  Let me clarify my position.
  
  First the assumptions.
  
  Assuming that all the people in this forum are objective, unbiased, unprejudiced people (sounds unbelievable, but for the sake of argument, lets hold this to be self evident).
  
  [The reason we make this assumption is to remove the aspect of subjectivity of music appreciation; i.e. the reason a fan likes/dislikes any music is then not because of the fan's inherent likes and dislikes (which we have no concerns with), but purely the quality of music.]
  
  Then let us examine the reasons why such an ideal fan would not like AR Rahman's music on the first few hearings.
  
  The following could be the different reasons
  a) Rahman's music is really bad.
  b) Rahman's composition is so radical that most fans cannot take this in the first few instances.
  
  If a) was true then what will explain this sustained popularity that Rahman has been enjoying for the past 10 years- because you cannot fool all of the people all of the time, illaya. If Rahman's success were a mere flash in the pan, then we can say that Rahman's compositions are indeed poor.
  
  This brings me to my hypothesis no. 2. Then why do these objective listeners (most of them ARR fans themselves) dislike ARR's song on the first hearing? The universality of Rahman's music- I dont mean universal accpetance here...but the nature of ARR's music in general cannot be tied down to one genre- dappanguthu/ carnatic/ western/ film music etc... And therefore most of the fans, who are accustomed to one style of music- say that of the Isaignani, find it very difficult to switch over to ARR songs. If you observe ARR's work, you will see that there is no signature ARR style- he is constantly reinventing, attempting something new.
  That is why the first time you listen to it, you feel that this is very bad...what you really mean is that I am not ready to listen to it now, so I dont like it. But the more you listen to it, you start getting accustomed to the red-herrings, the little twists and turns of the song and start liking it. So you see, the very people who berate his album at start, begin liking the music after multiple listenings.
  
  Im afraid that I have digressed from the thread's primary objective- of reviewing Baba, but looking at the last few posts, I dont think I am alone in this.

  I am not sure, was it he who wrote that 47 message. I have doubt, as I have read his very old responses. He seems to be a nice chap but enjoys even when some other araloosu bashes ARR baselessly.
  
  Okay WN..get hold of cassette. I think you will like it, for psychology says, you enjoy those things a lot that you don't expect much from it. By this time after reading all the postings, you might be having a sort of disappoinment..well baba will turn out to be a surprise for you.
  
  I had a similar feeling with KM after seeing all the bashes then, WOW what an album it was..

  This thread has created record for being the most active thread ever. ARR actually touches your mind and heart..you like it or not ..he does.
  
  See no eee, kaakka in IR's album thread with IVAN and Devan released recently. Kaadhal Saadhi...released an year before I think...still the neighbore of IR did not listen to it either. So no point..ARR is like a current..if you are good enough, then you can make use of it or else you have do die of electrocusion.
  
  Some times electrocusion can cure mental disorder...JJ and CAPS LOVER won't realisae this.

  top 10 global non-corporate brands,
  the rating is on basis of perception of bt editors and several
  marketing pro,
  subsequently bt conducted an international survey through NFO MBL ,
  the survey checked two things
  1)the awareness level of the brands  and
  2)what the people know these brands for,
  
  a r rahman is one among the top 10, (arr got 17% in 1st cat. and 50%
  in 2nd cat.)
  others include sachin tendulkar,
  amitabh bachachan
  v. anand
  goa & kerala
  yoga
  taj mahal etc.
  
  this is not in any order, in fact bt has not given any order,
  
  more here,
  bt says " the buzz in chennai is that rahman has signed two broadway
  musicals"
  the article is there on page 84, ,the bit on arr is on page 86,
  
  one more bit on bollywood says dil se was the first hindi movie to
  break into uk top 10, ( i think most of us know this),

  Using Baba cassette sale records to justify that Baba songs are good is an utter nonsense. I posted the kumudam article where it claimed that laks of cassettes been sold even without showing the cassette cover. It appears that ARR can never fail with this kinda attitude.
