I'm a new visitor to this website. I couldn't see anyone discussing about Vani Jayaram's songs.
Let me start this one.(It had been there previously pls. forgive me!)
"Ezhu swarangalukkul ethanai paadal..
Ithaya surangathul ethanai kelvi...
Vaazhum manitharukkul ethanai salanam.."
Wow! Beautiful voice!
VaniJairam.com - A site that has lots of info and songs of VJ.

Neel, thanks a lot. 'megame megame' deserves all those words of praise and more.
I guess the Visu songs have been left out for want of space. Perhaps as you say, they may find mention in the next part.
Don't know why Trichy Loganathan doesn't find place in that list, though.

Neel D -
A praisworthy translation and - well done! I was hoping the piece might include Megame Megame. It must be the "ghum" in the words and singing which makes it the mona lisa of cinematic ghazals. That a gem such as this is part of TFM music history is in itself a matter of nascent pride (for me.) Superbly executed by composer, singer and lyricist. Yaaradhu Sollamal was another such vision. Must be part of the best 10 by SG in every compiled list!

just yesterday I was listening to "iRaivan iraNdu bommaigaL seithAn thAn viLaiyAda" on my latest fancy - internet radio. I was listening to it for the first time, a nice hidden treasure to behold.
good to know that vAmaNan had mentioned it, and thanks to Neel for the translation.

Neel
Thanks for the translations. It was nice to learn a few things which I didn't know earlier. I was listening to Sruthilayalu songs the other day - how well Vani sings! No one would believe that this lady doesn't speak telugu at home. Aalokaye sri balakrishnam is enough to prove the point. Hmm.. I really felt the lack of her voice in movies these days. Sadly, people in the movie industry just don't have any credible taste in music.

Saravanan/Naaz/Sriram/Kaumudi, you are most welcome.
Saravanan,
There are still plenty of VJ songs from the mid 80s to early 90s composed by S-G, aren't they? That probably was too many to squeeze into one issue. What is the song that Trichy Loganathan sang for S-G? It was news to me that CSJ sang for them in 1980.

Neel, the song that TL sang for S-G was 'Om sakthi om sakthi' from Pancha Bootham.
Reg. VJ's songs in the 80s for S-G in the 80s, I had sent a list- don't know how many can find place in Mr.Vamanan's next chapter- Naan unnai nenachen, Seppakkudam thookkippora, Muthurathamo mullai charamo, Paadu thendrale, Pullankuzhal mozhi, enai thedum megam, Ragam thalam pallavi, Mudhal murai thoduvathu sugam, ilankuyilin ilaya ragam, jothiye unnai thediye, Malar manjangal magarandhangal, Oru paadal naan ketten, Odai thaneeril meen aada, Kaaval purindhavan kaathal arindhavan, Yaaro yaaro yaarodu yaaro, Kuthuvilakko ondru, Then paayum velai, Songs from Visu films--
Since he has to write about other singers' songs for S-G as well, he may mention only a few of these songs.

Saravanan,
I have not heard half of the songs you have listed.
Aren't Kulirkaala Megangal (vAnam sevvAnam, ilaigal mIdhum malargal mIdum, mellappEsum vizi) and Amma Pillai (malligai pUkka manmadhan pArkka) by S-G too?

Neel D,
I visited the VaniJairam.com site after a long time..Good work!
I was thinking about a nice duet of VJ with Rajkumar Bharathi. It is from the film "Yuthagaandam" (Rajiv & SriPriya). It goes like this
Kanngal sonnadhu por thodukka
anbu ullam sonnadhu kai kodukka..
Do you have this song?
I believe VJ also has sung 1-2 duets with Raj Seetharaman. Can u get these songs as well? I don't remember the songs though...
Thanks
Priya

Neel, yes, I forgot to add Kulirkaala Megangal in my post. Worse still, I completely missed Amma Pillai in my list sent to Mr.Vamanan :(
S-G must be applauded for giving opportunities to so many old-timers- AM Raja, Jikki, Jamunarani, MS Rajeswari, AL Raghavan, Seergazhi Govindarajan, Soolamangalam Rajalakshmi, PBS ( Besides Kannamma, even in 1979, they gave him a duet- 'maalai mayanginaal iravaagum'- with SPS, Inikkum Ilamai). And they made the sons of TMS & Seergazhi sing in Sashti Viradham.
Priya, I recall one Raj Seetharaman- VJ duet- 'Pala naala aasai vechu kaathirundhen' from Vaanga Mapillai vaanga.

Saravanan: Two VJ songs I listened to recently:
Etthanai Malargal (duet with TMS) in Nadigai Naadagam Paarkkiral; and "Chippiyile Mutthu" from Anbai Tedi. Have they been dicussed earlier?

RR, yes both songs have been discussed earlier :)
Both are very good songs- while Sippiyile muthu is a wonderful situational song, Ethanai malargal is embellished by Jayakanthan's profound lyrics.

Priya, thanks. I don't think I have those songs. But I will search through my tapes.
Saravanan, you are correct, S-G gave songs to all singers in the industry. When they were giving several songs to VJ they also gave many good songs to SJ and PS. I am not sure about LRE. By the way, do you know who the male singer is in "mellappEsum vizi"? Is it Ramesh? I put it under SPB, but I doubt it is him.
- From: Saravanan (@ 213.42.2.21)
on: Thu Feb 12 08:57:40 EST 2004
Neel, the male voice in 'mellappesum vizhi' is SPB :)
And, you remember some time back you asked me the film details of 'Aarambamaagum ananda ragam naam paadalaam mohanam'? It is a Rajkumar Bharathi-VJ duet from Puyal Kadandha Bhoomi- 1984. Music- MSV. (I got it this morning, while thinking of 'Kanngal sonnadhu por thodukka'!)

Any idea who the male singer is in the VJ duet "Pillai manam vellai manam ullathilae un anbu seedhanam". Is it Raj Seetharaman?

NeelD,
Why don't you upload some VJ-S.N.Surendar duets? There is a good one that goes "Kaval purindhavan, kadhal arindhavan yaaradhu manmadhanaa?..."

Hi all!
Here's my next upload:
http://in.f2.pg.briefcase.yahoo.com/bc/sarva1511/vwp2?.tok=bcjfQ.SBmhm8GV.3&.dir=/&.dnm=high.mp3&.src=bc
This song is from L.N.V. Movies' Navarthinam- 1977. From the chronolgy:
High on a hill - Navarathinam
Singers:VJ&M.Balamuralikrishna - Music:Kunnakkudi Vaithyanathan
The song bears the title "English & Carnatic" on the record. The song begins with the lines borrowed from the song "The Lonely Goatherd" from the immortal English Musical "The Sound of Music", written and composed by Richard Rodgers & Oscar Hammerstein II.
VJ starts off with:
High on a hill was a lonely goatherd
Lay ee odl lay ee odl lay hee hoo
Loud was the voice of the lonely goatherd
Lay ee odl lay ee odl-oo
Folks in a town that was quite remote heard
Lay ee odl lay ee odl lay hee hoo
Lusty and clear from the goatherd's throat heard
Lay ee odl lay ee odl-oo
O ho lay dee odl lee o, o ho lay dee odl ay
O ho lay dee odl lee o, lay dee odl lee o la
MBK makes a grand entry singing a swara on the same lines as "High on the hill" and after singing "High on a hill", smoothly switches to "Palukku kanda sa kerunu geru ne".
VJ comes back with the a superb western humming and sings the lines:
Golden youth always rules
dwells in thought
dwells in love
Come on dears, cheers
Here is a beautiful stage
Join in hands with age
Join like our image
MBK repeats these English lines and switches over to Carnatic classical once again, singing:
Yetha unara nilakadaneeku, enchi chooda naga badavu
And therafter sings "Golden youth" and "Yetha unara" alternatively in what is an amazing swift jugalbandhi!
Then comes another surprise and a third dazzling dimension appears. MBK breaks into a soulful Hindustani alaap and goes on to sing the famous "Jo thum thodo piya". The crowning glory is the alternate rendition of "Golden Youth" and "Jo thum".
What a song!! What a charming coalesce of the three styles of music, and how beautifully has KV woven them to create a sensational composition! VJ proves that nothing is beyond her grasp and gives a superb yodelling, with her English being just perfect! And as for MBK, he is the juggler who handles the juglebundhi adroitly making each transition effortlessly and delightfully.
Hope the link works!

Saravanan, thanks for the wonderful song. Another dimension of the versatile VJ and what a great performance by BMK.
Priya, I think I have one other VJ-SNS duet. I will upload it soon.

Saravanan -
I depend on you (that's a good thing:-)) to search out these rarities and share them with us. It is a unique song, and I am glad to have discovered it. I was under the impression that VJ-BMK had only a couple of duets to their credit - Thangam Vairam Navamanigal, and Sandhanak Kudam Ondru Sadhiradudhu - but this Sound of Music Gone East is absolutely out of the blue. Thanks!
When is the Chronology going to make a comeback?
