P.U.Chinnappa

Tamil Cinema's first Chapter consisted of actors
who also sang very well. The two great stars of
that chapter were MKTB and PU Chinnappa. In the
singing department MKTB was clearly the more popular
one among the masses. But, in acting, dialogues,
fights etc., PU Chinnappa was the better one. He
was probably the first to effectively do two, three,
and even ten roles in a single movie.

We have already collected lots of information
about MKTB, thanks to Manisekaran. Shall we do
the same for PU Chinnappa?

  contain these songs? If so, can you give some
  details of those CDs?
  
  SVV and Kunnakkudi V Iyer are NOT the same persons.
  
  The movie Harishchandra came in 1944. It seems it
  had two classical hits:
  
  1. kaasinaadhaa gangaadhaaraa (Sindhu Bairavi)

  What was P.U.Chinnappa's last film ? What other movies did he act in after "Sudharsan" ? When did he expire ? I believe he is one of greatest singing sensations in Tamil Nadu like S.G.Kittappa M.M.D.Desikar and MKTB. These people could match (I belive out do!!!) any carnatic musician of any time.   I like Chinnapa's acting very much. He was a hero from the drama stage and that has given a lot of experience to him. He does sword fencing in most films perfectly. I love the song "Deva magal ival yaar" (Raga : Mand) from Kannagi. Kannagi is a very good film depicting Ilangovadigal's epic. I am sure that no one can create a better version of the story. And in that movie Chinnappa does best as Kovalan. His voice is very good that it adds grace to the dialogues. Recently I saw Kannagi in Madras when it was screened by a old film club enjoyed the movie very much. I hope to see many such films especially PUC's. I think PUC acted in some 30 films and sadly many have been lost, and with it our culture also has been lost. I strongly feel that films of the 30's and 40's had the true essence of movies. This was because movies were at its infancy. As it grew, it has taken a wrong course and it is much polluted as our environment today. Infant Indian cenima had lots of values to tell our new generation. I wish we popularise those old films, preserve it, so that we may preserve our past and our culture.

  went on even till late 60's. A very respected
  lyricist. Many who knew him well even rated him

  in PPP, my guess is that PUC acted in about

  RPG/HMV released a tape each of PUC (Ringing Voice of PUC) and SGK songs (Immortal melodies). The PUC tape contains several of the songs discussed in this thread (paarthaal pasitheerum, chandrothayam etc). I found a best of PUC tape as well (pirated) with songs from Sudarshan, a musical discourse (krishna bhakthi?), mOhanaanga vathani unaiye kaanum baakyam varumO,etc.

  Sureswaran: The only song I can identify as from either of those movies is chandrothayam ithile which is in the HMV (songs from sudarshan, krishna bhakti, kubera kuchela, mangaiyarkkarasi, jagathalaprathapan, kannagi) tape. The pirated tape does not identify movies- it does not have anything close to 'nandu sirpi.' The songs are: kathal kanirasame, keligal seithidavaa,namakkini bayamethu, kanna paramatma, chanthrothayam ithile, dhamodara, musical discourse, yaarukku venduvathu, mohanaanga vathani, saarasam vaseekara kangal, ellorum nallavare, maharaajargale, nadai alankaaram kanden. 70% of these songs are in the HMV tape - the others are paarthaal pasitheerum, selvame suhajeevaatharaam, enna seithaai, and unakken veenkavalai. A separate noisy tape made by Latha Musicals (in tamilnadu) of which I have a copy has kaasinaathaa gangaadhara, kelikkaigal seivaal, venpuraave, namasthe namasthe, ithuve punniya boomi, ennum ezhuthum, yaarukku venduvathinge, antharangam athuve, kannile vilayaiyaadum, thiruchenkaattaan_kudiyile.

  Yes PUC's songs are very catchy especially because of his voice. Yes I too long to see the film, but unfortunately, many of PUC's films have been lost. There are lots of Songs of PUC that you can enjoy. MKT, PUC and all stars of the 30s' and 40's had the same long hair hairstyle. It was considered modern when it was usual for people to have "Kudumi" (pigtail). You must listen to "Namasthe Namasthe" from Vanasundari also a very nice song like Sarasam.
