I am G.Suresh for those of you who don't know me, this is my second posting in this forum , it is unfortunate that my earlier one 'Has Arr not copied Narumugaiyae' has to be deleted due to some controversies.
Coming to this latest one , We have lot of singers who resembles SPB in singing, closest being Mano, Arun Mozhi and on one song by Ramesh "Rahde en Radhe.." in Japanil Kalyana Raman, Can we identify here who comes next to SPB in terms of Soft voice and versatality. My choice is Arunmozhi , Awaiting response

Neenga sonna inge yaarum ketkamattanga. May be basha vandu sollunamo? Otherwise how in the world one can compare Kumar Sanu, Shankar Mahadevan,Udit etc., who cant even sing in one language properly to the likes of SPB who proved great in many languages

NCR no body is comparing nasalists like Udit,HH,Shanker,Srinivas,....etc, with the lord(SPB)
of IFM, may be m.raffi a step down SPB,but apart from that no one dares come 10% near SPB.

MS;
I know there are some idiots who uses abuse words in thi forum due to their low self esteem & confidence, We just have to feel pity for them;
anyway lets discuss abt the Padmashree Dr. SPB;
1) his first song was in a telugu movie some time in 1966, then in tamil "iyyarkai ennum", then the break through to his singing career in "aayiram nilave vaa", since then this legend had never looked back.
2) recording over 40k is an extremley difficult task, which he had overcome with great ease & comfort, that is a miracle!!!
3) most beautiful voice in IFM, which is such a manly voice with great deepnes & bass, which can not be matched by any other singer in India, closest match is DR.balamurali krsihna, not M.rafi, he lacks in bass & manly voice

Alright, time for a serious discussion. What are the qualities that set apart SPB from the rest of the crowd - pretty much everything. Sweet AND clear voice (for some reason the colour yellow comes to mind when I think of his voice), great range (good bass and upper registers), great modulation and versatility in emotions, clear pronounciation. Drawbacks: Can go overboard when he improvises and puts in emotions without constraints (as seen in many concerts, this is of course IMO), accent (at least in Hindi)
Of course, he has always proved himself technically superior in Hindi duets too. Lata herself has said that post-Rafi, only SPB could match her in the higher tones.
Now is there anybody who encompasses all these qualities? To a certain degree, it could be Hariharan (HH) and/or Shankar Mahadevan. I personally don't like the sound of SM, not a very clear sound. HH has a better tonal quality but my guess is his range is a bit limited. That's why he tends to go into falsetto often. He does have good songs with natural upper tones (Vennilave Vennilave, Kaadhali Kaadhali, the extraordinary humming in Alala kandaa etc) and good lower notes (in Colonial Cousins and the newer Aatma) but I just don't like his voice at times. He can sing equally well in Hindi and Tamizh (there maybe faults in his Tamizh pronounciation but in general his playback passes off well with the audience), can sing classical songs, emotes pretty well (what are his dappankoothu/happy go lucky songs?)and has good modulation (listen to Kaadhali Kaadhali where the voice is very clear and pure as opposed to say Vidukathaya intha vaazhkai). So far it would seem he's a good successor in Tamizh. Unfortunately, he's getting up there in age himself.
Next would be Mano. Ability to modulate extremely well, decent pronounciation. I am not aware of his classical renditions too much but sometimes his voice sounds too heavy. Also his range is quite not in SPB's class though he tried to go high in a few of Ullathai Allitha songs.
The rest SM, Harish are too early to comment. One guy Krishanraj seems like a fine singer. I was bowled over by his Babylona and Vellerikka songs. Has he sung any soulful melodies/slower songs?
The only other language SPB rules is Telugu of which I have pretty much zero idea. HFM of course, never was SPB's forte. He never was regular enough there to merit him as a serious HFM singer though his Salman Khan face was aweseom, fit the actor to the T. Don't know why he doesn't sing for the Khan anymore. I do think that in his duet with Kishore Kumar in Saagar, he easily outshined Kishore. I mean, Kishore could put on a sweet, awesome voice when he wanted (like Foolon Ka Taaron Ka or Ae yaar teri yaari)
but he just had to go and sing with a funny, sqeezed throat for the song Yunhi Gaate Raho.
I just wished Rafi and SPB had sung a duet together. Would have been really cool!
Oh if its of any interest at all, I was rooting for Kumar Sanu even though I hate the very sound of his voice because...well, I felt like doing it. I am impressed to see the vehemence of the dislike for him that people have :)
PS: Can you believe it? This page doesn't accept the word formed by "ph" and "ool" even though I meant it to be flowers??? That's why I typed "foolon" even though it sounds even more inane. Damn!

Amit;
Pls don't compare nasalists like HH,Shanker Mahadevan, Srinivas, with the legend like SPB, SPB's voice so manly, with great bass & modulation.
SPB sings at high pitches with great ease, which many singers lack of,(except TMS),his modulation, & emotions can never be matched by any other singer in India!
Mano's voice is bad, with a horrible voice, he immitates SPB greatly, although he says that his idol & role model is SPB!!, mano can not modulate, it sounds terrible!!, he is only good for songs like "mukkala mukkabala"!
KJY is also great, but then again he lacks modulation, variety & emotions(although he is extremley good at sad songs).
M.rafi's is also great, but his voice lacks bass & manly, nevertheless he was also great, but not as great as SPB!

Amit,
>>>Lata herself has said that post-Rafi, only SPB could match her in the higher tones.
I don't think Lata meant that SPB could match her note for note in the higher notes because the only person who could do that is Rafi. SPB is maybe the only present singer who can try and match her to sing at high notes. Rafi was the only one who could match Lata "gayaki" for "gayaki" on the high notes. In fact, I think Rafi had a even higher range than Lata which he has proved. We are comparing a male and a female singer here which is completely different but in terms of male voice, there is no singer who has even come close to Rafi's range as well as Lata's range on the female side.

Indian Music Fan;
I do not think u have heard "shankaraparanam","sirukum salangai", "salangai oli","mythili enai khadali","maine pyar kiya","Hum apke khon","ek duche kileye","saajan","saggar","amarkalam", I think u should listen these songs then comment abt SPB, especially in "nanum unthan uravai", in mythilli ennai khathali, SPB sings in "ettuk katai", if u know what I maen.
Rafi had a manly voice , hahaha, biggets joke ever!!!, even though Rafi was great, he lacked manly voice, but our SPB, well no body in IMF has a manly voice that SPB, ghantasala was also great!!!
Listen to all spb's Hindi songs & other songs his voice is divine, manly, very deep, excellent bass........!
M.rafi did not have singing style of his own, but SPB has which is being imitated by third grade singers like Mano & arunmozhli.
SPB's voice is truly a gift from the god, saraswathi!!!
