i remember the movie, Unnidaththil nAn. It was in the making for a long time. Radio spots of the film was running for more than a year. I think the story was by sujatha (the film was made by - according to Era.Murgan - Dallas Shankar Raman, sujatha's close friend).
It is a story about two young strangers with two different lifestyles, see their life styles swapped as a result of a bet between to elderly gentlemen-friends. One of the friends is thengai srinivasan. Nethaji, ( another film director who made films like, 'unnai vida mAttEn', and 'solvathellam uNmai' and he was also a journalist and known in the tamil sitrithaz [little magazine] circle) from poor background becomes rich and and the affluent and hi funda stock broker ( can you imagine this character before 20 years? ) hero becomes a pauper in a day due to the calculated & crooked steps taken by the two elderly friends. Nalini is the pair for the innocent hero, while, daughter of one of the two friends, Devilalitha courts Nethaji.
It was the first time, in a tamil film, i saw the hero working on a Personal computer. The film opens with a scene where the hero is working on a PC and checking his portfolio.
Devilalitha was popular among the tuesday television dramas. and she was a student of saradha vidyalaya, T.Nagar. She started acting in TV dramas when she was tenth standrad or some thing. She has acted in few other films like Anantha kaNNEr, Dravidan and Nila peNNe. She, known as a homely heroine, or an ice-maiden :-), to my surprise, appeared in a bikini, in one scene in the said film.
It is the only movie where, cricketer kapildev made a special apperance. ( thanks to the nexus. i mean acquaintance, between shankar ramani and kapildev)
Not clear when the film was released. I saw the film in doordarshan.

Sounds pretty much like 'Trading Places' *ing Eddie Murphy and Dan Ackroyd.
Prakash, didn't Sujatha also write the songs for this movie? He may even be the lyricist for this song.

As I read what Prakash had written, young Eddie Murphy was waving his hand. I don't remember movie names all that well.

PS and Sandhya used to adorn the first row during Sundaram Sai bhajans and Iam told she is PS's daughter in law.
unnai thaan - IMO is one of the best Revathi songs in TFM.
Some songs set to Revathi - mandhira punnagai and Maragadha megam sindhum by MSV,
Kanavu onru thonrudhe (Oru odai Nadhiyagiradhu),sangeetha jaathi mullai,
neeyaa azhaithadhu (sounds like Revathi, but some people say it is Kalasaveri) by IR

A class act.
The brief intertwining of guitar and sitar rising above a host of screeching violins is a superb delineation of stringed tonality.
And a lilt that grabs you and never lets go.
Kudos to bb / arun for this moment of discernment.

Song of the Day: poo magaL mEni from gnaayiRum thingaLum.
http://www.newtfmpage.com/cgi-bin/stream.pl?url=http://www.dhool.com/sotd/poomagal.rm
- Saravanan writes:
Sung by S.Janaki. Lyrics by Kannadasan. Music by MSV.
V. Kumar, IR and even GA have often suffered the misfortune of some of their breathtaking albums being wasted on films that never got to be released. MSV, on this count, has been lucky, except, of course, for stray instances in later years like mun oru kaalathilE (remember ‘mangai oru thingaL’?) and plus 2 (recall ‘ninavugaLin oorvalangaL’?), besides a couple of MGR
non-starters.
Of course, in MSV’s halcyon days in the 60s, the number of films that were released was significantly lesser; only established veteran producers were in the fray, and all the projects that were embarked upon were completed and released in due course.
In the light of this, it came as a surprise to me to know of this film from that period ‘gnaayiRum thingaLum’, that was inexplicably abandoned midway.
* * * *
I happened to listen to this song just once many years back on Radio Ceylon’s mandha maarutham. The announcement was just ‘adutha paadal gnaayiRum thingaLum padathilirundhu Janaki paadiyathu’. The song kept lingering in my mind, but I couldn’t glean any further information about the film.
The next I heard this film’s name was when Devika mentioned it in an interview. When asked about the best ever role that came her way, she was unable to choose between nenijil Or aalayam, neela vaanam and maRakka mudiyuma. She then went on to reminisce on gnaayiRum thingaLum. Apparently she had a dream role in the film whose other actors were Sivaji Ganesan, Muthuraman & K.R.Vijaya; and to my joy, she even recalled this song ‘poo magaL mEni’ shot in colour in the beautiful Berijam Lake above Kodaikanal. She added to the surprise by mentioning that the film was a project of director Sridhar.
Years later, in a recording center in Chennai, I met an old-timer, who had come there seeking songs of K.B.Sundarambal. We fell into conversation about the film songs of KBS, and from that gentleman I was startled to learn that Sridhar had roped in KBS to play a pivotal role in gnaayiRum thingaLum. Even more startling was his nonchalant addendum that MSV had recorded 3 songs with KBS for the film, for I had hitherto been under the naďve assumption that MSV was one tfm composer for whom KBS had never sung!
Now I was more eager than ever to lay my hands on this intriguing album. But the hunt, dogged though it was, was leading nowhere. This album seemed to me to be tfm’s best-kept secret!
At long last it was at that blessed Virudhunagar store, that beguiling cornucopia of mythical treasures, that this search too found its elusive goal. That thatha made me speechless with joy by pointing out two records of gnaayiRum thingaLum- one LP and one EP. Both disclosed their year of manufacture as 1965, and the banner of the film was Chitralaya. Thus gnaayiRum thingaLum must have been Sridhar’s first venture with Sivaji under his own banner. And this must have been the first album that MSV worked on for Sridhar after the mellisai mannargaL parted ways, for veNNiRa aadai, also 1965, had music by MSV-TKR.
The LP had 7 songs (Traditional / Kannadasan): ‘vaguthaal vagutha pagai allaar’- a soulful virutham by KBS, ‘pattilum melliya peNNithu’- a great duet by the evergreen TMS/PS duo (incidentally available in musicindiaonline.com), ‘panneer poovE paadhi nilaavE’-a lilting GKV/ LRE duet, the serene ‘seeru thamizh paaluNdu vetRikku vEl koNdu’ that progresses into a stirring ‘Onkaara kudi koNdu aangaram thanai vendRu’ (KBS), ‘kaanagathil neeredukka kaal valikka sendRu vandhEn’- a poignant PS/TMS
duet, ‘ninaivugaLE nillungaL ini neengaL vERu naan vERu’- a reflective TMS solo, and ‘kEtta varam kodukkum keerthi uLLa vEl muruga’- another KBS gem. I realized that I had the last song in a HMV cassette of KBS film hits titled ‘pazham eeyappa’—mysteriously credited therein to kaaraikaal ammaiyaar!
The EP had this lone ‘poo magaL mEni’ on either side ('iru pakka isai' in radio parlance!)
So listen on to this stillborn song; hark at the master music-smith conjuring up vistas of a brook bubbling prettily amidst verdant valleys, whilst SJ happily weaves magic for perhaps the only director who repeatedly celebrated her at a time when she was shunned by most in tfm….
