A new box-office record!
http://www.hindu.com/mp/2004/07/15/stories/2004071500690301.htm
S. J. SURYAH'S HOLD over the Tamil box-office is simply amazing. Four years after the release of "Kushi", a blockbuster, the director has turned hero with "New". The film has taken a fantastic opening all over Tamil Nadu to the surprise of the trade, as two months back, its bilingual in Telugu ("Naani") went without a trace. This in fact created distribution problems for "New", and later, the regional censor board also effected major visual and dialogue cuts. But Surya was optimistic and went ahead to release the film in 117 screens in Tamil Nadu where the opening day collection crossed Rs. 1 crore! Said Surya: "`New' is turning out to be a mega hit and the very same industry pundits who had written off the film before its release are saying that it will do better business than `Ghillli'."

Nattamai (duplicate?),
I don't have to go and check out. My point is that if he had time to commit Jakkubhai and BF in two months, then he would have accepted other offers if he had any. Thats all !! Hey, he was humble enough to accept it but not his fans.

"A couple of months ago ARR didn't have any tamil films and he himself admitted it during his SUNTV interview. But his fans wanted to hide it and kept yelling, claiming HE IS TOO BUSY WITH INTERNATIONAL PROJECTS and that's why he didn't have any. Then Jakkubhai happened and ARR was MD. Now, BF. So..I don't know what will his fans say about that false claim."
Can you really say that ARR was out of projects and was simply sitting in his home waiting for someone to knock on his door?
His international projects like Warriors of Heaven and Earth, Bombay Dreams etc.. are big success among the masses and still you say he is out of business.
How stupid?

Maddy,
----try amking fun of christians and muslims----
Now, now, why are u childishly bringing down other groups just to compare and drive home ur point? You're insidiously making it seem that these groups are responsible for the sorry state of affairs. Havent u heard how the popular movies have villains with names like Basha, Anthony, Francis Anbarasan, Mark Anthony?? Seen enough Hindi movies where there's atleast one Anglo-Indian character(Keith Stevenson/Tom Alter) regularly among the villains? Sit back and watch without the blinds, there'll be enough ammunition on either side.
----tell me how many brahmins talk "NEKU-NOKU" tamil still-------
And what's your problem if they do talk ?? Maybe you might take it in the pessimistic way, but I bet 80% of viewers dont construe the Tirunelveli/Brahmin/Coimbatore/Madurai/Chennai dialect as deriding the particular community - actually they enjoy the dialect as indicative of the distinct charm of each community and in the larger picture, the greatness of Tamil as a whole.
Avoid injecting a slant into your interpretations

Mr. *, but understand basha, anthony, francis anbarasan (i think you searched so hard for villain names :) athan aboorva sagotharargal padathula one in a group of four paavama vanthuttu pora delhi ganesh character name lam serthurukeenga :) ) are not shown as religious persons..they are just character names.... they are never shown as connected to their religion in anyway.... so u can say the name is only for fancy and is not aimed at denigrating the religion.........(most of the times)
but when it comes to brahmin community it is purposefully aimed at them, their culture, their religious practices , their sentiments... and further dude, secularism is not if you mock at one religion you should mock at other religions too. understand that..........

rs,
christendom is made fun of in the western media & hollywood movies beyond any imaginable levels, much more than what our media does to specific groups like brahmins...It may be interesting to note that even in Kerala (where the church goers are estimated to be >25% of the population), their clergy is made fun of in the media, movies etc in a large scale, without any protests...
However in TN, church missionaries / nuns are typically viewed as minority do-gooders (schools / hospitals etc.) which reflects on the screen too, probably because their reputation is still not bad enough...

Pappar director K Balachander showed these papparpasangal come up in life by selling their wives. The movie which they show this is "Varmaiyin Niram Sivappu" . Movies sometimes show the reality all the pappar mami's need some sudu from people like us because their husband sleep after eating thayirsadam.

can we now stop this casteism talks and get down to discussing about NEW alone :)
fine, as i said app_engine, i dont view secularism as you shud be thrasing every religion and mock at every sacred thing....... only thing is the so called secular directors and samooga neethi kavalargal directors trying to mock at a particular community alone....... as if other ppl are like "ondru engal jaathiye ondru engal neethiye" type......yeah it happens everywhere..in bollywood till recently a particular religion was aimed at showing them in poor light as terrorists..... this branding of religion/community/language must stop...that is my point of view........

Mr.rs,
In your first answer to my post, you very conveniently ignored my rebuttal to Maddy's complaint on portrayal of dialect and its interpretation but cleverly picked a point to harp on your grievance once more. And your phrase on statement was merely re-hashing what I stated in my original post. Hence I'd no option but to encourage you to interpret things the way you feel like and fire your bullets accordingly.
Just my explanation to your charge, hope this issues wont be prolonged. You are welcome to have the last word if it pleases you.
