the shahjahan number is like shankarabharanam or tinge of harikambhoji (as IR said, about the nishadam)?

another interesting thing I noticed in the song "Paartha vizhi"....If u listen to the the chorus it sounds like kalyani a lot....I was wondering y IR has mixed kalyani with paavani....then I realised that he has used only Paavani but used the notes Ma,pa,dha,ni....which are common for both kalyani and paavani......that is what gives a feel of kalyani.....

mannikavum, konjam confusion on similarities. 'Paartha vizhi' also sounds more like Ganamurthi ( i know a carnatic song 'ganamurthe').

IsaiRasigai is again excited about "paartha vizhi" song. :-). Given the scale of Pavani, it fits stunningly to the "devotional+love" atmosphere of the song situation in the film.
"Appanendrum Ammaiendrum" form the same film GUNA is set in Mayamalavagowlai.
Ilaiyaraaja has set "nanmai nalgum" song in film "ezhumalaiyaan magimai" in chandrajyothi, a close relative of pavani. Haunting scales, both these PAVANI & CHANDRAJYOTHI.
Regarding Vaanile Thenila song, thanks Ram for pointing the number. It uses "Chakravagam" notes, but as is typical of IR, it finds "vakra" usage
;-)(yet not ahir bhairavi either)[btw IsaiRasigai, i didn't find anya swaras in the song vaanile thenila, can u clarify where?]
Anyone here listened to "paadha kolusu paattu" from "Thirumathi Pazhanichaami"? My bet is it is based on "karaharapriya". I also feel "thirunaveli seemayile" from the film "Thirunelveli" is Karahapriya too. Anyone to validate these?
IR, can u name some good CARNATIC keerthanai in "GOWLAI"?

Glad u r back.
Please clarify on this. As I know Bavapriya is 44th melam in 72 melam of Venkatamagi. where as Bavani is Panchama varja janya raagam of Bavapriya. Kindly give ur professional opinion.
Meanwhile, please help me identify some tamil film songs based on both the above.

:-) IR Fan
Oh! that is a good collection of popular krithis in Gowlai. A few more I can think of: Mahishasuramardhini (Dikshitar), Thyagaraja paalaya (Dikshitar), CharaNagathi (Gopalakrishna Bharathi). I believe a while back we talked about "VEdham nee iniya naadham nee" song!
More information on Bhavapriya vs Bhavani: (Dont blame me if this is too much information!!)
Venkatamahi classified melakartha ragas based on certain criteria and came up with a list of 72. Before that, during the Dikshitar era, they had their own melakartha scheme, now known as the AsampoorNa melakartha scheme, where the mela ragas need not have all 7 notes and could take a vakra (zig zag) scale. Raga Bhavani, per the asampoorna mela scheme, takes all 7 notes in Bhavapriya, but the aaro/avaro was vakra.
Notes: Sa Ri1 Ga1 Ma2 Pa Dha1 Pa Ni2 Sa
Sa Ni2 Dha1 pa ma2 ga1 ri1 sa. He composed a krithi called Jayanthi shiva bhavani in this raga. Later when Venkatamahi refined and defined the melakartha scheme, each of the 72 mela ragas had their asampoorna mela raga equivalent. And the asampoorna mela equivalent of Bhavapriya is Bhavani!!!! happada, this is the story of Bhavani!
There is another version (of recent origin) of Bhavani, and as drb said in Caps, it is a panchama varja janya of Bhavapriya. (sa ri ga ma dha ni sa - sa ni dha ma ga ri sa). The only composition I can think of in this scale is one by Dr. S. Ramanathan - Bhavapriye Bhavaani Baaramma - a very beautiful song - I believe Unnikrishnan sings this very regularly in his concerts and so does Sowmya. I have a CD by Dr. SR which has this song. Am not sure if it is available on the net.
phewwww, so much for bhavani vs Bhavapriya :-) inime yaaraavadhu enna thittineenganna paarunga :-)

Addl INfo:
It is also believed that Venkatamahi just came up with the 72 mela scheme and most of the ragas were named later or the names were changed later. I think (need to check on this one) - the melas as it exists today, was finally codified by Govinda Dikshitar (other name for this mela scheme is kanakangi-ratnangi scheme 1st and 2nd mela names). This may not be interesting to many! But I thought it may be useful for those who are interested in the evolution of melakarthas :-) mannichukkonga :-)
