Hi all,
I just surfed thro' the net and happened to see the profile of PS. She was heralded as the "Lata Mangeshkar" of TFM. Does she deserve that crown more than SJ and Chithra?

Are you going to discussing the songs in the song discussion thread or are you going to make a new thread. I don't believe that this is the right thread.
As you have said, every singer seems to have a problem with their tamil pronunciation in the beginning. Like PS, Chitra had a similar problem. But then, the ill fortune for singers these days is that MD's and lyricists don't take the time to correct them. Come on, they actually think someone with as horrendous pronunciation like Udit Narayanan will do well.
Not to mention the fact that it is heard enough to hear the singers voice with all the musical instruments over-riding the voice. Who can possibly hear the song. In PS's days they poured their hearts and souls in making good songs. It was PS's voice that dominated the songs then. Nowadays, the vocal is just a backup for the beat. In any case, You have too admit that PS had the oppotunity to work with the a great lyricist like Kannadaasan who brought life to mere words. If PS's songs stand out today and if they even reach the hearts of teenagers like me , who are supposed to be ARR/western music fanatics, then it is because of the lyrical quality as well. That is one thing that no singer after TMS and PS have been able to attain. They have not had such a golden opportunity as they did.
Nowadays new singers are introduced all the time, never mind they have talent, or different kind of sweet voices that are not similar to any other singer. I mean, all the female singers who were able to place themselves on the top have different voices. SJ and Chitra and VJ and PS and Swarnalatha. No one could even accidently mistaken each of their voices for the others. But I can't even figure out whose voice it is for the new singers without looking for the names. But if it was any of the ones I have named, it is so clear in my head about how their voices sound.

Thanks, aruvi.
I didn't intend to discuss songs actually here. may be I would I don't know. You need to have the right person to talk to. There used to be Sachu and many others who rarely post nowadays. BTW, are you in college? I work in IL, and as you would expect, as a consultant.

what I meant was, people who are here like you, shan and srinath are not to be found in "old songs" thread and those who used to post there are missing from there, too!

Why don't you open up the old songs thread again. I think that a lot of people are finding things a bit too monotonous. I am not in college. Doing my final year in HS. I have been in this forum for a long time now but only have started to post a while back. Where or What is IL, by the way. I will look in the introduction page for your posting.

Karthi,
Well, I used to post regularly in the old songs thread. I love old songs more than new songs mostly for the lyrics of Kannadasan and the great voices of TMS and PS. Konja naala andha pakkam edhuvum update aagaadhadhanaala inga suthittu irundhaen. BTB, I love to discuss about old songs.

I THINK CHITRA IS THE BEST. HER VOICE IS SIMPLY MELODIOUS AND ATTRACTIVE.
ANYBODY HERE CAN GIVE ME THE E MAIL ADDRESS OF CHITRA OR HER ADDRESS.

You should check with someone just in case. I know its in Salygramam or something like that. But I don't know anything about Indian streets. Check Tamilcinema.com or something like that.

Why such a question ? It is only PS,PS,PS........
SJ it tops in her own way.
Karthi, fyi this is the 50th year for PS, I think, her golden jubilee year. Can I have your e-mail address.
It is unfortunate that TFM does not have a picture of hers. The database has only one article on her. The PS page in TFM has been removed. We need to create a bio of her in TFM.

Hey, you like PS, I like Chithra, and Aravind likes Sujatha. MS likes Sundharaambaal and Nov likes Manorama's voice. We all have our favourites. I am tired of this game. Let's just come to an understanding that we all have our different tastes. One singer can be better than another only from a technical point of view. Since these ladies are all good, I don't see how it is possible that PS stands above them all. Just because she was the first popular female singer from the old days doesn't mean that she is better than the others. Her luck, as she once also said, is that she was always there first.

Come on Aruvi, you have to be fair...it's not because they are all technically good (though not the same) that we start comparing them...it's everything that goes to make a singer the best(and that includes luck too) that we take into account to compare artistes....
well, Rajagopal, how are you? Thanks for the information that this is PS' 50th year, I thought she started to sing in 1953....thanks, anyway. Here's my email id at the top.

And what is this everything? All our prior discussions pointed out flaws in each and every singer.

for that matter, I donot like any singer who "screams" to prove he has can deliver wonders at higher notes ! A typical eg is T.R.Mahaalingam.

Neenga oru paavamum pannavillai:-). Honestly, naan Sundaaraambal ezhuthinathE unga ellaarukkum pidikkum enra assumption-la thaan. After all, neengellaam 'old is gold' enru ninaikira group enru ninaichEn. I don't know much about Sundaraambal except that she was very famous then and had popular songs. Typically, I thought you probably did like her. Wasn't she the same lady who sang 'kaadal paravai kaatrinil...' something? I only know her 'murugan' song. And I have no idea who TRmahalingam is. My favourite classic voice is PBSreenivas. I also like that song 'Senthamizh thEn mOzhiyaal'. Besides that, I don't have any old favourite singers. Of course, I don't categorize Janaki with them. She's more special, to me anyways. Sorry though.
