i think things will improve if you guys take care of 2 things.
1. Better playing methods,
2. Better sounds
I would request guys to pick up this 2, better playing will change things,
If you hear Naveen's work, he just uses piano, but because of his technique, he rocks!...

yes comment. naveen rocks big time. listening to his interpretation of the old tamil classics reveals the underlying structure much more clearly (than ... :-) ). i was listening to his enna enna vArththaikaLO. was it awesome or what!
rjay: i visited your page, but didn't get a chance to listen to mohanam. ms was indeed talking about horror and healing.

"If you hear Naveen's work, he just uses piano"
Actually, this is the way to go, IMHO..base the music around an instrument. I dont have to tell you guys that various genres evolved around the instruments. This is the only way to change the bleak music landscape in TN/India. Nowadays, I cannot pick a song and say that the singing is good, drums is good or anything in particular..overall it seems okay but after a while nothing stays in your mind. So I think it is better to concentrate on the playing methods, keeps things simple and ensure the composition is wholesome/melodious and memorable. This is a humble opinion from a non-music savvy listener.
BTW, rjay, I think you are developing a style ..very rhythm oriented..Style is more important than skills/talent etc to be commercially successful !!!

UV, I listened to you compositions after writing the above post and you can tell why I liked it :). Very discreet use of drone in the background and energetic flute playing..Good idea to put a picture of Kannan as well :). Why dont you get a real flute and a good microphone ?? you will be all set..You could add the drones and drums to the mix on the PC.
(BTW, the Wild one had too much level for the rhythm..Also, do you want to use loops for that long ?)

Kiru,
I have not heard from you for long. Was planning to write.
thanks for listening. Which way do I go now - do I develop style or skill and talent? ;)

Rjay, finally I had time to hear the reggae in mohanam.
Over all it is good, but can improve a lot.
Strong Points:
1. Sounds original,
2. You have tried - no doubt about it.
3. Backgrounds sounds like a reggae,
4. Drum fills are good
5. Melody is fine. (Reminds nelakadalil orathil at places, can be avoided)
Weak points
1. Needs more chords change over. The organ comp sounds like ready made stuff.
2. Synth brass, harmonica sounds are not good. Do use them for lead. Synth brass is used only for dance kind of music.
3. There was timing lag in few places; you need to practice a lot before going for a take.
4. Please buy a good keyboard.
5. Bass can be little louder; bass mostly covers reggae.
6. Should have added harmony in some places.
Keep working all the best.

I will try to bring in more variations in percussion and arrangement in my future songs.
I am currently working on a song which invovles mainly on piano and harp will you be interested in playing it for me naveen.

The intro was good; you have sung it well. I hear Novel Ideas The beat loop has a timing lag, could have used more variations,The brass needs some modulation, but playing has improved.
Try to avoid the root note ending, I generally don’t tend to play the “root” note for a while, this will leave people thinking on the raga. vocals input level is high,
Good job,

UV,
Both singing and playing of the lead instrument was very good - 'spirited' is the word. I know you are using beat loops, can you layer some tabla or mridhangam here and there over this for beat variations ?

For the valuable feedback. I have noted down your feedback and I will try to improve on these issues of variations and orchestration in my next songs.
Naveen will mail you soon
thanks again

UV and others,
Are you comfortable reading Western Notation?
Recently I bought a score writing software and planning to write notation for my compositions and our melodious Tamil film songs in future. It is difficult to express the playing technique by just writing the notes A, B, C#.. or by writing the chords above the lyrics.
If you are good in sight reading then you can easily follow the score. If not, you can slowly practise bar by bar.
Yesterday I started writing score for 'Vaseegara' song. you can check the music in my idrive.
http://www.idrive.com/njmusic
Let me know if you are interested.

Naveen

Good job Naveen!! I wanted to save pdfs with cakewalk, but that option doesn't exist. Which score writer did u use?
UV, my comments are no different from others. Although the melody is mostly based on a raga, you can show variations in the harmony a little more. I think it wont be a bad idea to move harmonies "away" from the raga little bit and resolve to the note "in" the raga - but I guess you will need to experiment so that u dont spoil the mood of this song.
Also, I don't see a definite structure. It sounds like one big piece with no meaningful phrases if you know what i mean. Of course this might not have been your intention when you composed this piece. But it will be great if you can compose short and complete "phrases" and join them tastefully. To provide continuity, you can add some fill-ins which I am sure Karma can handle real cool. Besides that, one way to develop interest in the listener is to place the rythm slightly different from the main lines. Maybe you can use a triangle, clap, or shaker to compliment this - to tell the listener that "the piece subsequent to this is my theme"...or whatever.
Anyways, this is not the only way. In any case you can use ur own imagination and no one is stopping you!

Swamiji,
It is 'Cakewalk Overture 2'.. yes there is no option to save the score as pdf. To print the file as PDF, we need to have Adobe PDF writer installed on our machine. I just took screen shots.

Guys..until now i was really not sure whether I should post my link here...I am not a lettered musician...but used to have tunes floating in my head....I've compiled a few with the Casio CTK-731, 450, Tuareg sequencing software (www.brambos.com), flute, water cannister and in one instance my voice. I've written a few songs in english but didn't find the time to set them to music.....I guess that unless I am open to criticism and suggestions, i can't progress....so pls give me the boquets and brickbats after listening at :
