OISG
thanks for the details about malayamarutham, mohanam and (indeed) rasika ranjani.
i googled "rasika+ranjani" and i got this link.
i dont know what type of site it is who maintains it but just gave it for your information.
I have also read that "neelakuyilae unnOdu naan" of magudi, "edhilu ingu iruppaan" of bharathy are also in rasika ranjani. May be you can confirm the raaga for them also.

OISG,
I laughed so hard at the Abdul Qadir comment. You've always had your zingers, but this was great.

Kupps,OISG: Rangaramanuja Ayyangar (History of South Indian (Carnatic) Music ,1972) lists Rasikaranjani as a derivative of Chakravakam. Ragapravaham by Dandapani and Pattammal also has the same classification.

thanks Kupps,Udhaya,thopps and Raj.
I knew it has to be a Chakravaham-16 derivative.the mention of Mohanam (a HK-28 Janyam) was just to highlight the prominence of the usage "Ga pa dha sa".
Thopps,that carnatic-music.com ( a google search product)was more than useful.Thanks.

More info on the above...something I searched for sometime back and saved the thread from rec.music.classical

Hi Netters,
I need some help from learned folks:
Is the raga called "Rasika ranjani" diffenent from "Purya Kalyani"?
What is the raga with
Aarog: Sa Ri Ga Pa Da Sa
Avarog: Sa da Pa Ga Ri Sa from the mela Gamanasrama ?
I am trying to classify tamil film songs according to ragas. If you have
such interests,
Which of the above ragas is the following songs based on?
1) Neelakuyile Unnodu naan (Magudi)
2) Amude tamizhe azhagiya kodiye ()
Thanks
Subu

Q.1 Rasika Ranjani and Purvi Kalyani.
A small matter of nomenclature. The Gamanasrama janya raga, on which "Meenakshi Memudam Dehi" -- a Muthuswamy Dikshithar kriti is based, is variously known as Puri Kalyani, Purvi Kalyai and Purya Kalyani.
Rasika Ranjani is a janya of Chakravaham.
Rasika Ranjani: s r1 g3 p d2 S; S d2 p g3 r1 s
Purvi Kalyani: s r1 g3 m2 p d2 S; S n3 d2 p m2 g3 r1 s
Purvi Kalyani is an ancient raga and has a number of prayogas that also allow a Nishada in the Arohana. But it certainly cannot be even closely related to Rasika Ranjani since the latter is Madhyama-Nishada varja.
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Q.2 What is the janya raga.
This is a very vexing problem. Given just the Arohana and Avarohana, it is very difficult to classify a raga as being a janya of a particular melakarta. The specified scale could be derived from 4 different melakartas - Chakravaham, Suryakantham, Ramapriya and Gamanasrama.
A very widely applied musicological rule is not to place a raga as a janya of a prati madhyama melakarta unless it has a prati Madhyama swara in its scale. Hence Chakravaham or Suryakantham is a more appropriate janaka mela for this raga.
The following ragas have the required Arohana-Avarohana.
The janaka mela is specified in brackets.
Rasika Ranjani [16]
Varna Rupini [17]
-----------------------------------------------------------------
Q.3 What ragas are these songs in.
If I recognize the songs correctly, both were set to music by Illayaraja. The second song is probably from the film "Koyil Pura". I too was puzzled by the Carnatic basis for these songs. My opinion is that the scale used in these songs is exactly what Subu has been asking about in the above 2 questions.
The touch of Mohanam in the Uttaranga and of Bhauli in the Poorvanga confirms the scale using a Shudha Rishaba and a Chatusruti Dhaivata. "Rasika Ranjani" is probably the raga Illayaraja had in mind while composing the music for these songs.

pKitcha: It is an accepted practice to classify a derivative under the first ( in the serial order 1 thru 72) melakarta it can be associated with. Hence Chakravaham(16) not 17. This ambiguity is due to the deletion of N in the scale. Only N changes between melakarta 16 and 17.

not read the previous postings. But, this song is one special composition in TFM likes of which kept bringing newer ideas, freshness to TFM. Sankar-Ganesh, underestimated and under recognized did some things before IR did such great stuff, like eg: Engey Endhan Kaadhali in Ennakkul Oruvan. IR I think did at the same time as this S_G movies a specatacular song in an odd movie, I will research later.
In those days of this movie, this song was the most popular on any given day competing with the best of IR too, no jokes!!!! Nadiganin Kadhali, what a number.

Raj
the practice of classification under the earliest MeLam is just a thumb rule.It is more to do with the raga lakshnam.(I have read about this and i am trying to get the material again).
this attributing to Janka is just a 2 or 3 century old concept.A guideline if at all there is one could have been established only since VenkataMahi's days.Ragas like Anandha Bhairavi(assigned to 20 Melam),Neelambari(assigned to 29) are much later developments as the ragas had already lived thousands of years in the form of folk.Assgining Melams to Bhashanga & Vakra ragas will always go by the raga lakshnam and many a time the thumb rule might not work.
Same is the case with Desiya ragas like Desh,Dwijavanthi.
Take the case of abheri which has S G2 M1 P N2 S
aarohanam as its aarohanam and Karaharapriya 's avarohanam as its avarohanam. If one were to go by logical extension of thumb rule to aarohanam and avarohanam then the aarohanam falls under 20-Natabhairavi janyam-earlier meLa than Karharapriya(22).Needless to say Abheri has been in tamil folk for ages.

OISG, great points. Interesting to note that Karaharapriya and its janyams have always attracted the south indian composers. Malayalam, Kannada, Telugu numbers....hundreds and thousands of them. Most of Vijaya Bhaskar's scores in Tamil are in Abheri/Karahapriya. KVM,MSV and IR have several numbers again. MSV's Abhogis and its cousin Valajis are too well known for repeated mention here. ARR too has used Madhyamavati quite a bit and Abheri as well. Sudhha Dhanyasi (is it a janya of NB?), kaanada have been generously used as well. Ofcourse, GR has relatively fewer numbers in Abheri but what class.....kaNNan mana nilayai thangamE thangam , vArAi nee vArAi...
The likes of Naushad, Roshan used it in HFM more than others...the perennial 'pyAr kiyA tO darnA kyA, 'mainE shAyad tumhE', 'main tErA chAnd main tEri chAndnI'.....
Natabhairavi and Hanumathodi scales have to be removed totally from existence for nincompoops like Nadeem Shravan, Annu Mallik and SAR to let their fingers feel different notes for a change on their harmoniums.
IR's recent 'iLangAtru veesuthE' is in NB, but never at any moment sounded hackneyed.

Of Vijayabhaskar's scores that SL mentions above, I have struggled to get "Anbu Megamae" out of my head for days together. Wonderful tune, flow and SPB elevates the duet to another level altogether, especially when he sings the penultimate line of the charanam. You can finish the charanam of that song and start off with the pallavi of "AaNenna peNNenna neeyenna naanenna" from Dharmadurai with ease.
Many more such songs from the oldies. Was thinking of MSV/PS' "Pazhamudhir cholaiyile" yesterday
Sriram the original singer of Ilangatru Veesudhe, sang that recently in Jaya TV's ragamaliga programme. He started it off with a mini-alaap and every line had different sangathis and brighas that it sounded like an entirely different song :-) Was interesting to see how the singer's take differs from the more janaranjaga filmi version

OISG: Rangaramanuja Ayyangaar classifies Abheri under Natabhairavi. So do some others!
