Valaji - "adhisaya ragam anandaragam" (KJY) for most part is valaji. Final charanam is in bhairavi.
Let me take a stab at the melakartha numbering scheme and share my thoughts.
The scheme is called "katapayadi" scheme. Skrt alphabets are arranged as ka-varisai, ch-varisai, ta-varisai, pa-varisai, ya-varisai. Each alphabet is given a numeral, ka starts with 1 and ends with 0 on 'jnya'. Again starts with "ta" on 1 and ends with "na" on 0. Again starts with "pa" on 1 and ends with "ma" on 5. Starts with "ya" on 1 and ends with "ha" on 8. There is a fomula to remember this also: "kaadi daSa tadi daSa paadi panchama yaadhyashtaka" - ie 10 from ka, 10 from ta, 5 from pa and 8 from ya.
Its a common trait in sanskrit mathematicians to "complicate" a simple formula. So Venkatamakhi for some reason decided to codify the raga names with the first two letters reversed.
For eg, take kanakangi and substitute the first two letters with numerals. (ka =1, na=0) gives us 10. Now reverse it to get "01". This is the first melakarta.
You can see all the melas with number "0" in it contains a "na" syllable. Ex: Kanakangi, Ratnangi (in case of composite syllable like "tna" you have to take only the purna syllable ie na) until Dhenuka.
Also notice that all 10X melakarthas start with na - natakapriya (10), natabhairavi, naganandini, navanitam, namanarayani, nitimati, nasikabhushani - means that their reversed number start with "0".
My opinion is that the "katapayadi" scheme is not invented by Venkatamakhi. This was in existence even before him and he only applied it to music, which is quiet ingenious. If any of you have studied the "Vedic mathematics" the same scheme is used for remembering several mathematical formulae. (Thats why I said skrt mathematicians have a trait of "complicating" a formula). Though the "katapayadi" formula used there is slightly different.
Another thing about the "Chakra classification" is each chakra is named in such a way that its number corresponds to sth very common for us to remember . For eg the first is indu chakra - there is only one moon. Second is Netra chakra (two eyes) etc.

Hello All
I was listening to "Vaa Vaa kandha Vaa vaa ennai kaavai velava" song in Varali.Which sounded very similar to Guna song "Partha vizhi paarthapadi".
I happened to see this info in ROS saying its kalyani and Gaanamoorthi .
Correct me if I am wrong.
- From: Anu (@ 68.49.138.51)
on: Wed Apr 3 15:55:54 EST 2002
That was thought-provoking! Varali-Dha 1 and Paavani -Dha2 (guna song is set to) vary by dhaivadham. (correct me if am wrong) and the arohanam for varaali goes like this
Sa Ga1 Ri1 Ga1 Ma2 Pa Dha1 Ni3 Sa
Cutting from IR's reply:
Sa to Ga - Gaanamoorthi
Ma to sa - kalyaNi !!! i think neenga itha paarthu konjam confused?
IR, Ram please join. This is like coffee-bite advt, the quest never ends!

Anu,
U are perfectly correct.....the song definitely has Varali's prayogtams especially the pallavi reminds of "Seshachala nayakam" a varali kriti br Dikshatar......but listen to the chorus after the pallavi it definitely sounds like kalyani.....there is nothing to argue abt. this....Pavani ragam is a avial of Ganamurthy,kalyani,varali;-)
- From: IR (@ 38.220.167.205)
on: Wed Apr 3 17:21:18 EST 2002
Ya. It is indeed gonna sound like all the ragas in chakra 1 and chakra 7. The Ri1 and Ga1 note are dominant in these ragas and they pretty much dictate the prayogams too...
- From: Anu (@ 68.49.138.51)
on: Wed Apr 3 17:24:06 EST 2002
Ram, you are right. s "seshachala" sounds similar.
no arguments, thats why used 'quest'! (:-)
- From: Vasu (@ 192.35.232.13)
on: Wed Apr 3 17:28:32 EST 2002
Anu,
Correct. varali (derived from 38-Jhalavarali) differs from paavani (40) only by D.
imo, varali is so dominant amongst its nearby melas, (due to lack of kritis in other ragas) so any non-varali raga within that chakra resembles varali. only if you listen carefully to uttaranga, the distinction can be made.
though going away a bit from thread's subject, is there any raga thats so dominant in its own chakra (masking others)? or the "dominance feeling" is purely subjective?
