I'm a new visitor to this website. I couldn't see anyone discussing about Vani Jayaram's songs.
Let me start this one.(It had been there previously pls. forgive me!)
"Ezhu swarangalukkul ethanai paadal..
Ithaya surangathul ethanai kelvi...
Vaazhum manitharukkul ethanai salanam.."
Wow! Beautiful voice!
VaniJairam.com - A site that has lots of info and songs of VJ.

add to my previous piece
No amount of cogent writing by Naaz or Saravanan would make me read a chronology of say malaysia Vasudevan ( I do like about 20 songs of MV!) or ilayaraja's singing efforts . hope the cloud is clear now!!

And Vengayam, to answer your question: 'Oru paarvai podhum' from Vadai Maalai(1982/ MD:MSV)is the only duet PBS-VJ in tfm, but indha oru paadal podhum--its an enchanting, dreamy song.
'Is this the only song that you have sung with VJ?" I asked PBS when SL and I had an unexpected chat with him at Woodlands Drive-In. "Yes. But we have sung 4 songs in Kannada too" he said.

Naaz, the more I recall and write about the meeting, I more I realize that it all became possible only due to your efforts, and I can't thank you enough!

I spar with you only in the true spirit of sparring. With a complete absence of malice.
It is the mutuality of that sentiment that makes me feel I that I can speak my mind without being deliberately misunderstood (which, thankfully, you have proven to be true time and again.) I cherish that honesty.
Saravanan -
Hush! :-)
It is that same "mutuality" that I was affording S and his VJ project. Nothing more, nothing less.

Vengayam, both VJ and PBS are living legends, and have stamped their class in all their songs.

Did Neel D have the VJ-PBS duet up at the website?? I've heard it recently, but can't say if it was the website or the egroup files...
Shubamangala (from Shubamangala) is the only Kannada song by the duo that I can recall rightaway. What were the other three, I wonder?

Vijay TV's Sangeetha Sangamam
Vijay TV conducted a 'Sangeetha Sangamam', a festival of classical and devotional music at the Image Auditorium in Chennai on November 15 and 16, 2003, which turned out to be a real treat for music lovers.
The programmes would be telecast on Vijay TV from December 15 for a month (in the evenings) to coincide with the December music festival in Chennai. Vijay TV's programmes on classical music have always been looked forward to by rasikas during the annual music festival. This year too the programmes on the channel would be a delight for the rasikas.
A feature of the programme was the presentation of classical and devotional music by noted playback singers from the film industry. However, the organisers would do well to pick a proper venue for such a major music festival. Singers like Vani Jairam and Hariharan were not happy with the reverb -- the feedback from the hall was disturbing the musicians performing on the stage. In fact, Vani Jairam's programme was delayed for more than half an hour as the reverb factor had to be overcome.
The highlight of the two-day festival was a performance of ghazals, thumris and devotional numbers in Tamil and Kannada by Hariharan. The auditorium was overflowing as Hariharan, endowed with a rich voice and a strong mooring in Hindustani music, rendered ghazals in his own inimitable style. The audience lapped every moment of the concert. 'Sutrum vizhi sudarthaan' and 'Krishna nee begane baaro' receiveda thunderous ovation from the essentially Tamilian audience.
He was ably accompanied by Ustad Liaqat Ali Khan (sarangi), Pradeep Pandit (harmonium) and Rajiv Mahaveer (tabla) among others.
Earlier, Anoorada Sriram and Sriram Parasuram's Hindustani regaled the audience with a brilliant rendering of Hindustani and Carnatic songs.
The emphasis on sruti was evident throughout the concert.
Unni Menon too did well, though he concentrated almost totally on songs on Aiyappa and Guruvayurappa, both in Malayalam and Tamil, especially those rendered by K J Jesudoss. He was accomanied by a key-board player and a pad, besides the traditional instruments.
Vani Jairam was at her brilliant best, picking compositions in various languages and rendering them perfectly, taking care to protect the lyrical beauty of the song in every language. The emphasis on identification with the God through the bhakti rasa was apparent in her concert.
Among others who performed were Sriram Parthasarathy, Sriram, Harini, Chinmayi and Srivardhini.
The programmes were ably co-ordinated by Vijay TV producer Mahendran.

Yes, there are ways of being carried away, and then there are.
Not that I want to refute your assertion, but if pointing out that you've not acknowledged (at least, not in so many words or ever without holding back) VJs "superior" talent and artistry (never mind if your chosen one is somebody else) is a sign of me being "carried away" - then, heck, you've got to see me when I pipe up to expose these gaping holes of silence (unsaid, implied or mostly indirect - in others' posts) - Man, I practically levitate! :-)
I'm still hopeful, though. One of these days, you might just find it in your heart to write about a VJ song of your choice and how it appeals or affects you (that will be a first of sorts from you in this thread?) - just the way you did when Mayakkama Kuzhappama was featured as SOTD a few moons ago.
An invitation to schmaltz, you smooth that salt and pepper beard and strike a sagacious pose. Why hold back, if it moves you so, is what I yell from up in the air! :-)
Maverick -
Thank you for the highlights report. I wonder if VJ and Hariharan sang a duet or two - a geet or naghma? That would be something to listen to to, if it ever happened.

Naaz/Vengayam - Om, shanthi shanthi shanthihi!!! We don't want two intelligent VJ/PBS fans to collide head-on. Saravanan will fulfill everyone's desires, enna Saravanan, sariya?
Saravanan
One more enchanting piece of excellent writing. You deserve one nice pat on the back for literally walking us all through V and J's house and their conversations and music. Thoroughly enjoyed this latest one. As we get closer and closer to the climax, it gets more and more interesting. Thank you, dhanyavaadah, nanri.

Btw, I couldn't listen to your version of 'Sindhippogum mugile', though I desperately tried so many times. Can you please send it to me through yahoo briefcase?

It is not just your track - all the tracks of SOTD seem to be on the blink. I doubt it is your fault. However, do send me your track if you have a copy, thru email. Thanks!

I am so sorry, unfortunately my hard drive crashed after I made and uploaded that song and so could not retrieve my own copy of it. Please try again. Geocities is a big pain-in-the-neck site, but it does work. Cutting and pasting the link in a new browser window normally works too.
Is there anyway, I can transfer the song from the geocities website into the yahoo briefcase - I have no idea how to do that. Someone has to tell me how.

Thanks for listening. I loved the whole exercise - it was fun doing it and also interesting to see how different minds think in different ways of tuning a lyric.

I had to look up the dictionary to find out what ditties meant!!:-)
