S. J. SURYAH'S HOLD over the Tamil box-office is simply amazing. Four years after the release of "Kushi", a blockbuster, the director has turned hero with "New". The film has taken a fantastic opening all over Tamil Nadu to the surprise of the trade, as two months back, its bilingual in Telugu ("Naani") went without a trace. This in fact created distribution problems for "New", and later, the regional censor board also effected major visual and dialogue cuts. But Surya was optimistic and went ahead to release the film in 117 screens in Tamil Nadu where the opening day collection crossed Rs. 1 crore! Said Surya: "`New' is turning out to be a mega hit and the very same industry pundits who had written off the film before its release are saying that it will do better business than `Ghillli'."

  new mega hittaana adha vida avamaanam thamizhanukku venaam. sex as a subject has been handled with maturity by veterans like balachandar in aval oru thodarkadhai, jayakanthan's sila nerangalil sila manidhargal, marupiravi(oedipus complex) and many others in the past. ennamo shankarum, surya vum thaan mudhalla sex pathi padam yedutha maadiri sila per solaradhu nalla joke.
  shankarum, suryavum arai loosuthanama , as if tamil youth are desperate for sex maadiri kaamikkardhu is just for cheap attraction.even balumahendra's azhiyaadha kolangal was taken with some sensitivity. telugu audience were mature enuff to kick the film out. hope tf audience also trash this junk so that we don't find mushrooms of this cheap type flooding the movie market

  surya seems to know crooked ways to make money at the cost of youth's sensibilities. arr's music is everything but new. probably he got pissed off with the bawdy, gaudy, third rated stuff and decided to punish surya.
  'F' Fail grade movie and a very average music is all new about.

  reason it flopped in telegu was they put a major star in this role.this role is best suited for a new face.with no preconceived conceptions of how the hero should be and act.if u had put a rajini or sarath kumar etc in this role it would have been a dud in thamizh also

  I think S.J.Suryah is going to last in this industry. He really has some stuff in him. Now he is adding the MARKANDEYA (MAMI SONG) in NEW . Shooting is going on. The song will be added to thwe theatres by the first week of august. WOW. Great News.

  Not every movie need to be watchable with one's family.
  Yes New is definetly not one, neither was Virumandi.

  Maybe. But if he had made 'BIG' as it was, it definetely would have flopped amongst tamil audiences. so he was shrewd enough to know what sells these days and made 'NEW'. I honestly can't make such statements on SJS bcos I myself have watched 'New' knowing what it was (though I didn't find it too entertaining. but athe samayathula it didnt have the amount of vulgarity that we haven't seen before in tamil films) and some other matter movies in English. yelaatheyum pannitu inga forum la naan vanthu intha maathiri post panna athu thaan heights of hypocrisy aagidum. but if you feel you dont enjoy such movies honestly, well..you have the right to voice your opinion. but again...inga movies are made for everyone. So if thats not the movie for you, do not go and watch it. again, as jacky said, i never saw it being advertised as a 'family entertainer'. yenangapaa, antha trailers and TV clippings paathuttum padam yenna maathiri nnu puriyaama irukkumaa enna? :-)).
  
  Probably, you should ask the question to yourself when you are producing a movie spending some 5-7 crores. If the audiences dont feel a movie like 'Anbe Sivam' is worth watching, would you as a producer spend that amount of money in making such kind of good movies in future? It is both the audiences and the directors who take the blame/credit for making a movie a flop/hit.

  Hey SJS said in the TV program "Live Choice"(Raj Digital Plus) that he is shooting the "Kumbakonam"song and he said that he is going to add that song in the movie NEW.
  And by the manner in which he said it seems that ARR is going to be the composer for his next movie also.And it is a bilingual.He said their combination had worked well and expecting to work with Rahman again.

  One of the lousiest movies ever to be released. The director lacks creativity and one would be wondering how can this movie runs. And to think that it is the fans who are making these kind of movies a roaring success. Heights of vulgarity and a lack of cohesivity in the movie.

  As a fresh woman engineering graduate who has just started working, I preceive "New" to be a misguided film on sex. Thank God, scathing reviews from my college mates and decent magazines prevented me from watching this seedy movie. I only hope the Tamil film audience are intelligent and sensible enough to give a big Nose Cut at box office to surya and his clan like the waterloo shankar met for the crap 'Boys'. How come the choosy ARR accepted this offer? Is his TFM market that bad??!!!
  Already today's womenfolk have to battle lots of eve teasing and sexual harrasment if she steps out of her house. The success of cheap exciting films like "New" will only encourage flood of films like "New". Let us all collectively teach these people a lesson at box office

  I haven't watched the movie as Maverick alleged.
  I saw[couldn't help it] thre 'vimarsanam' on sun tv [in US] AND MADE MY CONCLUSIONS ON THAT FEW SCENES ALONE AND iWILL NOT WATCH THIS MOVIE EVEN IN DVD!!
  And, btw, don't cheapen yourself by comparing this to VIRUMANDI even for argument sake.

  wow so they show a few scenes and u jump to conclusions?:P very well done mr. sk rofl.ppl didnt do this for BOYS movie and then they whine and make excuses.then for this movie they see the few scenes and whine and bicker.sigh i wonder wat would have happened if they put the actual story in the trailors.
