I'm a new visitor to this website. I couldn't see anyone discussing about Vani Jayaram's songs.
Let me start this one.(It had been there previously pls. forgive me!)
"Ezhu swarangalukkul ethanai paadal..
Ithaya surangathul ethanai kelvi...
Vaazhum manitharukkul ethanai salanam.."
Wow! Beautiful voice!

Nice article. Thanks Naaz. It is true, he has many more duets with Janaki in telugu than with any other female singer.

Naaz,
you are mistaken. I did mention about En kalyana Vaibhogam, Neerada neram, Vendum Vendum Undhan Uravu, kannanai Ninaithal among others. But I got reminded that most of them have been discussed earlier. Probably only the last song saravanan helpem me out with the film Suprabatham.
Of course I do not want to talk about VJ-Anuradha- SG efforts. I do not like them!! Her pronounciation is faultless. That need not be repeated ad nauseum. I do not underestimate her one bit. She is miles ahead of KS Chitra, Jency et al.
ithukkum mela sollanumma.?
Ok ennoda choice for a VJ SOTD.
1. Rajathi Rajannukku Rani mele ... Viswaroopam
2.en Ullil etho yengum Geetham.... RR ?
of course Vendum Vendum Unthan uravu if not already given the p.
Naaz you do the needful? Officel sound card illai veetil netmost times illai. hence SOTD I just look up for discussions.
Damn it why am i giving u such explanations ;-). Kaumudi don't worry we won't come to blows .we are like that only.
Naaz thx for the link. He has been made the thalaivar of Iyal Isai nadaga Mandram. so there was a clipping in Vijay TV. naan dhanyan aanen. Enna kural enna kural...!!!

Kaumudi -
You're welcome! (and remember: we are like that only :-))
Vengayam -
PBS was side-lined in Kannada (where he was numero uno for many years) after the entry of Dr. RK. There is no comparison between the two voices, IMO.
I've been seeking an mp3 file for Rajathi Rajannukku from a long time. When Neel D throws up his hands, my hope hits the dust :-(
I just heard a VJ-PJC duet yesterday, after many weeks, months...I don't recall the name of the film, but the song goes:
Kadhai Sollum Silaigal
Manmadhan Vidum Kanaigal
Moththam Arubaththu Naangu Vagaigal
Avai Aan Penn Pazhagum Anandha Kalaigal...Kalaigal
Kadhai Sollum Silaigal...
Of all the singers of malayalam origin, I've always found PJC to be the best inunciator (?) of tamizh words. His voice also has a velvety masculinity. MSV was right in choosing PJC for two VJ-PJC classics -
Aadi Velli Thedi Unnai (the choric voices in this song deserve a special mention.)
Vasanthakala Nadhigalile
If these two singers had only the above songs to their credit, they would still find their names written in gold within the annals TFM history.

Meeting Greatness- Part 5:
--And so we returned to the dining room, drawn by that irresistible summons. We found the table invitingly laid with cups of steaming, fragrant tea, and assorted eats. Though V & J have a healthy fetish for frugal, nutritious food, they don’t believe in imposing those stringent concepts on people calling on them! V was the perfect hostess, earnestly urging us, in regular, thoughtful intervals, to take generous helpings of the eats and dry fruits, as we ensconced ourselves snugly for a leisurely tête-à-tête.
I started off by referring to Kannadasan’s singular tribute to VJ in his ‘Sandhithaen Sindhithaen’ (originally serialized in Kumudam as ‘Indha Vaaram Sandhithaen’). V folded her palms in salutation to the greatest bard of our times. ‘ That write-up gave me a honor that even a Bharat Ratna cannot equal’ she commented. As memories seem to rush in, she continued musingly, ‘Kannadasan Sir has worked with generations of singers—great singers who have done justice to his lyrics over the decades, yet to think that he chose to single me out for that rare honor, of being the only singer he devoted an episode to, I’m overwhelmed!’ she said humbly, her eyes moist with emotion.
‘That morning, when the Kumudam issue containing his write-up on me hit the stands, he called me up at 6 and said ‘Vani, unna pathi en manasala thonradha ellam ezhudhi irukkaen. Padichu paaru’, V recollected with a smile. She went on to share with us some special memories of Kannadasan. “He looked upon me as a member of his family. Once when he was celebrating his birthday with only his family members, he took J & me along with his family to Madurai, and we were fortunate to be with them during the special pooja at Meenakshi Amman temple, and share some intimate moments with his family’
V and J seemed to be lost in memories of the Kaviyarasar and the special relationship they shared with him- After a pause, V continued ‘Again, another time, when he was contributing to some Annadaanam scheme, he called me and affectionately demanded ‘Vani, neeyum un pangukku rendu mootai arisi kodu’- that was how close he was to us.’
‘A great man. His simplicity, goodness of heart, limitless creativity and humility are qualities that set him apart. I am privileged to have sung so many of his songs, and blessed to have received his good wishes and fatherly affection in abundance’ she said feelingly.
‘I am happy that Kannadasan Sir’s family still continues to shower affection on us. Even last week I had been to Kannadasan Pathippagam –Sir’s son gifted me a book titled ‘Kannan Koyil Paravai’--
I couldn’t resist interrupting her flow of thought and said excitedly ‘Ma’am! That’s one of my favorite songs!’ V smiled indulgently, and--- did what I was waiting for with bated breath--she sang the pallavi, and the first charanam of that timeless classic. Oh, the enchantment! Her voice, as sweet as ever, took us briefly to another world, another time, when giants like Kannadasan, MSV & VJ were making magic with tfm--

Its VJ’s birthday today—Lets wish her many more years of wonderful music, good health and cheer!
Meeting Greatness- Part 6:
I referred to the classic song ‘Kelviyin nayagane’ as an instance of the genius of Kannadasan, how in that song, with brilliant mythological analogies, he managed to succinctly summarize the entire story of ‘Apoorva Ragangal’- V nodded in concurrence and went on to sing the charanams of that memorable song, and had some special words of praise for the charanam that begins with ‘‘Thalaivaan Thiruchanoor vandhu vittan, devi dharma darisanathai thedugiraan’’- “Truly, to this day there is none to equal his creativity. What a genius!” she was effusive in her praise.
‘Another song where Kannadasan related the entire story--’I began. ‘Ilakkanam maarutho?’ V asked with a teasing smile- I could only nod in amazement at her astute answer! (Remember Watson and Holmes? – “Excellent” cried I. “Elementary” said he!)
And yet another moment of enchantment as V began with ‘Maniosai enna idiyosai enna--’ As she rounded off the pallavi with that mesmerizing humming, I reminded her of the lines from another charanam in the same song, where VJ so fetchingly brought out Kannadasan’s wordplay - ‘Maraithidum thirai thanai vilakki vaippayo, viLakki vaippayo’- just a miniscule deft change in a single syllable, and oh, the difference! V willingly obliged us by singing that charanam too.
And with Kannadasan so much in our thoughts, can MSV be far behind? Our conversation drifted to the Mellisai Mannar. “ How many wonderful songs, how many memorable recording sessions!” VJ went down memory lane---Time seemed to stand still as she recollected aloud some heartwarming events from those momentous times--
“ Some people in Nemili wanted to honor me, and so they had arranged a small function. I accepted, of course. I had a recording with MSV Sir in the morning for a film directed by K Shankar Sir. I mentioned to them that I would be going to Nemili in the evening and told them about the function. Imagine my feelings when I went to Nemili in the evening- both MSV Sir and Shankar Sir were already there- they had come all the way just to see me being honored!” her voice showing the depth of emotion, as she recalled that special day.
“ K. Shankar Sir was very particular that I should sing in his films, and many of the songs that I sang in his films became very popular,” she continued. ‘Oh, yes! ”I agreed, as I mentally listed her splendid works in Uzhaikkum Karangal, Indru Pol endrum Vaazhga, Varuvaan Vadivelan, Mangala Vaadhiyam, Suprabatham, Devi Darisanam, Deiva Thirumanangal, Balanagamma, Mirudhanga Chakaravarthi, Rajarishi, Navagraha Nayagi--
“Ma’am, I read recently (Kumudam Junction) about an incident long back about KRG calling you to sing in the middle of the night?”
VJ laughed, as she recollected, “ It was for Sridhar Sir’s film Aalayadeepam. The songs were already recorded, the film was shot, and the release date was announced. Re-recording was going on at a frantic pace to meet the deadline, when for the climax, Sridhar suddenly felt that a short song/humming would lift the scene to greater heights. It was 2 in the night. MSV is said to have declared to producer KRG that the only singer who would oblige them at that hour was VJ. KRG called me at 2.30 in the night—Of course, I went and sang.” She said simply, as though it is the most natural thing in the world to be woken up and called to the studious at an unearthly hour! Professionalism personified! (Of course, I thought wryly, today we hear that most of the song recordings by popular MDs take place only in the middle of the night!)
As both of us were silently ruminating on this remarkable anecdote, V broke into our reverie, and with a brief preface that among her ever favorite MSV songs, one song has a special place in her heart, sang ‘Idhayam pesinaal—unnidam ennathaan pesumo’--Many times during those few hours, Suresh and I had to remind ourselves that we were in VJ’s presence, and she was singing for us, and us alone, and all this was for real! And listening to her enthrall us with that Amarakaviyam was one such moment when I really thought this was a wonderful dream, and I was going to wake up any time—

VJ Birthday Special:
Friends, today (November 30th) is VJ’s birthday, and let us offer our wishes to this wonderful artiste.
And to celebrate, here are two songs that I discovered recently, absolutely stunning VJ solos-
While listing the songs of VJ in 1974, I had mentioned the song ‘enna kutram seitheno’ from Thikkatra Parvathi. I had also written that I haven’t heard the song.
Subsequently, I came to know a little more about the film, and also managed to get the song. As a bonus, I also found another marvelous song by VJ in the same film.
Navatharang’s Thikkatra Parvathi-1974 starred Srikanth & Lakshmi. It was directed by Singeetham Srinivasa Rao, and based on a story by Rajaji.
The film won the National award for the Best Tamil Film, and also won the Film Fare Award in the same category, and also fetched the Best Director Award for Singeetam Srinivasa Rao.
‘Bharat Ratna’ Chakravarthi Rajagopalachari (1878- 1972) was a great man in every sense- a zealous patriot, a trail-blazing social reformer, perceptive thinker, profound scholar and author.
As a writer, Rajaji was awarded the Sahitya Akademy Award. Rajaji’s lucid translations of the Ramayana and Mahabharata will find place in most urban Indian households. His other popular works in English include Baja Govindam, Thirukkural, Upanishads, Hinduism- Doctrine & Way of Life and The Geeta. His book on Marcus Aurelius is held as a celebrated treatise. His ‘Stories for the Innocent’ makes irresistible reading. He has written around 30 books in both English and Tamil. Many of his stories had social messages, espousing eradication of evils like untouchability and dowry system. In Thikkatra Parvathi, he advocated total prohibition, by detailing the havoc caused by drink.
Singeetham Srinivasa Rao (born 21.9.1931) is among the most popular directors of Southern India. Thikkatra Parvathi was his second film, Neethi Nijayithi-1972 being his first. After Thikkatra Parvathi, it was Kamal who brought him back to Tamil with Rajapaarvai in 1981. (Singeetam’s runaway Telugu hit Sommokadidi Sokokadidi –1978 was dubbed in Tamil as Iru Nilavugal). Later Singeetam distinguished himself in films like Pesum Padam, Apoorva Sahodarargal, Micheal Madana Kamarajan, Magalir Mattum etc. He has directed more than 55 films in Telugu, Kannada and Tamil. His latest experiment is an animation feature film- Pentamedia’s ‘Son of Aladdin’ (scripted by Mark Zaslove). Singeetam is now excitedly doing the spadework for 3 different movies: a Science Fiction film in Telugu, another film called ‘Traffic Jam’, and Kamal’s next film titled ‘Krishnaleela’. Asked about his age, he laughs and says ‘I think like a 21 year old!’
The music for Thikkatra Parvathi was by the renowned Veena Maestro Dr.Chittibabu.
Chittibabu was said to be a child prodigy who gave his first full-fledged performance when he was barely 12 years old. He was trained by the great Emani Sankara Sastri, and blossomed into one of the most acclaimed Veena players of his generation. While his traditional pieces are soul stirring, his innovative works like ‘Musings of a Musician’, ‘Solitude’, ‘Rhapsody’, ‘Rendezvous & Old Memories’, ‘Fairy tale’, ‘Royal Salute’, ‘Temple Bells/Serenade’ etc showcase the genius in all his glory.
Chittibabu was no stranger to tfm- his veenai was the mellifluous backbone of Sridhar’s Kalaikkoyil. Thikkatra Parvathi, was perhaps the only film he independently composed music for, and though he gave a wonderful musical structure to the story, his work went largely unnoticed, perhaps due to the film coming a cropper. In fact, VJ was amazed when I mentioned this film and her songs in it!
Listen here to the wonderful theme music that Chittibabu came up with for Thikkatra Parvathi:
http://in.f1.pg.briefcase.yahoo.com/bc/nat_saravanan/vwp2?.tok=bc.llkSBWSWABPtm&.dir=/&.dnm=theme.mp3&.src=bc
And Chittibabu chose VJ to sing both the songs that he envisaged for the film- an acknowledgement by one great artiste of another great artiste’s talents—
Here’s the first VJ song from Thikkatra Parvathi- ‘Aagayam mazhappozhinja aathukku kondattam’: It is a song that details vividly, stage by stage the joys of expectant motherhood and nature’s magic called childbirth. Chittibabu’s imaginative composition and innovative interludes make this song a timeless miracle. Each charanam has a different structure; the entire song delights in its unexpected turns. VJ brings such evocative moments to the song—it has to find place among her best efforts. Listen to the exuberance each time she sails into your heart with ‘Pulla perum kaalam vandhaa ponnukku kondaattam’, and let us discover anew this forgotten masterpiece--
http://in.f1.pg.briefcase.yahoo.com/bc/nat_saravanan/vwp2?.tok=bcvklkSBDQSmhRr4&.dir=/&.dnm=aagayam.mp3&.src=bc
And we now come to the next song ‘ Enna kutram seitheno’- This haunting song holds the record of being the only film song that had lyrics penned by Rajaji himself. VJ says humbly that this was great honor for her, to have sung Rajaji’s lines. He was a good writer, as we have already seen, and his ‘Kurai ondrum illa maraimoorthi kannai’ is a song that has been immortalized by MS Subbulakshmi. ‘Enna kutram seitheno ellorum kaanamal’ too has some arresting lines. Chittibabu has chosen the Harmonium here to accompany VJ as she embarks on her soulful song. Hark at the despair that she brings into each line, especially when she almost breaks down in the last repetition of ‘ariyaaro ambuviyil’—
