Hi all,
I just surfed thro' the net and happened to see the profile of PS. She was heralded as the "Lata Mangeshkar" of TFM. Does she deserve that crown more than SJ and Chithra?

As a person, I don't know who TMmahalingam is? I do remember a program where 'shahul hameed of paadukku paadu' was talking about that song. He praised it and a lady, I believe a singer from then that sang it in the movie, came up and sang the song. Why should I know TMmahalingam for that?
Sorry for Digression, Ravi engE?-)

SOrry, TRmahalingam. I don't know. He's a singer that MS says sings in high pitch and from Nov's comment, I believe he sang 'Senthamizh thEN'. But that song also should have a female version in the movie.
MS
Did this TRmahalingam guy also sing the song 'thEsulaavuthE thEn malaralE'. There's a part where the song goes real high and the male voice really strains to sing.

The thread is getting shifted to T.R.Mahalingam from the title of IsaiKuyil. No doubts exist about the great artist,he was a great singer, excellent in flute and also has acted in films.I remember to have seen him acting as "Narada" in one of the tamil mythological movies.
Back to the subject of Isaikuyil, I agree with Aruvi's point that everybody may have liking towards the performance of a specific artist.
It is also practically impossible to discuss this
topic based on their songs because they have all sung thousands of great songs. But from my personal point of view and assessment, I believe Chithra ranks on top in musical quality. The most commendable point is that she can get herself oriented or integrated to any type or variety of music, beit classical, semiclassical, devotional,
melody ,folk, modern, rhythm based or melody based etc.(By the by recall her interviews wherein she always talks about her great respect for SJ).A
very exceptional point in the gifted talents of Chithra is that she can be at ease in any language. This quality seldom exists in many singers. At least to my knowledge, she has sung in at least seven Indian Languages. While PS
and SJ were very comfortable with all south Indian Languages, they could not retain their ease when they sang in languages other than south indian ones. Even Latha Mangeshkar was not at ease when she sang in Malayalam. But chithra, always demondtrates her highly comfortable level and ease while singing whether it is Hindi, Tamil, Malayalam, Kannada, Bengali or Oriya.Look at her national awards-2 from Tamil,2 from Malayalam and 1 from Hindi

I totally agree that each singer is good in their own way. I have high regard and respect for these singers.
Even though they all can do any style of songs, karnatic, kaathal, sOgam, thudippaana, bakthi songs etc. In my view, these singers rank differently in each style.
For example I don't think after hearing "marakka manam kuuduthillayE" in the song "Inji iduppalagaa" that naturally, we can compromise to hear the same in PS or Chithra's voice.
I always relate PS voice with the women in "Maniyam Selvan" drawings. Matured, dignified and respectable. Its like the voice of a role model sister or mother or a woman you respect.
SJ's voice is more suited for sensual songs. She is singing for a woman in love. This is the voice for a lover or wife.
Chithra's voice is like newly sharpened pencil. Its very comfortable, she can do lines, circles, curves ... anything. She handles all nuances carefully and gently to make it look so simple. Her voice is well suited for a young cute intelligent girl like a daughter.
But the best part is, when we hear a song, we relate some of our inner thoughts to that song and the highness of that thought is what make that song memorable. Apart from the moment of conceiving the song, the music director and singers may not value the theme behind the song, but it is the poeple who listens to it so immensly value the theme or the memory relate to the song.
Some times I get very disappointed to see the singers doing their memorable, lovable songs very badly in converts on TV and live. We know every little nuances to the great songs but not them.
Its our "rasanai" that makes the songs, singers, music directors and actors timeless.

Hello everyone,
My appreciations to Kutty for having given a beautiful explanation and Mr.Shanmugam for having initiated this topic.
Well first of all I feel it is wrong to compare one with another. P Susheela is special in her own way and nobody is the authoriy for Music. I dont think it is right to title her or anybody as "Lata Mangeshkar of the South".
For those of you who dont regard PS as a great singer, should listen to some of her old numbers (Maalai pozhudhim mayakkathile, Sonnadhu needhaanaa, Mayangugiraal oru maadhu, Unnai ondru ketpen etc.) and try singing it again. One should note that it was a time when there were no tracks. So the whole song needed to be sung at one full stretch.
PS had such a versatile voice. I always used to feel in those days there was such a hype about the North (which exists to some extent even today) - whatever was done there would be projected to such a big level. So many artists down south never got the recognition due to them and I feel P Susheela was one of them. Lata had a great voice no doubt but definitely not the versitality PS had - singing in both high and low pitches, rendering the right expressions etc.
For those of you who disagree - please do listen to a few of her very old songs.
I am a great fan of Chithra too (esp. for her simplicity and ever-smiling face). But PS is definitely a legend on her own. Probably had she been in this era, she would have surpassed the acclaim got by Lata Mangeshkar.

Ravi,
Thanks very much for your appreciation.I do agree wih your comments about the simplicity and ever
smiling face of Chithra. The simplicity and politeness which Chithra retain in spite of her great achievements and fame add colourful feathers on her crown.

I always wonder why we have to compare and relate our singers to those from the North. Why look up to the singers from the North. No doubt that Lata and the like are great singers. But still.... Are TFM singers not original? Don't they have their own individualities and specialties?
Anyhow, I like them all.

We are discussing here about KSC's voice as that of a young girl etc. while Raja has started asking her to sing just thAlAttus only - refer KN (and PS, SJ? moochch!)
aruvi! Chitra'vukku `chinnakkuyil'nu pEru vandhandhukku kAranam `poovE poochchooda vA' (Chinnkkyil pAdum pAttu), which was reinstalled with the `kuzhaloodhum kaNNanukku kuyilOsai' and such `kuyil' related songs:-)

Hmmm...of late there seems to be more support for KSC/PS..no no no...SJ still rules as the isaikkuyil..one of the best songs of last year (by singing standards) is `mudhalvanE' IMO... (I can't be more objective than this, praising an ARR song!)
- From: rajaG (@ kcecfp01.sprint.com)
on: Wed Mar 29 10:17:27 EST 2000
eden: Only goes to prove that you are not objective either about ARR (in dissing him) or SJ (in claiming that mudhalvanE is one of the best songs of last year). I know it is your opinion, and you have freedom of opinion, speech etc..(you see I have just read the entire constitutional rights regarding speech in the "Brahmin Dialect Songs" thread:-)) but some opinions are so far out, that they are almost quasi-facts. These are opinions like Mel Gibson is more handsome than Senthil, or Aishwarya Rai is prettier than Bindu Ghosh (even comparing with BG's prime years) which are so strong that they are almost facts.
Does SJ merit contention for the isaikuyil status - Of Course! But MudhalvaneY should not figure in her 'achievements' list.

I guess no one seems to remember VaniJayaram, who started her singing career with Hindi films-who shot to fame with her first Hindi song, and for a brief period sang under the dir. of Naushad, Vasant desai, Pt. Ravi Shankar, won film fare award for her songs in Meera (Hindi film), won state awards in Maharashtra (for her marathi songs), also in Orissa (for her oriya songs). Due to the monopoly of mangeshkar sis. came down south and sang under the dir. of almost all the MDs in all the south indian languages. She is one gifted singer with excellent diction in whichever lang. she sang.
