  yes Vasu, very true. I believe this is true mostly for the vivadhi ragas.
  
  few other ragas dominant in thei respective chakras include thodi, naasikabhooshaNi, chalanaattai etc.

  That was a good comment on Guna song!
  
  'asai adigam' might be Sindhu Bairavi. i had always sensed a similarity in Dhenuka, Sindubairavi, Desiya thodi(Eg: Namo Namo Raaghavaaya - Sri Thyagaraja kriti - learnt from a MLV cassette) [ though i know there are varying in grammatical sense] ! Just now understood that 'kandupudichaen kandupudichaen' ALSO sounds with a tinge of Dhenuka?? Again the quest never ends!

  Anu, I think somebody here mentioned a while back about Hello My dear wrong number in Madhuvanthi.
  
  You are right about similarities between Dhenuka, Desiya Thodi, thodi, SB etc. They all have the similar prayogams in the sa to pa and pa to sa range. Desiya THodi is very similar to thodi itself - it takes all notes from thodi except ri in aarohanam. SB, as we all know, takes all kinds of notes, with its own unique chaayal!!!! These 2 are thodi janyas.
  
  Dhenuka is the 9th melam and the only difference between this and thodi/DT would be the Ni note.

  IR, thanks for the madhuvanti song, have to go thru. The only non-filmy song i know is 'kandanaal mudhalai' sung by Sudha Raghunathan often in concerts. I suppose that is classified under evening raga in hindustani.
  
  You are right, SB is said to use all major notes.
  By any chance is 'kandupudichaen kandupudichaen" influenced by Dhenuka?

  Marupadiyum song does not take the nishadham of Dhenuka( Ni3)? so confirm panna mudiyalai. Actually after the pallavi it is taking a different way and again swaying back to 'SB' like notes.

  A few non-filmy madhuvanthi's i have heard - "Kadal konden" composed by Amarar Kalki sung by S.Sowmya (CD name - Neethimati) is a good one. Nithyashree has sung Bharathiyar's "nallador veenai" in Madhuvanthi in one of her cd/cassettes. There is also a thillana in Madhuvanthi by Lalgudi (Not in the Dance of Sound -album, its in a cd with Zakir Hussain accompanying him).
  
  Filmy madhuvanthi - as IR said Hello my dear is a very good one (a lilting KJYs voice). Another is Nanda nee en nila - a very haunting madhuvanti. SPB has sung in one of his "Collection" cds. I dont know if its pure madhuvanti - it may have some dharmavathi mix, nevertheless a good one.

  I found the following two songs in Lathangi scale
  
  1)Thogai ila mayil aadi varugudhu (sung by SPB)[starts off with hamsadhwani like pallavi, but even pallavi ends with stressing Dha1. Clear use of Ma2 P Dha1]
  2)chinna raasave (clear Ma2 usage, rules out sarasaangi)

  IR_fan surea payanangal mudivathillai song sounds like Lathangi.....as far as "chinna rasave"...it is a never ending sandai....romba naal munnadi naan lathangiyanu kaetta pothu yaaro(IR ngara maathirithaan nyabagam)...cleara Ma1 is seen in the lines "Mochukku Mochukku ravellam pechukku"....apdinu sonnaanga......

  chinna raasave is lathangi the only difference between both the melas lathangi and sarasaangi is the madhyamam. it goes this way.
  lataangi (alias geetapriyaa in Dikshitar asampoorna mela system)
  Sa Ri2 Ga3 Ma2 PaDha1 Ni3 Sa
  Sa Ni3 Dha1 Pa Ma2 Ga3 Ri2 Sa
  Sarasaangi
  Sa Ri2 Ga3 Ma1 Pa Dha1 Ni3 Sa
  Sa Ni3 Dha1 Pa Ma1 Ga3 Ri2 Sa

  Prabhu - yes - it is set in Charukesi and Sarasaangi. charukesi - pallavi; sarasaangi - charaNams
  
  IR_Fan, Ram, Kupps - I would say thogai ILamayil is hamsadhwani based with a very beautiful usage of "Dha1" for that added color! I am not sure of "tharalam". KeLvi pattadhillai. If that raga is hamsadhwani plus dha1, then that is the ragam.
  
  Anu, we had a discussion a while back. Chinna raasave seems to be sarasaangi based. There is no Ma2 prayoham in the song and Ma1 in "Mochukko mochukko" as Ram pointed out.
