I'm a new visitor to this website. I couldn't see anyone discussing about Vani Jayaram's songs.
Let me start this one.(It had been there previously pls. forgive me!)
"Ezhu swarangalukkul ethanai paadal..
Ithaya surangathul ethanai kelvi...
Vaazhum manitharukkul ethanai salanam.."
Wow! Beautiful voice!

I wonder why u didnt want it posted. Sorry anyway, but I see nothing wrong in expressing your opinion with confidence on an online forum. And we are in a democracy after all :-) No-one's gonna sue u for what u've said here :-)

How does one prevent a Deepa Aradhanai corner from happening?
I can only speak for myself, and here's my spiel: The reason(s) I visit this thread and others (at times) is for the following reasons:
1. I am reconnecting with some of the music I grew up with and music that has a special meaning to me.
2. The experiential aspect of listening to tunes from one's youth is indeed nostalgia - but what I have discovered here is that there is a community of avid listeners who have their own memories and attachments to THIS music. The collectivity is both reassuring, and soothing.
3. Whenever I make a observation here which falls into the category of "criticism" I try to give it my best analytical shot. I try to differentiate between being a "fan" and being a "connoisseur". I can be both, an unapologetically so.
4. This forum is not my personal podium to pontificate or sway people to my "tastes" in music. The fact that most posts here share my tastes is merely a happy coincidence.
5. The very fact that we preface our expressions with "I think" "I feel" "What affects me is" are all pointers that acknowledge our "biases" - be they good or bad. Denying one's subjectivity is defeatist, and frankly, unnecessary.
6. Demonstrating one's superiority as an "armchair" critic is child's play. It doesn't take much. And that is perhaps one of the more dire drawbacks of having a discerning ear: one leaves oneself open to the accusation of elitism and highbrow-ery. I strive for a finer balance all the time.
7. Such fora serve and fulfill different needs for different people. I am here to share, revel and revisit. For others it is a break to bat the breeze. Yes, there's room for everyone.
Voila. Seven Notes to Myself holding myself back from the Deepa Aradhanai crowd. But I have to confess: I do find all the jostling and hurlyburly of voices and views rather exciting. Don't you?

Yes, AVR - "most" being the operative word in that sentence. :-)

AVR - did you listen to the list of songs recommended by Priya? Now that post was MORE than a mere happy coincidence. (Check it out, if you haven't already.)

avr, nothing wrong really, really did not want every conversation to be centred around that, that was all.
Naaz, true, whether it is explicitly mentioned or not, there is an intrinsic "IMO" attached to every post by every poster. But the "personal taste" factor is so subtle that it often masquerades itself as a fact and settles down with the listener's musical personality/identity for good. Yes, trading "punches" can be enjoyable (no sado-masochism here:) as long as the above mentioned truth lies somewhere at the back of one's mind. That is the difficulty though:).
Your point on nostalgia... this forum has provided ample opportunity for me to indulge in it for me to put that aside gently for a moment. Therefore these days I often find myself pretty critical about certain numbers that were a part and parcel of my formative years.I am not suggesting anything to anybody here, just explaining my current disposition as a listener.
Karthi, unga position eppadi ?
BTW, did you notice Vijay Bhaskar's strong leaning towards Karaharapriya and its janyas like most of his Telugu/Kannada colleagues? Most of the songs listed by Priya are set to KHP or its janyas. Infact, there is a small phrase in 'enakkoru uthavi sei' that gets repeated in 'iLamai azhaikkinrathu' in 'engamma sabatham' (or vice versa).

Mr NAAZ AHMED:
Yet another gem from our favourite VJ-IR combo - a Telugu one "Sagara sangamame". There is a version by SPB-PS also.
Its from the movie Seetach.... something, something. Pardon me for that!

Yes, and dont forget to listen to the VJ-Kumar Gandharva duet. I mean what I say when I assert its VJs sweetest song :)

avr,
that song is the Telugu equivalent (but a completely different version) of 'Darisanam Kidaikkaatha'
BTW Bharatiraja's 'Sitakokachilaka' was the Telugu remake of 'AlaigaL Oyvathillai'

Thanks AVR (what's with the sudden gender designation and capitals :-)) I have listened to Seethakokachilaka. All the songs are by VJ. I tried to get to the KG/VJ song but my computer crashed. Will try again today.
Ragavan - if I could do something about a webpage for VJ songs (if I had the technical wizardry and wherewithall) I would have done so a long, long time ago. As they say: Build it and I will come!
Observer - if the personal is political, then the personal is also factual (to slap an old phrase into the 21st century.) Some may not be aware (genuinely) of the moment when an emotional response to a song/singer becomes a raison d'etre in itself. Such transitions are quicker than subtle, and stronger than reason. If you think this thread is a Deepa Aradhanai then take a peek into the ARR/SPB line-ups in the menu....seriously, you will see for yourself that this thread (and its devotees) are way more restrained in their ahahbeshbeshrombapramadhams.
PS: I don't listen to much "current" tamil film music. Don't know why, but the scene (the way it is today) churns my stomach and srambles my senses. I think the albums should come with this advisory: Listen at your Own Risk (as you may never listen again!)

AVR - I just listened to Runanubandhachya - it is truly wonderful. I had heard it before but had long forgotten how it flowed...thanks for the revival!
On this hearing I was startled to notice how much LM had influenced VJ's earlier songs. Of course, VJ has acknowledged LM's style and how it has inspired her in her singing career. I wish I could locate VJ's songs with Abisheki. They were marvellous - but I don't have any idea where one might find them now. I hear that Shaunak (Abisheki's son) is doing rather well in the classical music circuit. What do you think of his music? Is JA still up there in the marathi scene? I had such a memorable stay with them in Pune (besides singing, we drank a lot of feni!)JA is a sincere, caring and god-gifted man.

MR NAAZ:
JA is no more, I hope u know about that!!! He passed away I think about a year or two ago.
Shaunak is doing very well - really very well in the classical music scene - he regularly performs at the famous Sawai Gandharva festival of Pune.
I havent heard very much of their output at all, primarily because my interests lie more in the light classical style of music.
Has VJ sung for JA?? I didnt know this. What is it? Is it Marathi abhang or is it natyageet? Anyway, do tell me.
Also are u a gentleman or are u a lady, do tell us that. :-) I think u are male since everyone refers to u as Mister or 'he' , 'him' etc. Also I guess u are pretty old (since u talk of your days of youth :-))
Actually VJ with Abhishekhi is quite a bit of news to me. Around late October when u had re-opened this thread, I had asked you this question, and u hadnt replied to it. Anyway!!
Many thanks
MR. AVR.

OOpps here is one place when I must apologize - by "pretty old" I meant to say that you are probably 40 years of age ATLEAST, as you talk of your days of youth. I did not mean to be rude at all!!!

Priya - I really liked Azaghana Sandhangal and Thenna Mara. I had never heard those songs before. Thanks for the links and keep them coming is what I say...!
Have you heard "Indru Kakkaikkum Kuryvikkum Kalyanamam...." from the film Saranalayam (MSV). I wish someone would post a link to "Mankandaen Mankandaen..." from Rajarishi. It is a beautifully rendered duet by KJY&VJ. Classic Illaiyaraja (on the lines of Indraikku Yen Indha Anandhame...from Vaidhegi Kaathirunthaal). Where have tunes like that gone? Everyone is raving about Mun Paniyaa (I just heard it today after great recommendations by a friend) and I found it to be both derivative and disappointing. The SPB of Malaioram Veesum Kaatru and Kalainera Poonguyil kept coming to mind. Honestly, is the music from Nandhaa really all that great? Or does it seem that way only because of the great shortage of good tunes these days? Sorry for this SPB sambhashanai...I'd better stop here before I am reminded that this is a VJ VJ VJ thread!

Naaz:
About those SPB threads - they are TOO MANY and filled with nonsense. Enough to make someone want to eat up poor SPB!! They provide NO INFO whatsoever about his songs/talent at all!!
