Kiru,
Thanks for your wishes. We hope and try our best to make this program pleasant.
Mr.X,
Those kind of stupid questions from the audience sometimes are indeed are very bothersome, it is hard to foresee such situations hopefully the NY audience will be good.
Dr.Shankar/Thoppus,
if you happen to check this thread please give me a call, I didn't want to call you as I know you are busy taking Maestro to different places.
MS,
How did the NC program go as a whole?

Kiru and others,
If any of you have any recent info./good web sites with emphasis on research on Music and intellectual / cognitive development in infants and children please give me some pointers, if possible and time permits I am planning to discuss this aspect with Maestro IR during his visit here in NY if he would do some sort of a project on this lines after the " TIS" project.
I do have some materials on this lines and Google does spit out a lot more, but I thought if any of you had come across something very recent and more interesting and appealing articles on this aspect please post it. It is kind of too short a time for me to do some refining at this point. Any pointers/suggestions appreciated.

The Italy program is supposed to get over in may 23, has IR already presented in Italy and has the troupe gone back to Chennai? Is Massimo some big guy in Italy?

Gyan - Massimo Simmonini is a low-profile composer, who happened to listen to IR's works (the songs from 1980s) - for Massimo, it was love at first hearing, especially the song "Puthham pudhu kaalai" captivated him so much that he even learnt it byheart (without knowing Tamil!) - while browsing the net, he came across newtfmpage and posted a query - in reply, I contacted him and gave him all the details of IR - with this reference, he went to Chennai, met IR and sang a few of IR's songs to IR himself to show how much they have mesmerised him! and then invited IR for the Angelica Pierre Musique Internationale festival - first time around, IR could not make it - after 3 years, at last Massimo's efforts have borne fruit
btw, Massimo knows me well!

Music_lover, thank you for the info. Italy has some legenday baroque composers like Vivalid, Pagannini or Puccini (the latter two, I don't much). But, did IR present to the audience? How was the audience reaction?

Very interesting second article posted above = http://www.dinakaran.com/daily/2004/May/21/cinema/CineNews1.html
It seems Massimo persisted for every year and finally very determined he persudade IR every day and won over IR to conduct this program this year, a mixture of old and new songs!!!!! it is going to be broadcast on Italian TV. This was a program where IR was the star of the show, the main theme of the event and also it was for Italians, not for Indians in Italy.
I wonder how many people attended and what songs IR could play, since he could not field a trained ochestra for his old songs!!!!!!
Music-lover, please enlighten on thie significant event in Italy. Apparently, IR did not seem interested at all but yielded to the persistence of the deidcated Massimo.
IR also mentioned that everyone gave a standing ovation.
More details requested of Music_lover

Gyan - first of all, I am actually based in India - I do things behind the screen ! I am not in the main picture at all - besides Massimo, there are several things happening simultaneously with Maestro! you will all come to know of it when the time comes!
so if you want to know about the Italian trip, you need to ask Maestro himself!

Music_lover: the best thing IR can do is for music is make available all his 70s and early 80s songs in DVD audio or SACD, but alteast make all language films available. Foe me, that is the main samayal, Italy, Symphony etc.. is all oorkayi, appalam, etc... main samayal is difficult to find these days.
Pls convey this desperate message to IR.

Music_lover..god bless you !!!. I wish IR gets more opportunities like these. Mossimo, is a good negotiator. This 50-50 old-new is a good deal, I think. Even a parent who has many kids knows one or some of them are more special. Same thing with songs ..some are very special..however old, they have the effect on you.
Prabhudas, you have a very good proposal after TIS. I think IR is the best person to handle..already bam chikku and ka ka ki ki ku kE songs from that kamal movie are a favorite with my almost 3 year old son. My son also is fascinated by the sounds of nature in IR's songs (cricket, water, waves etc) I would be willing to make a humble contribution to this project (like I did for TIS over a year back).

Frankly I could not even get a minute to talk to IR. There was a mad rush since things were happening on a week day and his schedule was very tight. TO me he appeared a ery simple, frank and unassuming personality with fans and talks straight from heart. His speech for the TIS was very impressive and he also described a little about the Italy experience.
It seems to me that to an ordinary fan he is very approachable. He does not have an air of a genius that he is. One nice example that emphasized his philosophy of music's oneness stood out. He sang a tune in shuffle rock, folk and carnatic style only to surprise everybody how the same progression of notes could possibly give various colors. The tune that he sang was that of "nagumomu ganalEni" - a well established krithi of tyagaraja - which I could not decipher till he sang it in the carnatic style at the end. There was a good round of applause when he explained this.
There was one question which atleast allayed my questions about TIS. He explained why he is raising funds. From his talks, he does NOT seem to be viewing this project a regular one that would be sold as just another album in the already infinitely big music market. In stead he seems to be viewing this as a cultural gift that is to be passed on to the next generation. There was a question as to whether he is incapable of doing this project all by himself.
His patient reply was:
"I can definitely finance this project myself. I had earlier financed the rajagopurams of Shrirangam and thiruvaNNaamalai and I can, to my knowledge, finance this project form my pocket. But it is imperative to understand that this is not how a culturally prestigious movement needs to be done as per the shastras. For example, when the kings built temples, they ensured that everybody from the worker class to noble class contributed as much as they could to build the temple. The king was rich enough to do it, but the norm was not that. This project, as I conceive, is a cultural gift that is to be passed on to the next generation and in such an attempt the norm is that all the like-minded individuals come and contribute. Another example - Kanchi mutt has enough funds to build their own buildings, built they always let the public put a share of their money to raise the buildings because the public would feel great being a part of it. So please come and contribute as much as you can. In September, we will be releasing the album"
I believed in his words and contributed a squirrel's share to TIS. I don't think that a genius/achiever like him needs to take pains to raise funds for such a project after he has made crores in the music industry, unless he lives for convictions that he outlined in his speech. I believe the talk was sincere.
