Hi! We've made a major addition to newtfmpage, and that is a big song bank. Dhool features thousands of songs for your listening pleasure. This site is a part of the newtfmpage.com - swara.com group. Together with newtfmpage, we wish to make this the best place to listen to tamil film songs online and know about tamil film music. Our collection includes old, new, famous, rare and unheard of songs. We are still fine tuning and fixing the database errors, so please bear with us. We value your feedback, and this will help us build the site better. Please post your comments below or mail to comments@newtfmpage.com.
This work was done by us (bb and RR) with MS and swara.com ravi.

Saravanan! I feel all the songs are worth entering SOTD. It is wonderful to present them also here. Moreover, these kind of songs need to be broadcasted as much as possible even in mp3 format. because such rare treasures are not available even for moeny. I feel that is the best things u can do. Hats off to u.

Hi all, vanakkam. i know thiru.Thayanban for quite sometime now. after Andru peitha mazhayil, he dint get further chance. He keeps doing jingles & music for tv serials, however. His Vellikizhamai Mangalam Pongum for Meera shikakai is a noteworthy jingle. He also worked with MSV as associate music director for sometime and hence is an ardent fan of MSV.

Saravanan:
I have always wondered how, after having gone through several eras of Thamizh film music, I would respond now to an unknown (to me) MSV/KVM composition from the 60s! You have precisely given me that experience. Thanks! Great song! SJ has sung it beautifully!
I have heard of gnaayiRum thingaLum.. but didn't know that it was by Sreedhar and that it had music by MSV. Sreedhar has made no mention of this movie in his 'thirumbip paarkkiREn'. I wonder why! Send me the mp3s of all songs of the movie, if you have them.

Saravanan,
Nice info and a great find. Can you please furnish me with details of such music stores and their locations, when you get time? I would like to make a collection of such rare gems when I return to India. I am asking details because I don't stay in TN and having the exact details can help me plan my trip accordingly.
Thanks in Advance.

Devi Laitha...(sigh)Engirundhalum vaazhga!Cho vin Vandhematharam paarthabothu manadhil varithathu!
The song was a worthy effort by thayanban. Saw his photographs conducting orchestra when Vaiko launched his MDMK.The title music (piano based)of "Dr.Narendranin Vinodha vazhakku"was a memorable one with the titles using the "Dissolve"(Ppt) effect.Sujatha had written very high of his musical talents.VJ excelling as usual and the interludes are pleasant as well.
Poo MagaL meni- SJ gains bonus points every time ....be it Nilayaga vesudhEy or varalaama sugam. It is a pity that only CVS understood her intrinsic worth in 60s.Many of CVS movies of 60s had her songs and this one is again a top bracket song.Soothing Santoor playing the pivotal role and how much of despair and longing get expressed in "vasantha kalam"each time? grand exhibtiton..
Often the singing mood matched öoru sanam from Mellath thirandhadhu kadhavu.
Paneer Poove is another good one....GKV's voice sounding like a combo of ALR/Mothi/Dharapuram Sunderrajan.Apart from the KBS songs which were effortlessly rendered,"Kanagathil"deserves an SOTD for PS's brilliant singing though TMS tries to overdo.(KBS's Sahana piece is outstanding too).KBS in MSV's music and in a social movie by Sridhar must have been a coup had it materialised.

OISG, that is funny. :-)
Saravanan, do you have the gnaayiRum thingaLum LP itself?
I continue to be amazed by Muthuraman, he is so many films.

on: Thu Aug 12 00:38:07 EDT 2004
Sreedhar, I don't have the LP. I got all the songs taped from that shop.
sk, some questions still remain unanswered- why was the film given up after a few days' shooting? why couldn't have Sridhar/ MSV used the songs for some other film?
The film must have had a social subject- can't imagine Sridhar doing a mythological! So, to convince KBS to act in it must have required some effort. (Of course, she did act in uyir mEl aasai later)
gnaayiRum thingaLum...the title itself sounds interesting!
G.Ragavan, sure, I'll try to bring other songs as SOTD too.
Note Man- the shop was near the Bus Stand in Virudhunagar. As far as I can recall, it's name was simply 'Recording Center'. Its been more than 10 years since I went there. But I'm sure if you go the famous eatery called 'Burma Kadai', they would guide you to the shop, for the old man in the shop was their regular customer!
OISG :)) Sorry for the typo!

Song of the Day: kaNNE en azhagu rani radha from pokkisham.
http://www.newtfmpage.com/cgi-bin/stream.pl?url=http://www.dhool.com/sotd/kanenaz.rm
- This is a rare, awesome old song, sung by SPB. Music by Sathyam.
- A thread was started recently about Ilayaraja doing music for a film titled 'Pokkisham'. Reminded me of this film and song. Those who haven't listened to this song before should take the time to hear it out.
- Sathyam was a singer and composer who was prolific in TeluguFM. He didn't do too many movies in thamizh. I am not sure if Pokkisham was a remake or not. There is no other information on the movie in newtfmpage.

Saravanan,
I thought Virudunagar was famous for its 'eNNai parOttA' alone, but it also seems to be a place where you can search for obscure songs :) As an aside, have you tried 'eNNai parOttA' in the 'military' hotels opposite to the Bus stand?

Saravanan & Da Vinci,
Virudhunagar probably started off earlier than many small towns in TN with obsession for `recording centers', IMHO. And most of us know that the concept of `recording centers', `tea stall music' `bus music' etc started off in a big way around the time period of `iLamai oonjalAdukiRadhu'. (While the other two continues till this day, the recording centers mostly died away with the waning of LP records and large availability of `original' cassettes of reasonable quality / CDs etc...one of my distant relatives had a `recording center' in VNR with echo/reverb recording etc that got closed due to waning demand)
VNR will always remain fond in my memory for many reasons, one being TFM, as I could listen to TFM carefree because I was there usually only during summer vacations...
Anyone remember the `minor iLayarAjA maNamigu coffee bAr' in the `bajaar' of Virudhunagar:-) It opened during the `OrambO' days, with big loud speakers attracting everyone...me & my cousin used to joke about the name everytime we walked in that street...

Eden, I didnt see any such coffee bar these days or even during 1990s in VNR.
Da Vinci, VNR food is mostly oily and spicy. Parotta along with those side dishes (called chalna) in the road side shops, especially in the evenings are yummy yummy. When I get back there during vacation, this would be a grand treat! The shop which Sara is mentioning about should be the top seller in parOttA - Burma kadai :).
This time when I was there, I tried to get oldies recorded. But it was pretty hard. There were lots of musicals called Jay, Jam Jam, Sunder, etc (many more) during my school days (1980s). But now they are no more. Seems like they all ran out of business and hence ended up closing the shops! I couldnt spot out the shop which Sara pointed out!

Song of the Day: pothi vacha malligai mottu from maN vaasanai.
http://www.newtfmpage.com/cgi-bin/stream.pl?url=http://www.dhool.com/sotd/pothivacha.rm
- A song that frequently appears in the top 10 Ilayaraja songs and all-time favorite songs lists. Sung by SPB and S.Janaki.
- Vairamuthu apparently mentioned in an interview that IR composed this song after the lyrics was written.
- maN vaasanai was directed by Bharathiraja. It was the first film for Revathi (she won a filmfare award for this film). "Anandhath thEn sindhum poonchOlaiyil" and "arisi kuththum akka magaLE" are other notable songs in this movie.
- Swaram Notes for the song: http://www.newtfmpage.com/notes/ir/pothi_mv.txt
- Chords for the song: http://www.dhool.com/chords/tamil/pothivecha.txt
- Original and Pathos versions: http://newtfmpage.com/forum/2233.01.05.01.html (There is a pathos version of this song sung by SJ).
