed thro' the net and happened to see the profile of PS. She was heralded as the "Lata Mangeshkar" of TFM. Does she deserve that crown more than SJ and Chithra?

Equating PS with SL - Well GOD save TFM.
The "Extra" thing which is present only in SJ as everybody claims is also there in PS songs(Many songs can be listed...), only difference being is in SJ's case this "Extra" is explicit(Her Mukkals, Munagals are so explicit adding a "extra" effect) whereas it is very very subtle in PS Songs. People can never notice this, because most of the time she mesmerizes with her beautiful voice, we forget the other good things
IMHO, PS songs are like Slow Poison(Please forgive me for equating like this) - Initial Effect may not be there, but finally when it makes an impact.........
Again IMHO, KSC songs are like peppermint.Sweet,nice.. Effect will be there for sometimes and after that you need another one to sustain the sweetness.
So as it is asked, where we are headed in this discussion, and what is the conclusion
In a subjective topic like this, people who have more time to access the net will win.

Yes that is one of the less appealing facet of SJ's singing, IMO too :-)
Vijay:
Do you remember SPB's laugh in Pattu Kannam Thottu Kolla ? SJ has done it in another song, from Guru I think ! I shall confirm it tomorrow. Little things like this add a new dimension to a song rather than just enhance its existing value :-)

Srinath & vijay!
SPB & SJ are inimitable `laughter' specialists in TFM...miles ahead of anyone else...so natural & so nice...
Both MSV & Raja relished in making use of this often, to great effects (end piece of `indha minminikku' comes to mind...)
PS & KSC laughing in the beginning, end or middle of a song? mmhooomm..

The order is
PS
SJ

Nobody can level the emulating performance of NSK in a sirippu ... song in which he traverses through a medley of archetypical laughing. But, laughing can not be an element of comparison between PS and SJ since PS belong to a genre when Tamil Film believed in a notion pombaLA sirichchA poachchu . The noticeable thing in that kAkki chattai song when SPB laughs is that PS remains nimble wit without any giggly gestures even in her subdued rendering.

PS has done a very poor job in that song. Perhaps that is why IR didn't use her a lot. Her style of singing does not go well with SPB's, whereas the SPB-SJ combo is a match made in some weird duet-heaven :-) And since SPB was miles ahead of any singer on planet earth (when it came to singing in TFM :-)) IR probably chose SJ to sing along with him. Coming back to Pattu Kannam, yes, I agree that PS' voice sounds very sweet and is note-perfect - but she lacks something that SJ would have added to that song. PS' rendition is very mechanical in that particular song.

Hi All!
Listen to the songs sung by PS and SJ and one need not decide. PS alsways emerges the winner."Kaalathai vendravan nee.." (in Adimai Penn) the continuous humming and "Naan oru Ponoviyam kandaen..".(PS,SJ & SPB).
"ISAI ARASI ENNAALUM NEEYAE, UNAKKU ORU INNAI AAGUMAA.." (Thaai Moogambikai). Music by IR and rendition by PS, SJ & S Rajeswari.

Srinath:
"Pattu Kannam" is one old long forgotten song, and I wonder why you chose that song to label PS as "mechanical" or "lacking something extra" etc!
I can quote a lot of songs like these where SJ would make us feel the same way or even worse!
Rajaji:
In one of your postings you say "there's no song of PS which cannot be sung by KSC or vice versa". True. But the discussion here is not who can or cannot sing a certain song. It's only a question of who does a better job. If SJ were given the no's given to PS she would have sung them too. In the same way, if MV(Malaysia) were given the songs sung by SPB, he would have sung them too! But, as you see it doesn't work that way!

Karthi illama oru PS discussion nadakkuma ? :-) Welcome back saar ! BTW, I mentioned Pattu Kannam purely for SPB's laughter. Rameshb thaan PS nalla paadirukkaangannu sonnaar ! I responded only to his statement :-) and I also mentioned "in that particular song" So I wasn't labeling PS, podhuma ? :-))) And Karthi, don't substitute PS vs SJ with SPB vs MV !!! PS sings nothing like SPB :-) Duet na eppadi irukanumunnu therinjukka you can listen to any SPB-SJ song :-)

Is your last sentence a joke? Or are you trying to be serious. I admit that both have had their fair share of really great duets. I for one can think of 'malare mouname' as a great duet with total involvement by both singers. But I think that PS has good duets too, I personaly like her solos better because I can't stand TMS's voice. I also think that duets in KJY-Chithra combo are good. Likewise, I think that AMRaja and Jikki duets are pretty good. But just because Janaki can give mukkals with equal support by SPB doesn't mean their duets stand out. Personally, I find quite a number of their songs like that distasteful primarily because they would be more fun to listen to without it all. Of course, you are probably going to talk about movie situations now:-), but I am just talking about the songs in general. Of course PS sings nothing like SPB, but SPB sings nothing like PS.

Umm...just so you don't think there was attitude in the first two sentences, I was really trying to clarify if you really meant it as a joke because of the smileys or you were serious but put the smileys in to tell the others to take it lightly. The reason I am explaining is because it is easy for people to misunderstand...:-(
