Song which had the greatest preludes and interludes(group violins) in TFM IMO.Typical IR nadhaswaram and mirudhangam(kalyana music) inbetween(other song:Poongathavey thaazh thiravai).Great singing.SPB'oda counter sounds like 'uhum','anha' while Janaki sings..superb !!
One more 'R' varisai heroine introduced by Bharathiraja in this film.Revathi,Radhika,Ranjani,Rekha,Radha..etc etc
I hav heard claims that Pandian will give money to the producer to get hero chance. Is that true?can someone clarify?
Totally a good tune,great orchestration,excellent singing(lyrics can be heard crystal hear),nice lyrics.What more do u need in a song?

Pandiyan was a shop keeper or something who happened to see BR in a market street in madurai in a traffic jam. BR wanted this guy after he saw him and booked him up for this movie. This song was shot in the outskirts of bangalore in a place called Dhoddaalamara or Big Banyan tree. BR's picturising of songs was legendry until he started making movies with his son.
Revathi was recommended by somebody (I think Chitra Lakshman) who saw her dance performance. A daughter of a military malayalee her original name was Asha Kelunni.
A beutiful number by IR.

" A song that frequently appears in the top 10 Ilayaraja songs and all-time favorite songs lists."
Totally agree to that... Great song.. SPB at his best when he sings 'konjam maranju paarkava konjam mudugu theikava' ...

GCT_Kuyil, I last saw that coffee bar sometime in 1981, after which my visits to VNR were very few and rush-rush (no walking around)...however, I still remember tasting their coffee just to listen to songs in `BIG' speakers in those days of radio (IOKS)...
**********
pothi vacha malliga mottu - one of the all-time great songs from IR...melodious, non-stereo number (there's even a pathos number which was very effective in the movie)...we used to even sing this song reversed in the hostel (thi-th-po cha-ch-va ka-li-ll-ma tu-t-mO) for fun (one college mate whom I met recently in Romulus,MI, who's so much fond of Thamizh, recalled this after almost 20 years)...
The `tune' was so melodious and unlike Raja's numbers in that time period...there was even a kisu-kisu that it was a MSV tune stolen by GA while sitting with him in the studio and given to Raja:-)
SPB/SJ excelling with a lot of `annyOnyam'...brilliant clapping after first saranam adds effect...Revathy was fresh and promising...
One of the greatest preludes ever, evoking emotions in a profound manner (now nostalgia)...the nAgAswaram interlude, IMO, is better than the `kaNmaNiyE kAdhal enbadhu' interlude, more melodious and emotional...the whole song is emotional with an indication that there are going to be sad times in future (i.e. there will be a pathos version:-))...

" -preposterous myth that anything melodious is attributed to msv.
i can vouch for raaja's stamp in his favourite sudhadhanyasi

VM's lyrics travel from poetry to pedantry.Sung with grace by SPB and SJ.Excellant prelude and a simple tune.SPB saying "thaali seyya ....CHOLLI irukku" -vattara vazhakku kooda illayE?why?
Pandiyan was discovered by BR in Madurai trafic jam......that should be the fatal accident (for TF)after the trafic jam.Revathi really looked like the "Poovai thangum chinna kaambu".The poster for "MaNvasanai" was one of the highlights (designed by Bharani ? OR Ubald?).One of the memorable posters like ävaL oru thodarkathai.
Revathi will remain BR's only worthy find who adequately had compensated with the likes of dead pans like Sudhakar,Rathi,Vijayan,Radhika,Kannan,Radha,Ravi ..oops forgot KARTHICK!!

OISG, ROTFL :) But you have hurt me by including Radha in the list :). konjam strictness kammi paNNunga. ROTFL again for your comment on the 'fatal find' Pandian. Karthik's squeaky dialogue delivery can turn a sAmiyAr into a serial killer.

OISG, Radha and Radhika(deadpan?!!) out of that list. BR's heroines have been mostly good finds. But he compensated with his heros -from Sudhakar to Raja to Manoj

Pandian did a good job in Man vasanai - he subsequently had an even better role as a Vaathukaaran in another BR movie Nadodi T! fact was BR cast according to requirements of the script that is why we had pandian and Sudhakar struggling elsewhere.
How come you add Vijayan to the list. Vijayan's stand out performance in mahendran's UthiripookaL will always remain as one of the highpoints of tamil cinema.
By the way Revathi was successful but isn't she highly over rated ( she was disappointing in Mouna ragam and depressing in punagai mannan) Why even BR came a cropper when he cast Revathi as Puthumai Penn ( It was as if BR was trying to do a KB - Saritha centric Achamillai Achamillai to spoil a glorious Thanneer Thanneer!) Revathi with her toothy smile would be a perfect choice for Chip and Dale ;-)
Coming to the song I can understand the mentality of the irkedir fan to take offence.
To be compared with MSV is a compliment. But it is not an ideal world and most IR fans would not understand it anyway.
have i stirred a hornet's nest here ?

Sukanya was odd woman out (not christened with 'R')
is also a good actress & a find of BR

Radha can be excluded from the list. She suited for any kind of character. villege girl, rich girl, innocent, etc. even she had acted in madurai meenatchi's character in a movie called "meenatchi thiruvilaiyadal". Bad movie with good songs.
"Pothi vecha malligai" song is a wonderful song.

Do u know that Sukanya has a peculiar acting style of not moving her eyebrows while acting? watch out next time !!
Pandian doesnt move anything in his face for that matter..he he

A jat went on to join NASA.All he got to test were electric Fuses, voltmeters, ammeters etc.Irritated,he approached the chief " Bhaisaab!I am the only Scientist from Jat community but all i get see here is a voltmeter".
The chief answered "Boy!you are a scientist among Jats...agreed...but always remember that you are a Jat among Scientists" - Courtesy Indra Parthasarathy.-Thandira Bhumi.
Revathi is the best actress among BR's finds. But among good actresses .......:)))But when it comes to "over-rating" Radhika wins hands down.
Vijayan can take marginally more credit than me for the success of UthiripookaL....I watched it thrice.
sukanya,Raja,Manoj....See how dreadful it gets, as the list moves on

OSIG - you keep on adding the list.
Sukanya is definitely a w'ful actress. Sowkar janaki had praised her many occasions particularly for the films like aaha, Indian etc.
Being the Grand daughter of T.P.Jayalakshmi and
and S.Balachander she has talent.
Adding her along with Raja & Manoj HUH!!!!!

thala vaazha ilailla nannaa oru kalyaana saapaadu saapta thrupthi indha paatla ennaku kedaikkardhu.
When my sister was a kid during this song's rage, somehow she got hold of a panai olai oodal . She took fancy to the naadhaswaram piece in the first interlude and would torture us to no end , day and night , blowing this part. To give the devil her due , she played this part quite well, much to my chagrin. My dad was her only patron. Probably he could see a budding 'Naamagiripettai' in her . My mom ran out of patience soon . While she was asleep , destroyed her priceless possession and the rudra thaandavam she threw the next day , would now make her go red , who takes pride as a responsible home maker and the mother of a worser brat.

To pay tribute to our beloved G Krishnaveni alias Jikki, who passed away today, can we feature one of her songs, Thulladha manamum Thullum from Kalyana Parisu on SOTD??
Thanks
