There has always been a complaint in TFM DF that IR fans manipulate ratings etc.
Please visit the latest opinion poll conducted by Kumudam. IR wins by huge majority. If you find time, please read through the various opinions from all over the world. It is really amazing to find that we are not alone in praising IR - The Genius

how many national awards did IR win?
i am not here to degrade raja he is a class of his own but ARR is leaps and bounds ahead of raja.
4 national awards, innumerable chart toppers!
He has shown he can compose pure carnatic numbers like enge enathu kavithai, kannodu kanbethelam.
Folk music like Kadu potta kadu
Sweet melodies like vennilave, snehithane, minnale from may matham.
IR opted for the quantity while ARR opted for quantity thats why ARR is where he is today.
IF you listen to IR's songs you can find the tabla playing in almost every song of his, while ARR's songs have varied instruments.
IR copies his own songs thats not the case ARR.

sorry for typo error its quality in arr's case.
IR's latest hit ilangatru resembles malikoivl vaslil from veera
songs like enoda rasi nalla rasi
engita mothathey na rasathi rasan ada
mama un ponna koda are few examples how raja rehashes his own tune.
i began to notice about all this ever since private FM channels came to chennai.

jacky,
ARR got more national awards bcause he is scoring equal number of albums in hindi (90% of arrs song released in tamil and hindi if not released yet in tamil will be released in future). all his songs got some copy of his past songs.. but thats not wrong.. but he is also awarded as king of copycat (not his own music).
ir did not do much hindi movies... still he got national awards.. they prefer to give national awards only to hfm mds.

further more enge enathu kavithai, kannodu kanbethelam are not pure carnatic songs. pure ir can do pure carnatic songs.. he has proven that in past. sindu bairavi, salangai oli, ivan and in lot more.. all of them are super hits. some movie names i cannot remember but i remember the songs.. poovil vanthu mothum kangal a beautiful song. in that movie there are some pure carnatic songs too. anyone remember the pure carnatic movie names??

rahman did more than what raja did. dont say rahman rehashes tunes of all the artists. he has his style and more rhythmetic and along with more expressive. rahman was awarded by the quality of music and creativeness. not just to award any one and the awarding comittie are not stupids.

I don't think their music compositions can be compared, because they belong to different genres. They are complex in their own ways. Ilayaraja has the talent to create excellent tunes from natural instruments like the violin, guitar.. etc. On the other hand, AR Rahman
is an excellent sound engineer. He composes tunes through the computer with synthesized music, which appeals to the new generation. However, Ilayarja soft music suited the older generation. I like them both. They both have created great tunes that make us stand in awe. Don't compare to geniuses. Let them be. Just appreciate the music.

Ilayarajas inspired/ copied songs
01
Kanavu kaanum [Film: Neengal Kettavai]
Ditto replica of the song 'kasme vaade' from the movie Upkaar. Music by Kalyanji Anandji!
Listen to Kanavu kaanum | Kasme vaadee
02
Theme from Mouna Raagam [Film: Mouna Raagam]
Inspired from the theme of the film Flash Dance by Giorgio Moroder.
Listen to Mouna Raagam BGM | Flash Dance
[i2fs] comments: Inspired! No direct lift but a very beautiful adaptation of the Flash Dance theme. 'Adaptation' would be the best word to describe this. But you sure can find out traces which confirms IR listening to the Flash Dance theme for inspiration.
03
Chittu kuruvi [Film: Chinna Veedu]
Inspired from Antonin Dvorak's Symphony 9 - New World. The actual track is Sym No. 9 in e, Op. 95: Scherzo: Molto Vivace.
Listen to Chittu kuruvi | Antonin Dvorak's Symphony 9 (The beginning of the Tamil song can be distinctly heard in this clip. Make sure you have your speaker volumes in max, it starts with a very low volume)
04
Kan malargalin [Film: Thaippongal]
Inspired from ABBA's Money money money
[i2fs] comments: Just the beginning of the song.
05
Darling darling darling [Film: Priya]
Inspired from Boney M's number, Sunny
[i2fs] comments: Again, just the beginning.
06
Entha poovilum vaasam [Film: Murattukkaalai]
Inspired from Antonio Ruiz-Pipo's 'Cancione et Danza: 2. Danza'.
Listen to Entha poovilum vaasam undu | Cancion et Danza: 2. Danza
[i2fs] comments: The opening portion is surely inspired.
07
Ada veetukku veetukku [Film: Kizhakku Vaasal]
Inspired from Mozart's 25th symphony, 1st movement.
[i2fs] comments: Good case of inspiration.
08
Poottukkal pottaalum [Film: Chatriyan]
Inspired from the song 'My favorite things' from the all time classic Sound of Music!
09
Theeyani [Film: Nireekshana]
Inspired by The Sound of Music number 'My favorite things'!
Listen to Theeyani | My favorite things
[i2fs] comments: Inspired!
10
Chittukku chella chittukku [Film: Nallavanukku Nallavan]
Possibly inspired by Rimsky-Korsakov's 'The Tale Of The Kalendar Prince', from his 1888 work by name 'Scheherazade'.
Listen to Chittukku chella chittukku | Tale of Kalendar Prince
[i2fs] comments: Given Ilayaraja's love for Western Classical music, it sounds plausible...also taking into account his past inspirations from the likes of Antonin Dvorak! Nikolai Andreevich Rimsky-Korsakov is one of the leading 19th century Russian nationalist composers. 'Scheherazade' was written almost towards the end of Rimsky's career and life...as he put it himself in his memoirs, it "closes a period of my work, at the end of which my orchestration had attained a considerable degree of virtuosity and warm sonority"
11
Kaadhal Vandhiruchu [Film: Kalyanaraman (1979)]
A prominent portion partly inspired by the song 'Lady in Black' by the rock band Uriah Heep!
Listen to Kaadhal Vandhiruchu | Lady in Black
[i2fs] comments: Lady in Black was part of Uriah Heep's 1970 album, 'Salisbury'.

Guys,
This place is getting heated up. lets cool it off :)
as i said in my first post they are each a class of their own.
Besides i just wanna add a point Raja has also bluntly copied songs
katuren katuren from honest raj is a song from dangerous
thanni konjam from july ganapathy is adapted from sandirare soriyare - amaran
raja o raja viduthalai - laila o la - a rd burman song
100 varusham from panakaran is lifted from lawaris mere ange ne me
it's not that Raja never copies, all music directors lift tunes from the west or hindi films.
It has become a part and parcel of their career, besides imitation is the best form of flattery!
Then why single out rahman if he used comerically available loops?
nobodys perfect.

raj..
u were sayign pure carnatic..and mentioning Ivan..
is the "thulu thulu thulu molaga thulu" such a carnatic compared to Kannode kanbethellam?

and dear raj
"IR did not do much hindi movies... still he got national awards.. they prefer to give national awards only to hfm mds."
well out of 800 movies in tamil he got 3 NA...
and for ARR ..out of may be 100 movies...he got 3 as well...
so the success rate would be
IR = 3/800 * 100 = 0.375 %
ARR = 3/100 * 100 = 3%...
so the difference between IR and ARR would be 2.625%!!!!....
well any comments?...

i know u were replying to some crappy statement, but u sounded serious and appeared to have a message for all...
ARR got 3 national award for Tamil films...ithukku yaen Hindi ellam izhuthuttu vareenga!!
btw lemme not disrupt a nice chain....
well said ambleen! :-)

i still remember an interview in DD by Raja in 93/94 where he said people have lost their taste for good music.
When MSV was there tamil movie songs used to be higly carnatic based, when raja came he kinda gaved mixed songs, songs like aasai kathulu thothu vittu and en iniya pon nilave had touches of western influence.
Did MSV say people lost their sense for good music, he never.
The same thing happened when Rahman came in 92, its a transition.
When rahman was giving hits one over other Raja had his setbacks, i personally had a belief that Raja would come back strongly but its turned out to be a dissapointment.
His music in Siraichalai was a total let down.
How many hits did he churn out in the last few years?
probably a few songs in hey ram.
kadalukku mariyathai
one song in alagi - oliyele
u really need to think hard and scrath to remember his hits these days.
Raja definetly lost his midas touch!
